Zhukov's war
RE: Zhukov's war
1942. 06. 07.
Our trap misfired bigtime. We supported our tank armies with relatively low strength armies to make it tempting for the panzers. In the hq of them we had a lot of high readiness armor with good commander and high OP.
The panzers did what we expected. But there was no reinforcement when we needed it. A tank army was destroyed, not the panzers trapped... We are having good luck:(
In the south 1 attack suceeded. We destroyed the extremely weak panzer korps behind us in the centre, and after that we pulled back.

I have been expecting the Soviets to use the reinforcement tactic. My blitz attacks have been only attacking well disruppeted forces on a small scale to ensure we have a good chance to dislodge the defenders even if they get reinforced. This has limmitted the scale and the number of fronts we can attack in. Strong troops have followed the leading Pz korps to force a battle if a attempt was made to encircle of our forces.
Last week must of been our week then.... we made a couple plotting mistakes and no reinforcments hindered our encirclment.
1 attack near Lvov that retreated the enemy.
AGC reinforced its flanks as massed Soviet Tank armies have been spotted there. We advanced East of Minsk

Zhukov sent out 3 tank armies to cut the railway above Minsk. They stumbled into an unseen panzer korps, but defeated it easily. Learning from past catastrophes they retreated back where they came form at the end of the week. Our southern attack was a bloody failure this time.

The abality of the Soviets to attack our Minsk supply lines will limmit and put in great danger any offence east of Minsk. A battle to destroy the tank armies NW of Minsk would leave little troops to advance further to the east.
The VVS has returned with single fighter wings and have proved to be effective.
AGS has attacked the Soviet advancing towards Lvov retreating 2 korps.

No action. We prepare for the german panzers. Our southerm armies flank from the north is open to the panzer hordes around Minsk. We have nearly nothing to stop them.

The Luftwaffe bombs away at our troops, paying the small price for it to our fighter defence. But on the ground there is no action. Germans mostly bombed our armor concentration above Minsk, but they sent unescorted bombers against 2 shock armies in the south in vital defensive positions while 40 soviet fighters were still in the air. We believe this missions were for recon, and this means german panzers are transfered for a frontal assault against our southern forces. From the central reserves 3 more tank armies were sent to the area. They might be late getting there saving our infantry, but they will be in time for revenge.
An advancing infantry korps near Odessa was forced to retreat.

A great gamble has been taken this turn....
In the South, Panzers have launched a assult North of Chisinau encircling 1 Soviet INF korps but a failed attack has left its flanks exposed. This assult has cut a major supply line to the bulk of the Soviet army.
AGC centre has launched a attack with the objective to cut off the remaining supply line. 1 attack failed but the other Pz korps captured Zhitomin and advanced further south.
If we knew these supply could be cut, a more aggressive turn would of been played. We now await the Soviet responce nervously.

The german olimpic long runner squad doomed our southern troops. We made a mistake of not covering our depth at one place. We were unlucky as the germans spotted the only place to attack and sent those runners through the opening (infantry divisons just run a few hundred miles in a week, from the Minsk area to past Zhitomir). Near Odessa a strong panzer korps cut the other rail line. It was supported from behind a river, with no supplied tank army in range so we did noth bother with it. We forced to surrender the 2 weak panzer korps coming from the north. With low readiness our southern troops will get destroyed next week.

East of Zhitomin (about 5 hexes away)
I had to think long and heard about my deployment last turn. If i deployed to close to the front and my supply attacks failed, I would have suffered massive losses from counter attacks. If I deployed to far back, I would miss a great chance to destroy a very large part of the cut off enemy. I chose the 2nd option for a number of reasons and only managed to destroy 2 Soviet korps this week.
The VVS has returned back with force but the Luftwaffle is in no shape to engage the enemy. Fresh airwings have been brought up to the front and will deal with this threat.
Losses for the Panzers are mounting and replacements are far and few between. The Soviets seem to always manage to bring stronger and stronger korps to the front. It feels like Germany has not made a dint to the Soviet OOB.

Soviet troops continued to flee in disorganized panic in the south. 4000 now obsolete fighters were sent in to defend them. If the Luftwaffe wipes them out is good for us (they damage the germans before upgraded), if not that is good as well (our troops have more chances of survival).
No losses.

Edited because the method I described doesn't seem to work.
Maybe one of the computer whizbangs on this forum will help us out here.

Thx. I think I'm doing something wrong. I could not do a screenshot from a newer game either (space empires V). I will try tomorrow, but somehow I feel I make a very basic mistake and not the dosbox is needed.

The destruction of the VVS was our objective this week but we only had the strength to attak 1 of the 2 airfields. We lost around 1500 AC and destroyed 2500 Soviet AC. Our bomber losser were alot higher then we were willing to pay.
The ground assult in the South has been called off with air recon showing very large number of Soviet armor in our path.
The chance to destroy a very large number of Soviet formations has now gone.
Too few Pz divisions were committed to the Southern battles. 3 pz divisions attacked from RUM, 6 Pz divisions attacked from Lvov area. The disruption of the Soviet supplies surprised us as much as it the Soviets. We were unprepaired to take advantage of such a great advantage and attempts to reinforce the front with more Pz divisions was too late to make a impact in the battle. The Soviets now have a stable front and are able to launch counter attacks if they wish.
The Luftwaffle was not ready for such a great VVS committment but it should of been expected. We still have not replaced our losses for the last great air battle we have had with the VVS. Our losses are not being replaced and the Pz divisions are effected the most. 1400+ point Pz division are now only 700+ point Pz divisions. We have strengthed our Pz Korps to counter there low strength.
Our goals are now to get the Luftwaffle up to strength to destroy the remainder of the VVS and prepair to welcome the La's into battle
Mass produce our new heavy tank the tiger. This should give us a chance to destroy the Kv's that have slaughted our light armor.
Plan quick strike blitzs to keep the Soviets on there toes.
Prepair kill zones to destroy any attacks in preslected areas
