Strategic Analysis ~ Part 1

Operation Monsoon - (Establishment of Air Supremacy in China - Burma - India theater)

Objectives:

1) Elimination of enemy offensive capabilities from forward bases

Assessment: Forward bomber bases were destroyed on the first day of the campaign
and the remaining enemy forces were immediately withdrawn. The remainder
of enemy actions were relegated to harrassment raids on rear areas that were
dispatched by point-defence interceptors of the RAF.

2) Attrition of enemy air forces with emphasis on machines and pilots

Assessment: The ratio of exchange between fighters was approximatey 2-1 in favour of the allied forces. Two airgroups have been diverted to the Defence of China and enemy ground-attack sorties have been intercepted with some degree of success. Though the majority of losses inflicted upon the enemy fighter force are obsolescent designs, the loss of adequate pilots may become a decisive factor in the next phase of operations.

3) reduction of strategic assets including industrial centres and raw material facilities

Assessment: Subsequent to the reduction of enemy figher capabilities, the 1st USAAF strategic air wing was deployed against industrial targets in southern burma and french indo-china. Results have been adequate thus far and operations may be expedited with greater force once long-range interceptors are made available.

Strategic Analysis ~ Part 2

Operation Gatekeeper - (Defence of Port Moresby)

1) Delay of Port Moresby Invasion

Assessment: It is estimated that the invasion of Port Moresby was delayed by 15-30 days. Strikes against enemy port facilities were sufficient in distrupting the cohesion of the enemy amphibious shipping force.

2) Attrition on enemy aerial assets

Assessment: Despite extremely limited aircraft numbers and limited airbase capacity (in reality, the theoretical ratio of force was approximately 1-8 against the allied favour), airbase operations were retained for the sporadic phases of combat that were necessitated by the primary campaign objective. Enemy fighter losses were estimated in the hundreds and bomber lossess were equally high.

3) Diversion of fleet assets from other theaters

Assessment: The main success of Operation Gatekeeper was the diversion of capital fleet assets away from the central pacific front. It is estimated that two large carriers and four smaller carriers were dispatched as a means of interdiction to the resupply convoys bound for port moresby. These were engaged with varying degrees of success, and despite the loss of four light cruisers and several cargo vessels , at least one of these carriers was damaged (and more importantly made unavailable for the Midway battle).

Strategic Analysis ~ Fleet Dispositions

Allied Carriers Sunk = 0
Enemy Carriers Sunk = 3

Allied Battleships Sunk = 0
Enemy Battleships Sunk = 1

The battle of Midway was the effective use of task force twenty-four against approximately 40% of the enemy carrier fleet. The majority of enemy assets
were disposed of (a single enemy carrier escaping during the battle) and no significant damage was sustained.

A number of offensive operations have been prepared, however these may not be
carried out with any form of expediency. At best a state of parity has been achieved with the enemy fleet. Furthermore the number of land units necessary for a sustained offensive campaign are unavailable. The island of Midway is still occupied with several thousand enemy troops and the majority of available units have been sent to midway as
a protective force. It is expected that attempts shall be made either for an evacuation or
a resupply of Midway, therefore numerous air assets have been deployed to midway such that any hostile movements can be defeated.

It is expected that another attritional battle shall be necessary in order such that the intitative can be retained.
