Public Beta v1.08.08 now available

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Maybe it was dicussed before, but I didn't find any reference: Regarding finding the right balance I would like to ask the forum how often should Germany be able to win in a matched game between equal skilled opponents in your personal opinion?

5-7,5%?
or higher?

Let's stay quite generous with victory conditions (loosing 260 points would not necessarily mean the end of the USSR, it would certainly spoil your career as CiC).

Some people still play PBEM using 1.07. I think it's possible to continue game using older version if both parties agree. And you can always make a copy of game folder with specific version to retain it for some games you don't want "disturbed", while exploring new version's features using main copy. So it's a win-win situation.

Yeah, never chance a running system. :-))
Absolutely no critism of your hard and superb work, @morvael, Denniss and team, it's only because ... hm, we are all humans. :-)

And people have different views of an interesting game design.
For me that's mostly fine and acceptable, in the end it's all about having fun. The more happy customers the better, as only a big community enables the recources for developing further improvements (as a neverending story).
No matter what the dev's claim, it will be allways be an abstraction instead of a simulation (most numbers are chrome), the real problem is to include diehard powergamers as well as casual campers.
Therefore much thanks again for your efforts and I might add I would really like to see much more, maybe not only in patching.

Exactly, this varies from player to player.

edit: IMHO, if someone desires higher early win % than default he should play with difficulty settings favoring Axis. Of course default setting matters a lot, because players are more willing to accept it.

If someone has all the previous patches (pompack?), and can somehow share them with me (maybe via Dropbox), I could put them on my Dropbox, as I have 1TB of space there. We would then make a sticky post of links to all versions and people could then install any patch they like and play using that version.

Morvael,
I think (though I will need to check) that I have every patch from Vanilla to 1.08.08, however I don't use dropbox so would there be another way that I could get them to you, if you still want / require them?

It will be a lot of GB so unless you want to send me a DVD with the patches, you'll have to upload them somewhere, so I could download them to my computer. Dropbox is quite reliable and unless you have limits on your internet connection you could left it running for days and it would upload the files eventually.

I will take a look at dropbox & see how easy it is to use (as I am a bit of a Luddite) otherwise I could send you a USB stick with the required files if that would be acceptable

When you install Dropbox it creates a folder on your computer. Files that you copy there will eventually end up on Dropbox servers. If you put them in a subfolder of Dropbox folder you could then share this folder with me (my email is Dropbox user indentifier). That would result in the same folder appearing in my Dropbox folder with all the files (a mirror). Don't know easier method of transfer. USB is OK, though this involves money and risk of losing the stick in transfer.

OK I will look at it tonight. The free version has a limit of 2GB which I don't think will be enough to do all the files in one go & I am loath to purchase something that I will probably never use again.

We can transfer those files in steps. PM me your email (that you will use for Dropbox registration) so I will prepare a shared folder. All you will have to do then is to copy files into it, as it appears on your disk.

OK I will send you a PM when I have uploaded the files, where do you want me to start, 1.08.08 backwards or from Vanilla to 1.08.08?
It might not be until tomorrow as I need to complete a WitE turn tonight & it depends on when I finish that and if I have time to do it tonight.

Yeah, I guess selection from all versions of 1.07 and 1.08 will be enough for most players. They can always ask about specific version later.

edit: just make sure you have unlimited (not in speed but in amount) data transfer, so that you won't exhaust your internet supply or (even worse) have to pay extra.

I think there is no need to host patches from before the last expansion. I think it was 1.07.08.

Hi
IMHO, WeTransfer is probably the fastest, easiest way to transfer large files, and it does not require any instalation.

After transfer I plan to host them on Dropbox, so this will save me a lot of work. Not sure if WeTransfer can be used for permanent hosting.

Hi again

No, WeTransfer just provides a temporary link. It is just a very easy and convenient (and fast) way to transfer large files (up to 2 Gig) in a peer-to-peer basis.

"45. No side will call reserve units to join combat if the expected final odds are outside 1:5 to 5:1 range."

Does this mean that if the expected final combat odds before reserve activation are going to be outside that range, no call? Or does it instead mean that
if the expected final combat odds, including the reserve activation that's up in the air, are still outside that range, no call?

If the answer is the latter, what about a situation in which several units might activate? Will each of them decline because the odds would be bad
if none of the others activated?

Suppose the odds are going to be 6-1 assuming no activations. A defender activates, and now the odds look like they'll be 2-1.
The attacker had reserves but it didn't look like they were going to be needed because of 6-1. But now they will be needed. Can the
attacker reserves activate in light of the new odds now that defender has escalated?
you cannot refine it

When re viewing the screen of the losses it is set to zero! This happened when playing on older patches, and 1.08.08.
