DXWnd made easy (updated September 2025)

Eagle Day to Bombing of the Reich is a improved and enhanced edition of Talonsoft's older Battle of Britain and Bombing the Reich. This updated version represents the best simulation of the air war over Britain and the strategic bombing campaign over Europe that has ever been made.

Do you know how I can have the game remember the change of options between runs, using DXWnd?

Each time I launch it, I must set all the in-game options again...

Thanks!
Yes, unlike Reshade which does injection, you create a profile in DXWND for your application. As long as DXWND is running or you you launch the game EXE via its UI, it will apply the adjustments to your game at launch.

Also, after you have started a scenario you can "lock current preferences" by selecting that at the bottom of the in-game options menu.

Started using this program, performance improvements are excellent with one exception, whenever I hit a button in scenario the game gets this weird artifacting for between 1 to 45 seconds, screenshot below. Any ideas how to fix.?

If you can get to the options menu, what happens when you toggle the "direct draw software emulation" button?

Toggle the option on, then restart the game as instructed. On relaunch the option is unchecked in the settings no change in artifatcing issue.

if you are using the v2_05_50_build version of DXWnd and following all of the instructions in the thread then I'm out of suggestions. Hopefully someone else can help.

I am getting the same problem. Very annoying, effectively a broken game.

If you can't get it to work through dxwnd you can start it up normally and toggle on "windowed" mode in the options and play it that way.

Instead of just declaring it broken, some additional information would be helpful. The OP has not responded to my latest query so maybe you will?

To verify, I did things exactly by the book now I downloaded the vintage v2_05_50_build version of DXWnd (previously tried with 2_06_10), game is already set to NOT use windowded mode, ran DXWnd as administrator, imported the EDBTR that is present in the game files after latest stable patch, options, expert mode, clear compatibility flags, highlighted the icon in DXWnd and actually now the game tells me that "error, can't set screen mode" and will not launch.

Previously game would launch but with the graphical glitch the last user had.

EDIT: Okay so something interesting happened. I used the plain DWnd and did NOT put any icons in there, not even the EDBTR and just ran BTR and ... it runs, albeit in a small window, but without the graphical glitch and of course at better speed than not using DXWnd. Freezes and dies the moment I tab out though. And it is a small window, effectively original resolution size. If this could be fixed, all would be good. When I try to run BTR by putting the .exe icon into the DWnd, it starts but likewise in a small window and with (far worse) broken graphics.

Second Edit: when I use the newer DXWnd version, I get a compatibility flag while following the original post's method to the letter. The game will simply not launch or do anything.

There are some good tips on this page: https://forums.matrixgames.com/viewtopi ... 5&start=40
other suggestions:

Run dxwnd and just highlight the icon, then start the game from the normal game menu, or find btr.exe on your hard drive and run as administrator.

Make sure the path to the btr.exe is correct in dxwnd.

sorry for all the hoops to make this work. Some have great success, some don't for some reason.
