RE: OT - WWII quiz
Q2: The "Congressional Medal of Honor" is a well known award. Are the following claims true or false?
a) WW2 saw the highest number of MoH's awarded if any armed conflict?
b) No persons were awarded the medal twice during WW2?
As the Americans handed these out with the rations in WW2, (In 3 Div you'd be stiff to miss out) does it mean as much as say the V.C?

Given that fewer than 500 were awarded in both theaters of the war, I dispute the characterization that they were handed out with the rations.

Q2. I expect that the American Civil War saw more CMoH (assuming it existed then).ORIGINAL: terje439
Ok, google-mode set to off then [:D]
Q1: The British submarine commander Jimmy Launders achieved two milestones in submarine warfare. What two feats did he and his crew accomplish? (The two are quite similar with a small but significant difference.)

Q3: The Doolittle raid was launched from which carrier?
Q4: The German counterattack in the Ardennes in the period Dec 1944 to Jan 1945 is often referred to as "Battle of the Bulge" in english, but what was its German codename?
Q5:Sepp Dietrich, the German commander, was not really named "Sepp", what was his real name?
I am not sure if more were given out in the Civil War, but that war was the first one in which the medal existed. I remember a few years ago seeing a list of CMoHs from the Civil War that were revoked. Would that impact the answer?

(And I agree with you, the "rations" comment was not nice.)

RE: OT - WWII quiz
Maybe we'll get the one handed out to MacArthur revoked?
In a number of cases, the MoH was handed out for instances well below the criteria expected, it was used as a morale builder and political tool.
The 3rd US Infantry Division managed to receive more MoH than the entire USMC (6 Divisions)

I'm gonna sum it up as so many have responded since I placed these Qs;
Kaletsch is very close on Q1, they were indeed the first submarine crew to sink a surfaced submarine by torpedo, the other one is not correct. But part two is very close to this answer [;)]
Q2 - The highest ammount of MoH's handed out in an armed conflict was during the "ACW", and noone recieved the MoH twice during WWII.
Q3 - Hornet is correct
Q4 - Wacht am Rhein is also correct
Q5 - still stands

Indian Wars 426 The french indian wars? More like 1860-1898s running around "moving" indians into reservations etc...
I say from 1860s since the medal isnt instituted until then, so any part of the indian wars before naturally couldnt bestow any MoH.

Here are the numbers for the number of recipients of the Victoria Cross in WW2"
Australian 18.5 (one claimed Irish/Australian) 10% (percentages are rounded)
Canadian 13 7%
Scottish 15 8%
Irish 4.5 (one claimed Irish/Australian) 2%
Other 131 71%
Total 181
The 3rd Infantry Division received fewer than 8% of the Congressional Medal of Honor’s for WW2.
Q: What self recognized war criminal received the Philippines highest award for WW2? (McArthur was refused this award because he left the Philippines).

Nope [:)]
Lets sum up Q1,
Part 1: The British crew torpedoed and sank a surfaced submarine. The first crew to achieve this.
Part 2: somewhat similar to Part 1, with one major difference.
Now, read carefully at Part 1, and Part 2 should reveal itself [;)]

Ehh, it was specific to that post. Where it seems to me that the poster was unaware of some particular wars/events. Why wouldnt u wiki that. Has nothing to do with finding answers to the quiz.
My post about MoH by conflicts was a part of the debate after the quiz was answered.
Why wouldnt u google that. That said i knew the approx figurs from the official MoH page i once looked at. I googled the numbers for ease, but again long after the quiz was answered. I cant see why u wouldnt do that.
