I've meant to ask. Are the new standard maps released in v2.06 the same as the previous custom maps with grid lines, last updated in July? I like the new maps which seem better, but I miss the grids. If the new maps are improved, will you be updating the replacement maps with the grid lines? Thanks!

They are pretty much the same. When 2.06 was released, I've also updated all earlier (Summer, Inverted Summer, Winter) maps to reflect the changes. IIRC, four of the game's maps had a few small elevation changes to the terrain, and there are few subtle changes to shading and stream smoothing.
The updated Summer / Inverted Summer / Winter maps are available from the OTS web site, community add-ons here: http://www.ontargetsimulations.com/?page_id=262

FYI, I am seeing differences. For example, the newer CA1 map in the release (on left) has more earth tones and looks nicer than the custom map (on right) with greener tones and the grid lines. I just downloaded the newer custom maps (dated November?) from the OTS site. These are the same green tone maps you had before and that are still on your link.

So, if it's not too much to ask, could we please get another set of your new earth tone maps with the grid lines? That would be awesome. Thanks!

+1. I've been converted over to using grid lines now too.[:D]

Not trying to start a flame war, but why place grids on a hex game? The movement of the unit counters are still by hex and how would you read the grid lines? I've never seem grid numbers like those on the map.

No flames here.[:)]The grids are 1km squares, like most large scale maps are, so it makes them feel a bit more like real maps. A lot of players don't like the hexes as they remind you you're in a game and break the immersion.

It's probably a matter of taste. Some of us have years of experience playing board games and other hex based (computer) war games, whereas others have a background in playing "simulators" (Steel Beasts Pro, Arma series, ...) and grid based computer war games (Combat Mission, Command Ops, Achtung Panzer/Graviteam Tactics, Wargame:*, and Flashpoint:Germany).
Personally, I'm better at estimating distances on a grid based map than on a hex based map.

@pzgndr: I'll see what I can do. The green November set you downloaded are the latest, and contain the same info as the earth tone set part of 2.06. Apparently, the grid + earth tone work best for you.

I've just uploaded the 2.06 (earth tone) maps with grid lines to the OTS website: http://www.ontargetsimulations.com/?page_id=262

William,

Could you please go into more detail about how you created these maps using QGis? I am looking to create some of my own and any help/tutorial would be greatly appreciated.

Another big thank you for these, William!! I just noticed you had done grid (not hex) FCRS (new stock, as it were) versions and they are fantastic. The game looks spot on using those - you have a great combination of the Plodder's relief shading which makes the terrain really clear, and no awful hexes to spoil the immersion. They're fantastic and these should be the default game map style, imvho. (Or at least there should be a simple in-game switch to get rid of the hexes). Many thanks again.

I've been looking for a place to get printable maps for Red Storm. This is the most recent post that I've found but the links are dead. Can anyone tell me whereto find them?
