September 5, 1942

In the frigid waters of the Kurile Islands in the north Pacific, a large battle had taken place.

It was expected by the Allied Naval command that reprisals for the landings in the North Pacific would be swift and vicious. After several days of aerial attacks from Sakhalin and Hokkaido, the beaches of Paramushiro Jima were to be assailed by the combined mass of the Imperial Navy's Battleline.

Having been assembled in Tokyo a full week before, the Battleship Yamato was joined with all but the entire Imperial Fleet Heavy Unit divisions. These included the battleships Ise and Hyuga, Fuso and Yamashiro, Kongo and Kirishima, and the larger Nagato and Mutsu. In addition the Cruiser Nachi and fifteen destroyers were compiled to assist.

It was conceived that such a mass of sea power covered by fighters from adjacent airbases, combined with the prevalent weather storms, would be impervious to aerial attacks for all but the last approach to Paramushiro Jima. This would be of little consequence as the attack would be carried out at night, and a withdrawl would be made before sunrise.

The task force was detected by allied patrols while still south of Sakhalin and plans were made for the withdrawl of all cargo vessels in the vicinity. Unfortunately, not all vital supplies had been disembarked and it was therefore conceived that the main allied cruiser force would be detached and established as a blocking force for the harbor on the eastern half of the island. In support were sixteen antiquated destroyers utilized for convoy escort duties and twenty-four torpedo boats.

The battle was joined at 0600 Hours standard Oahu Time ~





Perlman's Cruiser force was ordered to block the soutern approach to the Anchorage, and opposing ships were engaged at a range of 8,000.

Immediately all Destroyers were ordered to fire torpedoes while the cruisers were to attract enemy fire, their guns having little chance of penetration against the heavy armour of Yamato.

Within thirty minutes, a series of explosions were seen aboard Hyuga, which had been struck with two Mark 15 torpedoes. The shellfire continued unabated, and a single 18.1' shell has struck the cruiser Minneapolis, penetrating through the belt amour, past the engine room, and out of the other side. After a loss of electrial power, the Minneapolis was halted. Damage control parties were quick to act and engine room fires were put under control. This respite was short-lived as the cruiser was now under attack from the Battleship Kongo, which had been separated from the main force and an attempt was made for a trafalgar-esque flanking maneouvre against the allied cruisers. The Minneapolis was met with a barrage of 14" and 6.1" armour piercing and high explosive shells. The order was given to abandon ship.

As covering fire for the evacuation, the Cruisers Helena and St. Louis were ordered forward against the enemy destroyer screen. Of the many 6' shells fired against the enemy battleline, only a few found their marks against the destroyer Ariake, showing once again the lack of allied experience in night combat.

Despire the impending doom of Hyuga, an aggressive thrust was ordered by Admiral Tanaka, maneouvering to the left in attempt to crush the allied fleet against the southern isthmus of Paramushiro Jima.

The allied force was pressed once more



The imperial force had been lured south as planned, and now the trap was sprung.
Four separate destroyer squadrons comprising sixteen destroyers total were unleashed against the flanks of the enemy battle line. Having maneouvered from the north, around Chishima fortress and from the southern islands, their presence was not detected until a series of torpedoes were seen striking the battleship kongo on the western-most flank.

Tanaka was now in a state of panic, having lost two of his battleships and being seemingly surrounded by the enemy force. At the very edge of victory, and with the anchorage now unprotected, he was forced to retire west. The task force was turned around and a great vengance was exacted upon the allied destroyers. Of the sixteen attacking flush-deck destroyers, only two had survived, some catching Japanese torpedoes, having better being used against the allied cruisers, and others blanketed by an array of small caliber guns as the capital ships had punched through.

Tanaka had been engaged, and out-maneouvered by a much inferior force. Furthermore, no attempts of rescue could be made for the stricken battleships. The seas around paramushiro jima were now stained with blood and oil.

The enemy's retreat was greeted with pursuit and harrassment strikes





The enemy's withdrawl was underway, however the allies were determined to prevent the escape of the enemy force to the safety of aircover. Operating in independent units, a mass of torpedo boats was unleashed against the enemy force. With the battleships in retreat, the destroyers were ordered to create a perimeter against the fast-moving menace. Despite constant attacks, this wall could not be penetrated. As consolation, torpedoes were successfully placed against the enemy destroyers. As dawn approached, the battle was now over.

Out of concern for aerial and submarine attacks, the entire enemy battleline was organized into a single force, imparting severe limitations upon the tactical mobility of the fleet. These limitations were capitalized upon by the faster, more mobile allied light units.
Though the allied heavy units were themselves much too far away to assist, the lack of large caliber weaponry had proven immaterial. It was concluded that battleships were vulnerable to not only aircraft but as in the sinking of Svent Iztvan decades ago, to highly mobile surface vessels. It was now debated that battleships were more of a liability than a true asset.
