introducing myself

Post by figolin »

Hello folks,

I am a french player of 42, playing this game since the first release (i mean Steel Panthers SSI original edition). I have been addicted to this game but forced to leave it for years due to computer then OS problems.
Then this summer i give a try to make SP2 working on my XP box looking at web to find tips on how to fix sound problems, this is how i discover Matrix Games and the free download version and better of all the large community behind it.

Thank you to all that have made all this real.[&o]

as soon as my credit card permit it, i will buy a full boxed version with MegaCampaign in it (hope for christmas gift[;)]).

Been wargaming a long time. Started out with Avalon Hill boardgames and moved to Steel Panthers 1,2 and 3. Then Talonsoft's East Front and West Front. Still wish those were useable on XP :(

Just discovered SPWAW while trying to make the original Steel Panthers work on XP. Ordered the CD and am playing the downloaded game now. Really great design!!!

I think I read on some thread that the TOAW would be update to run on Win XP and 2000. That's the only reason I quit playing TOAW because I had to upgrade my puter and op system to 2000 for work reasons ... that nixed TOAW several years ago and I never tried those emulator programs and anything ... I'm too finicky about my puter to try too many experiments ... I gotta make a living.

SO all this news about Toaw is great for me

Hello.

So, I just got SP through 8.4 and (obviously) like it. Played a lot of the same Avalon Hill boardgames I’ve seen mentioned in the thread -- Squad Leader and Third Reich and Fortress Europa (does anyone remember Squad Leader the card game?).

Three questions I’m hoping someone can help me with:

1. In the campaign feature, selecting your force: If I select a unit by accident, or say, change my mind and want the PzIII’s instead of the PzIV’s -- I find I can remove the selection from my current roster, but that it disappears from the pool of available units. That is, I can click on the unit on the right-hand side of the screen and get the points returned, but I cannot recover the requisition for that type of unit. So, if I get a total of 4 PzIII groups, when I select one, I never see that one again whether I pay for it or return it.

I tried to remove units with shift-click, alt-click, ctl-click, right-click. What am I doing wrong?

2. Is there a way to get a description or tell what time period/location the scenarios/campaigns are without entering them?

3. On-board, indirect fire: I have a 105 mortar behind a building, out of LOS of some target. Adjacent to the mortar is a squad without radio and out of contact with HQ, but with clear LOS to the target. The squad cannot spot for the mortar, correct? and even though the mortar is on-board/adjacent. If the squad had radio contact, then it could act as a spotting unit. Is that correct?

Well, thanks in advance and hello.

Hiya Steve# - welcome to the forums. So you've just discovered SP:WaW? Well, you won't have to wonder how to spend any free time you have. [;)]

(does anyone remember Squad Leader the card game?).

You mean "Up Front!"? Great game, loved it. Kick myself for not picking up the expansions when they were available.

I find I can remove the selection from my current roster, but that it disappears from the pool of available units. That is, I can click on the unit on the right-hand side of the screen and get the points returned, but I cannot recover the requisition for that type of unit.

Turning Rarity OFF in the preferences should fix that.
Most of us play with True Troop ON/Rarity OFF.

Is there a way to get a description or tell what time period/location the scenarios/campaigns are without entering them?

IIRC, just clicking on the scenario title gives a decription on the right side of the screen, along with authors percieved difficulty and playing time. Doesn't work with campaigns however.

If the squad had radio contact, then it could act as a spotting unit. Is that correct?

I believe that is correct, although I'm not 100% sure. In any case, whether the spotter having direct LOS to target has any effect is still up for debate.

Thanks for your reply.

It’s interesting the compromise you (I mean, “you” in general) have to make between modeling historical accuracy and achieving good game-play. I was reminded of that fiddling around with SPWAW. It’s a good game -- some niggles for me (800x600 screen with large maps, et cetera), but an impressive beast.

Thanks again.

Hi there! Not so much new to SPWAW as returning after a very long absence. I own the "Desert Fox" Megacampaign disk, so that's V5.0 - a "bit old" now, like me I guess!

I liked playing the long campaigns. I noticed that the latest patch was aimed at these so I thought I'd come back to the fold and give those tracks a whirl...so I expect to be in here asking questions for a while over the next few weeks!

About myself: I'm a Quality Engineer working for a small semiconductor company in the UK. My hobby aside from gaming is photography; I enjoy reading, especially ScFi and (of course) Military History. I'm 49 years young, married for 28 years and have a 23 year old musician son, far too large a mortgageand far too small a salary - but hopefully I retain my sense of humour. I look forward to "seeing" you all here. I know that some of you post in other forums here including the WitP one (Hi Terminus!) so I already feel reasonably "at home".

Regards,

Steve.

Welcome back, Steve!

The game has changed some under the hood since 5.0. I jumped in right about that time. I've bought General's Edition, but haven't played the MCs at all because of all the other things the game can do. You might want to check out Das Reich, if you haven't already. It was a large user campaign designed by the folks over at the Depot and it is very very good--comparable to the MCs.

Again--welcome back!

Hi

I have just downloaded SPWAW so am a complete new guy. Only other Matrix game is WITP. I have a partner and two children (2 and 3). I work night shift for an emergency assistance company so with work kids and trying to sleep dont have a lot of time but try to get some free hours a week.

Started boardgaming and minitures almost 20 years ago and enjoyed games such as East Front II. Intend to download the manual, do some reading and try to learn the game - eventually.

Did see SPWAW a lot of years ago and was not hooked on the game then but is looks like there is a lot of support and a lot of work in this game.

Welcome Walkerd!

Just to let you know--the game can be managed on a limited time "budget." Because it is turned based, you can finish a turn or two a night and knock out a scenario in a week or so. You might want to spend some time perusing the forums here and over at the Depot (www.spwaw.com) to get up to speed more quickly. Feel free to ask questions--most of us will freely admit there is *a lot* that we don't know about the game yet we keep coming back. Go figure. [;)] It is *that* good a game.

Hi!

I just finished my first game of SP:WaW, and my first SP game in over 5 years.

I got addicted to SP2:Modern Battles, and I still shed many a tear that WaW currently is only WW2. (I know SP:MBT, and would very much like to play it - if my computer accepted it. :-((( )

IRL, I am a signal officer in the Federal Defence (Bundeswehr) of Germany. I very much enjoy reading; my last discovery is Harry Turtledove (Southern Victory series), which I do devour. My profession is medical computer science, and I am a paramedic for a non-profit ambulance organisation.

Howdy all. I am a 55 yr old gamer in Houston. I started out at age 12 playing D-Day, Stalingrad, Afrika Korps ect... I have not had much time over the past couple of years to play very often and I mainly play against the AI or various family members.
I do have a few questions about SPWAW. I am having a devil of a time loading troops onto vehicles... what is the secret? It is not like Steel 1... any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

Hello texag13 and DingoSaar!

Welcome.

Texag13! You seem to be struggling with loading troops onto vehicles. The vehicle and the unit must locate in the same hex. Hold shift key down and point at the destinated hex to get them into one hex. This should help you.

DingoSaar! It's good to have some more Germans here. That non-profit ambulance activity remains me of Burt Reynolds and Dom Deluise in the Cannonball Run, where they took part in the contest driving an ambulance and claimed to be "wealthy philanthropists cruising around and looking for accidents." Forgive me I'm a fan of stupid movies.
Don't be shocked, I AM funny.

Hi guys, welcome aboard![:)]

They made MBT into WinSPMBT, DingoSaar. If you have not tried MBT in some time, the new version may just work. Its designed for Windows.

Anyways, glad to see you both playing SPWaW. Say hi at the Depot too sometime.
