RE: 19-20 Jan 45
It would be great to see this continue. It's not often an AAR gets to the Operation Olympic stage.

I truthfully dread any prospect on landing on Kyushu or Honshu....I'm hoping to avoid that...will see what L_S_T has to say....totally his call if he wants to go past Auto-victory, and that won't be to far away. Not sure what he has left in the tank after this latest Kamikaze blood letting. Figure there's at least one more massive strike before he folds his hand.

SIGINT/Intel: The Rear Area CV Raiders have gone dark - presumably ENE of Hawaii, just outside air search range from either Hawaii or the West Coast. Most likely, they have turned about and are heading back to North Pacific waters. Most dangerous, they’re continuing SSE to skirt east of Hawaii and raid shipping south of Hawaii. That would of course be a one way trip unless they’ve got a bunch of AOs in tow which is doubtful.
Strategic Bombing Campaign: Bombers rested but Strat bombing VPs increased from 16,128 to 16,302 due to fires still burning. B-29s will continue to rest for a few turns.
West Coast/Admin: A few DEs are sent out to search from LA, but otherwise the few convoys slated to head out are being held in port.
In NOPAC, NSTR.
In CENPAC, CVs Randolph and Bennington form up with BC Alaska, 4 CVE, 2CA, 2CL and DDs and will head out of Pearl on a northeasterly heading in order to locate and destroy the CV Raiders. Not really much striking power with the new air configuration (254F, 30D, 42T), but it will have to do. Could use some of the Corsairs in a strike role, but pilots aren’t really trained for it. In any case, they have to find the target first, and then we’ll go from there.
In SOPAC, it was pretty quiet, just a few uneventful encounters with MTBs and mini subs. No Kamikazes ventured against the DDs on Picket duty. Things may get more hectic next turn as the Tokara Retto Amphib goes in, with the CV TFs moving forward in support off the west, and will begin with the BB TFs bombarding. The CVE TFs in support will go in as four smaller (4-6 CVEs) instead of three larger TFs to see if that helps their survival. Each CV TF will still have a pair of cruisers in support for added AA fire, just less CVEs to target in each TF. A few CVEs lack a full complement of fighters due to replacement delays, but we’ll go with what we have - which still total over 400 fighters aboard. As the Amphib TFs depart for the latest venture, the six damaged CVEs will depart Amami and Tokunoshima for repairs at Hong Kong and Manila next turn. Two more heavily damaged CVEs will remain at Yakushima for a while longer. Meanwhile, Koshiki-jima Retto’s two Amphib TFs completed loading and will depart Naga and head for Miyako-jima next turn as well.
In SWPAC, Yakushima AF reaches level 2, and all the miscellaneous CVE airgroups and fragments that landed there are flown off. This allowed four fighter squadrons to come in to provide CAP over both Yakushima and Tokara Retto. All available fighters will fly LRCAP over Tokara Retto as well, weather permitting of course. I expect a tough fight on Tokara Retto as defenders tally about 20k on a small island - which requires a shock attack. I’m hopeful the 2+ assaulting divisions are enough with the almost month long air and naval softening up. Fingers crossed!
In China, Chinese troops secure the isolated base of Kiukiang, SE of Wuchang. With two Corps across the Han River, they will begin advancing on Hankow and Anking as additional troops move to cross the river. This will be a slow advance due to the time it will take to get troops across the river, and the heavily forested terrain on the east bank. Still unclear of the enemy forces in the area - so far the lack of defenders have been a welcome surprise.
In SE Asia, XXXIII Corps will launch its first attack to secure Shanghai next turn, supported by another BB bombardment run. XXXIII Corps as assembled quite the large force for the attack - 5 Commonwealth Divisions, 4 Armored Bdes, 3 Chinese Corps plus quite a bit of artillery and a lone combat engineer battalion. Defenders now tally over 27k, and have to assume they are well fortified. The Saishu To Amphib TFs are still heading to rendezvous at Taihoku on Formosa and will hold here with their CA TF (2CA, 2CL, DDs, DMS) until Tokara Retto landings are secured and the CVEs/CVs can detach to support.

As I'm writing up this turn's AAR, I get the email from L_S_T on the final turn just completed with the replay attached...so looks like this one is in the books...so second to last turn below!
Highlights – Ceasefire negotiations begin in earnest as Shanghai is liberated; landings at Tokara Retto go very poorly. L_S_T and I have agreed that the “cease fire” negotiations will come to a close with auto-victory and Tracker is showing VP ratio at 1.999-1 now….

Shanghai (SE Asia)
Taichow (SE Asia - flipped)
SIGINT/Intel: Still no clue where the CV raiders went….troublesome. While heavy resistance was expected at Tokara Retto, I didn’t expect the month long prep to have little if any effect. So, defenders remain at fort level 5 and may be in the position to counterattack! Recon shows much less defenses at Koshiki-jima Retto which is a good sign. With cease fire negotiations in progress, I fully expect a major last Kamikaze effort for those who want to give their life for the Emperor.
Strategic Bombing Campaign: Bombers continue to rest, but Strat bombing VPs increased from 16,302 to 16,406 as some small fires are still burning at Nagasaki and Fukuoka. B-29s will hit Nagasaki next turn at night. With Shanghai taken, 10th Airforce US B-24s, supported by long range fighters will attack in daylight and Brit B-24s attack Nagasaki at night.
West Coast/Admin: NSTR.
In NOPAC, NSTR.
In CENPAC, CV Randolph TF (2CV, 4CVE, BC, 2CA, 2CL, DDs) headed NE from Pearl and so far haven’t seen a thing. Will continue to head NE towards the West Coast.
In SOPAC, a few MTBs got past DDs and PTs to torpedo two APAs off Yakushima while the landings go in at Tokara Retto. The landings meet somewhat effective coastal batteries in reply, damaging a few ships, but nothing major. Troops are landed in good order, and no Kamikazes…yet. Most assault transports will move to Yakushima with the supporting CVE and CA TFs to prepare for bringing reinforcements in. On CL TF (CL, DDs) as well as some additional DDs and PTs will remain at Tokara Retto to support supply runs and a likely troop reinforcement on the second day of the turn. A few damaged transports will depart to Manila, while ships needing ammo replenishment (2CL, DDs, DMS) will retire to Amami to replenish. The Koshiki-jima Retto Amphib TFs arrived at Miyako-jima and will move to Amami next turn - may look to land at Koshiki next in lieu of Shaishu To to mitigate the lack of gaining Tokara Retto quickly.

In SWPAC, the dreaded shock attack against Tokara Retto goes very, very wrong. Probably the worse “dice roll” of the entire game for the Allied cause. Assault value of 892 vs. defense value of 318 only garners 1-14 odds with the fort level 5! The assault was crushed with only 700 IJA casualties vs. over 8000 Allied. 1st Cav Div is wrecked, and now the goal is just to hang on and not get pushed back into the sea. Will look to bring over troops at Yakushima to reinforce, starting with a single In Reg next turn. Airpower will focus on ground attacks against the defenders next turn, with fighters providing both sweeps and LRCAP over both Tokara Retto and Yakushima.
In China, Chinese troops advance to Anking and will bombard to see what the defenses look like as more troops come across the Han River. Will continue to build up this bridgehead as quickly as possible and expand from there.
In SE Asia, XXXIII Corps’s attack takes Shanghai on the first day despite the fort level 5, and continues to attack to reduce the defenders. After two days, IJA forces lose about 7500 men while the Allies lost almost 3000. So not an inexpensive assault, but XXXIII Corps troops remain in good shape and will continue to attack to reduce the remaining defenders next turn. Port, AF and repair yards are in very bad shape, but engineers immediately get to work. Transports are re-routed to Shanghai to begin pouring in supplies which will start with LSTs arriving next turn, and transports to follow. The Saishu To amphib continues to hold at Formosa, awaiting developments at Tokara Retto.

Thanks anarchyintheuk! Glad you enjoyed the ride!
25 Jan 45....VJ Day!
The war ends on 25 Jan 45 (only one of the two day turns) after massed Kamikazes pound the CVEs off Yakushima. But it is not enough. With the loss of Shanghai and continued heavy strategic bombing, the Emperor announced hostilities at an end.
Was a great ride for the last 6+yrs with L_S_T. So much so, we're looking at a rematch....with roles reversed.

Congrats and praise for my honorable opponent Ed!
I could not have asked for a better one - a competent player with a solid grasp of the game mechnics, good planer with an excellent strategy, reliable, polite, magnanimous on each occasion I forgot to honor a house rule - a true gentleman.
With Ed's permission I have started reading his AAR. I admit that I was bit jealous to see this thread growing to 53 pages over time, compared to the measly 13 pages my own AAR has reached, and I expected to see a lot tipps and advices from other Allied players - which I would have taken as explanation and consolation for having been beaten earlier than history [;)]. But it appears that the 53 pages mostly comes from Ed having done a detailled and very well structured AAR for each single turn - kudos to that discipline!
We will do a rematch with roles reversed which should start before the end of the month. I hope I will learn enough from this AAR to avoid a Japanese auto-victory!

A very good game from both of you.[&o]
As for the size comparison - I very much wanted to read LSTs AAR which is also well written and illustrated, but I try not to read dueling AARs lest I make a slip and reveal something I should have. If LST is Allied next time, I will read his AAR to ameliorate the size envy ... [;)]

Thanks for the kind words Uwe. I echo those comments for my esteemed Japanese opponent - who is a true master of the mechanics of the game. I couldn't ask for a better opponent and who has become a friend over these years!
I'll start on your AAR this weekend...will be the best prep for our upcoming rematch. Looking forward to it. But, I did get a whole lot of tips and advice in our game - most from other AARs on the forum, which I go through daily. I couple of examples - starting with the AAR itself. Its format was inspired by witpqs' AARs. Jorge_Stanbury's "big wing" tactics of heavy bomber use, and bringing them early to CBI is another. Apbarog's older AAR led me to multiple routes of advance in '43. There are plenty more examples to list - but I'll mention one other that wasn't on the forum. A good buddy of mine has been playing WiTP vs. the AI much longer than I, and I asked him what is the achilles heel to Japan mid war, and he told me one word. "oil". With you're damnable anti-sub operations neutering my subs, his comment let me to focus on the DEI route. Thanks to all for the ideas and inspirations.
Uwe, thanks again for a great game, lots of lessons learned and lots of fun on the best game ever designed. Oh, my wife is "just thrilled" to hear we'll be going at it again...…

Occasional reader, it is always a bit sad when a game come to an end. It will be interesting to see a couple of AARs with the roles reversed.
the biggest kudos are to two players that stuck it out for 6 years.

The biggest kudos are to the significant others who let them.

Well done, gentlemen! I too stuck to IdahoNYer's AAR so as to not inadvertently breach OpSec. I plan to skim LST's AAR to see what was happening over there.
It's great to hear you gents will be doing another one with the roles reversed.
Cheers,
CB
