Australia Command

Japanese fighters continue they attack against CAP’s over Melbourne and other cities. Almost all attacks end with heavy Japanese losses, but even light Allied losses increase pressure on Allied fighter squadrons. Their combat ready planes number dwindle every day. Unfortunately Melbourne is too important to be left without CAP.

Fiji

Japanese forces tried to send support to Fiji. Allied carriers reacted, but TF was detected by submarine that tried to attack US Carrier. IJN withdrew to bases (like Allied carriers), but decided to bomb Suva base with planes. They also used sweeping raids. CAP was withdrew and airbase was heavily damaged. After few days of repairs (bad weather stopped Japanese raids) CAP returned to Suva. US planes returned in perfect moment. 32 Japanese G3M3 Nell bombers without escort attacked Suva on 25th July. All bombers were shot down. On 26th July arrived Zero fighter attack and it was repelled also.

Burma

Japanese Army is moving against Ramree Island once again. British bombers are attacking Japanese divisions to slow them down.
Also enemy is fighting over Port Blair. Japanese are sending more and more Zero fighters, but Hurricanes are great planes to fight them off.

On mainland Tojo fighters are attacking main Allied airbases. For now they only met CAP few times. British forces are fighting only when they have to.

27th - 31st July 1942

Burma

Supply transport convoy arrived to Akyab. Commonwealth fighters created CAP and enemy Tojo fighters used this opportunity to attack Allied planes. As it was expected Tojo squadrons based at Burma are far better then Japanese Tojo squadrons in Australia. Dozens of Hurricane planes were shot down. However supplies were unloaded safely.

Also submarine blockade of Ceylon is getting weaker every day. Allied destroyers sunk I-9 and successful air raids from Colombo chased away other subs.

At Bombay US Army Division arrived. They will help in future offensive against Burma.

Fiji

Japanese naval forces once again tried to break to Suva and once again they were attacked by dive bombers.

Central Pacific

Intelligence claimed that 2 Japanese brigades will try to land at Tarawa. US Navy decided to send Carrier TF based temporary close to Tarawa, to intercept transport ships.

Summary

It looks like position war started at all fronts. Almost all. Air war is very hot and full of losses for both sides.

Ship losses this time will be only for Allied side. Number of sunk Japanese subs, battleships is totally unreal.

Japanese losses in all categories went high. I would call it success but I must remember that also Allied losses in fighters and especially in 4E bombers seriously overgrown production and replacement numbers.

Central Pacific

Last time I wrote about Carrier TF mission that got their orders to intercept Tarawa reinforcements. What I didn’t wrote about was that I also moved convoys to land on Tabiteuea and build base there.

First mission was a mistake that brought doom to second mission.

Allied carriers arrived near Tarawa and found nothing. Japanese troops probably were to far from Tarawa. But carriers near this base put Japan forces to alert. Japan moved forces to intercept Allied CV’s especially that KB was once again ready for battle.
Allied CV patrolled zone for two days and moved east to protect incoming troop convoys for Tabiteuea.
On next day Japnese naval search planes detected Allied convoy. Allied CV raid alerted Japanese navy so they brought more search planes into zone and they detected convoy quicker then they should (I tried few times how close can I get to Tarawa and I could get there almost undetected).

When Japan detected transport ships it was clear for them that they are facing invasion. They moved land based Zero planes and put Jake planes to attack.

But gods of dice rolls didn’t ended playing with fates of allied carriers.

Wasp sunk on this day. Ship had 70 system damage after battle, 35 float and 33 fires. Nothing strange.
But bad luck really hit Yorktown. Ship had 56 system damage, 44 float damage, 30 engine and 8 fire. On next day crew even quelled fires to 7. But 2 days later ship sunk after fires and float damage skyrocketed.

It was second carrier that sunk in state that normally should survive and get to base. No legendary allied damage control was present.

Part of land forces were successfully unloaded at bases, but some transport were lost. Other ships moved away.

Summary

After careful consideration after events of last turn we both decided to restart game.

Japanese carrier force was strong, but my opponent had problems with trained pilot pools and plane pools. I also had problem with my airframes number. In Fiji zone I got almost empty squadrons or with 2-3 planes. And only one big carrier.

I wanted to add planes losses but I just noticed that numbers between Tracker and Game differs. For example for A6M2 Game claims that over 1000 planes were shot down while tracker shows only 894.

And in the end, I would like to thank all the readers that were reading my AAR (and survived my grammar errors). Sorry that I didn’t end it in 1945.

And of course I would like thank my opponent for very interesting game full of surprises and unexpected moves. Even loosing planes and carriers was fun : )

I also had an early war American carrier with medium damage sink suddenly over night when it was making cruise speed a day out of Sydney following a carrier battle a few days before. It had been slowly recovering damage and seemed to be in no danger of sinking. However the end came quickly when flooding started and the damage repair parties were overwhelmed. It appears that the damage repair quality of the American ships is far less earlier in the war and lessons learned with the lose the Lexington were applied in training with the result the damage repair quality dramatically increased in 1943-45.

I will need it. My opponent invaded Hawaii, Midway and Johnson Island on first turn, so it will not be easy...
