Well, I think I waited long enough.  I posted a poll over at the WiF discussion group back on May 15...its been 10 days now and have gotten 31 responses.  The poll is a bit limiting since it is not possible to answer with percentages, only one answer allowed.  The WiF discussion list is made up mostly of long-time WiF'ers and basically Grognards who also play many other wargames.  The results with 31 responses:
NetPlay=13 votes(42%)
PBEM=5 votes(16%)
HotSeat=0 votes(0%)
AI=10 votes(32%)
Solitaire=3 votes(10%)
Conflict with the unexpected: two qualities are indispensable; first, an intellect which, even in the midst of this obscurity, is not without some traces of inner light which lead to the truth; second, the courage to follow this faint light. KvC

How did you word the question?[&:]
Here it is:

Matrix WiF(computer WiF): If you have an interest in buying MWiF(computer WiF), which mode of play interests you most: NetPlay is vs human opponent over internet. PBEM is Play By E-Mail Hot Seat is vs face to face human opponent on same computer. AI only against MWiF program. Solitaire vs yourself.

NetPlay
PBEM
Hot Seat
Artificial Inteligence
Solitaire

(Radio button choices.)

I would probably play AI at first to learn the interface and make the discovery of the map.
After that "tutorial":

Months ?
It already takes months to play the face to face game.
PBEM will need years.

Not necessarily. It would be quite possilbe to send several emails a day for simple stuff. With a little dedication, the two players could complete one or two turns a week - which is about the same as for over-the-board, if I am not mistaken.

We already take years to complete a board campaign, 2 years for a Global war.

Sorry, I was joking, I have no idea of how long PBEM games can take.
I only know about our home games, that have a duration of about 150 hours for playing the 36 turns game, with an average total of 250 impulses played.
