Soviet soldiers had a habit of relieving tension whenever female civilians were encountered. Once German soil was breached, it and other acts of looting and such were considered just desserts given what had been done to their country.
You say that as if they raped every German woman they could catch. There were major accurences when the local front command would let the soldiers have a "free day" when they captured a major city, but these things were not universal by any stretch. Under normal circumstances, the Red Army has a very strict way of dealing with acts it considered "marauding". I'm sure that these things happened of their own accord, soldiers being soldiers, and there being a feeling or retribution. But officially, these acts were punished very harshly. From 1944 onward, rape, looting and mistreatment of prisoners was the quickest way to find onself in a penal unit. By the same token, the rest of the allied armies also had high rates of such occurences, especially the French in Germany.
As for looting, thats a domain of the REMFs, as in every other army. The frontline soldiers contented themselves with taking goodies like watches and pocket knives off the POWs, which was fair game anyway.

See, this is why the entire world should be required to speak English. [;)]

I'm looking to take some Japanese classes largely because of things like this. There are some great video games and movies that come out of Japan, would be nice if I didn't have to read subtitles forever.

I did a quick search for it on NetFlix. They seem to be very good at finding and having titles on DVD I can't find anywhere else but I came up empty. I have to admit from the one clip that worked for me looked good. I'd see it just as long as there were English subtitles.
This game does not have a learning curve. It has a learning cliff.
I found a website that said it was just being released to DVD this month. But all the other sites are in Japanese. Of course the best Yamato experience still remains the book "A Glorious Way to Die"
But seeing Yamato, even in questionable CGI is pretty cool...
Actually looked that book up and decieded to order it. So thanks! [:)]
film made me think why strafing ships in WITP doesn't cause any decrease in AA effectiveness of the ship. Seems like it would make sense. I remember when i was playing Koei's PTO back in the day...fighters were able to strafe warships and decrease their AA. Too bad the same can't be modeled for WITP
In point of fact, in A GLORIOUS WAY TO DIE, the USN apparently used F6Fs in large numbers to strafe the flak crews. It has been a long time since I read the book but I think the author (was he not an officer on the ship?) made a point of saying that Yamato's AAA firepower was too concentrated on the ship and consequently lent itself to destruction by strafing. In any case at some point a witness (the author?) described "blood from the slaughtered flak crews cascading to the main deck from the AAA mounts above".

Yes. The fighters after all had little else to do...there was no CAP to cover Yamato. The author is an American. Believe you are referring to one of his principle witnesses who fought on Yamato, Kobiyashi IIRC. he was a AAA gunner and his vivid descriptions helped grip the reader. Even more bloody were the descriptions of carnage from the bomb hits in the superstructure, particularily the medical ward and radio room. Interesting side bit....Kobiyashi played a gunner in a early movie about Yamato. It may have been the 1977 movie.
Due to the blast effects of the 18.1 inch guns, the Japanese were forced to concentrate the additional AA guns primarily around the middle of the ship. A few choice bomb hits in this area would quickly create a charnal house. The two waist 6.1 turrets had to be supressed in order to make room for the additional AA.
I don't know if you have watched these videos about the attack to the Yamato (japanese film).
Thanks for the links!
BTW, last year there was thread here about this movie in making (and some pictures of the partial 1:1 model they build for it)...

Are there any figures how many USN planes were downed and damaged by Japanese AA on Yamato?
if you have bought your dvd player last year or two - yours should be able to play all dvds regardless of the region. [:D]
Where did you get this from? [;)]
All officially sold DVD players (both for PCs and stand alone devices) are still sold as regional locked... this wasn't changed...
The only thing that did change is the possibilities of breaking that region lock using various region free firmwares or remote control hacks (i.e. to enter specific codes stream via original service remote or some general purpose programmable remote controller)...

Only 10, with 12 airmen lost.
Apparently, lack of any CAP, and such a huge main target, within neatly ordered TF, made for very easy manouvering by US pilots (+ already mentioned deck strafing)
