On the other hand, it could be a successful platformer as there isn't much competition and the genre is old-school anyway.
Right: roots of Duke Nukem is with platforming. First two games were just that and there have been more since Duke Nukem 3D.

Too bad they didn't simply make more platformers instead of going after the pipe-dream of Duke Nukem Forever...
It's not like it would magically become more enjoyable just because it's FPS.

Also, a remake of Raptor would be nice.

With all the buzz the release of existing footage and the like has gotten, I suspect someone will pick up the rights to DNF.

Duke...WHO?.....Only Duke I know was the guy that made all them westerns.....LOL
Actually I did play a couple of them but I was not into FPS games all that much except for Heretic which could be played with a friend and we had a lot of fun with it. It was one of the first of its type.

seems like a lot of people are happy about this..but I don't really see it being a good thing for the industry or fellow gamers to have a big name like this be canceled then have a circus of litigation surrounding it; makes developers in the future play it safe and create games that aren't risky but produce profits and can be made in a short amount of time.

One wonders if Duke Nukem IS still a big name game series. How long has it been since he popped up in a title?

Except that Duke Nukem Forever was neither "risky" nor "unprofitable". It was just another FPS.
It's their fault that the development took so long and it's their fault that they changed engines so many times.

If they couldn't make a modern FPS before the engine they are working on gets obsolete, then they should have kept making platform games.

18 years ago, and title was Duke Nukem. 2nd game is Duke Nukem II, which came out in 1993, and Duke Nukem 3D was released in 1996.

Next games after DN3D were Duke Nukem 64 for Nintendo 64 in 1997 and Duke Nukem: Time to Kill for PlayStation in 1998. Former is just conversion of DN3D to N64 and later is new game that plays something like Tomb Raider (I've seen it in action but didn't play myself). Manhattan Project was released in 2002. There are many other games, and you can see them in Wikipedia

If you have your original Duke3d CD, then grab the Hi Res Pack, it makes it a very good looking game (eye candy wise) and you get the great gameplay that Duke had; of which I think is missing from most games of its ilk today - personality. While you're Googling, look up some tools for playing Duke3d online in multiplayer mode.

P.S. The Hi-Res pack updates the game for play on Windows (i.e., not in a DOS environment) and thus you it has full mouse-look controls just like any contemporary 3d shooter. Really a blast...my kids and I have spent many hours playing it via LAN.

Funny, I was just thinking about how I would go about doing this for an upcoming LAN party with some old friends. DN3D was what we used to play many years ago, (COOP Mode) and it was great fun. I would run a batch file that would load the nic drivers and hook up using RG6 coax. No Windows. Bare DOS.

But yeah, the low res graphics were the only let down of the game by todays standards. So I'm taking a look at the hi res pack right away. Cool !

The Hi-Res pack runs Duke in Windows and it's *very easy* to LAN it. I do with my boys all the time. Looks and runs great - kick butt game....like an old friend with a face-lift. :)
