I'm confused : IIRC, full 5.0 version was around 400 MB, stereo sound patch around 200 MB. So, how full 7.1 version (around 420 MB) can include both ?

Regards.

Bear in mind that the stereo sounds were replacement sounds for what was already in the game. When you had v5.01 in one hand, and the stereo sound files in the other, you actually had two copies of the sounds. Now the stereo sounds are already in the game, replacing the ones that were there before. I doubt they are significantly bigger than the originals.

Download links dead

Post by EchelonOne »

Anybody know of working links to download the new/full version of SPWaW v7.1? All of GamesDomain links are dead and have been for over a week now at least. A reliable source is needed I think. Any clues???

The first US, the first UK and Sweden link all work for me. All others appear to be dead though.

The first US link is gamedomain.com 35kbs if you're very, very lucky.

I downloaded from those links about a week ago but it took several trys. I finally got on the first US link. You just have to be persistent. If you don't get a download window, just cancel and keep trying. You will eventually get in. Warning: even with my DSL line it took nearly two hours. Slow link.

Looking at this thread, it seems to me that it could be a good idea, especially for newbies, to write a small install guide (either with patching from 5.01 to 7.1, or a direct 7.1 install, with the OOB fixes explained as well).

What do you think ?

Not so from here: The US and UK links work, all of the others produce nothing but error pages. Problem is, the links that do work are the slowest I have seen since I had cable IP installed. I started the downloads in each case where it was possible and one of them came up with a 49 hour download. With cable this should be in the area of 45 minutes to an hour, not 2+ days.

Great idea, nice try, better luck next time Matrix.

All I can say is keep trying them because this is the best its going to get. There is no way we can afford the bandwidth for the full game.

How about submitting it to Cnet or Ziff-Davis?

GamesDomain Links

Post by EchelonOne »

Well you can forget about using a download manager, or at least Gozilla. I deleted Gozilla from my computer and was able to connect with the first US download link. It would have been kind of nice to be able to resume this download if I get disconnected, but I guess I'll have to pray I don't. I still think alternate download sources are needed.

I got slightly better results at 3 PM EDST - the first US link gave me in the neighborhood of 110 speed, which would be about 1 hr 15 minutes for the entire 420 megs. The other links did not respond, but having one in reasonably good condition is better than what I got before.

David is giving good advice: Keep trying the link of your choice, at least the US link does respond. How this will work with a slower dialup service I don't know - will admit to now being spoiled rotten with cable IP. But I remember the days of seven and eight hour downloads, indeed I do.

Only 7-8 hour? :)

I remember downloading IE4 with a 14.4 modem and no d/l manager. Took the 'puter to work after hours on a Friday, hooked it up, started the d/l. Went back Monday afternoon (3 day weekend) and it was just finishing up.

I would not have the patience, Bern. My theory is that any app that requires more than a few hours to download is not worth the bother. I figure I lived without it before, I can live wiithout it from here on.

I sort of got into that mode compliments of AT&T who charged us by the minute way back when - I was on and off for mail, a gliimpse or two at a website and that was that. When unlimited usage came in, it helped but I've never gotten over the bias - two or three hours, sure. Four or five hours, it had better be the greatest thing since sliced bread or canned beer. Over five hours - what for?
