At Last...

Post by Orzel Bialy »

as herr Oberst continues to plot out reports on the map infront of him I receive the report he has been waiting for.
"Oberst, russische Rüstung ist gesehen worden." I say to him as soon as the words come over my headset. He stops writing and immediately wants to know where they have been spotted. I relay the information to him and he knods as he plots it on the map.
"Ivan denkt ihn hat gefunden eine Weise innen." he says softly. I agree and ask what we will do now?
"zeigen Sie ihm eine andere Falle." herr Oberst replies with a slight smile. I glance at him and then at Karl....herr Oberst does not look up and Karl only shrugs his shoulders slightly.
Although we have lost two tanks...one to the south and one in the center...our line is still intact. Ivan has probed and prodded, perhaps dented the line in places...but he has not broken it. Perhaps that is why we now see some of the new units moving up and into the fray?
The battle seems to have approached the boiling point now.

first one breakthrough point is made and then another! Slowly the people's army begins to move into the enemy territory at long last. We can smell the facist pig presence is near...

Elsewhere the fighting and duelling continues but soon we will embrace our old friends...

Timely Response...

Post by Orzel Bialy »

Everywhere Ivan seems to be pushing on the lines...testing to see which sector might cave in. So far they bend, but do not break.
To the south Major Kappel's Tiger is again attacked by a Soviet ground attack aircraft...and herr Oberst allows him to draw back among the trees to avoid further "recognition" from strafing attacks.
Hauptman Keller, ever aggressive, continues to duel with Russian infantry that attempts to penetrate his area...he allows them to come in and then snaps at them...so far this has worked.
Hauptman Kleinamen has also done well in keeping Ivan from making much headway out of the small town to the north. Fierce Russian artillery fire pounds the are...a sign to herr Oberst that Ivan believes he can strike there.
We monitor the reports...it's Ivan's armor we wait to hear from. The rattle of small arms fire continues to dominate the landscape and we will not react until we hear the roar of panzer cannons..then we will know that Ivan has made his move.

Disappointing Results....

Post by Orzel Bialy »

Major Kappel reports in that he must fall back from his forward positions to the south due to "heavy pressure from Russian infantry".
"Mein Gott! Was denkt er?" herr Oberst says angerly and takes the radio set from my hands.
"Major Kappel." Thielemann barks into the mic twice...there is a long pause before Kappel replies.
"Kommen zu diesem Sektor sofort zurück!" herr Oberst yells, his face is actually flushed from anger. "Verstehen Sie? Sofort!"
Karl glances at me and I back at him as we can hear, faintly, Major Kappels attempt to validate his decision to fall back. From the look on herr Oberst face...he does not agree.
"Ich wünsche nicht Entschuldigungen!" Thielemann replies to the Major's reasoning...it is clear he is trying to control his anger now.
"die Russen dürfen nicht Ihren Sektor." he says and then hands the set back to me.
"Dieser Mann wird beendet." he mutters to himself, but I hear it clear enough and herr Oberst knows it. It would appear the Major's days are numbered as commander of his units.
All along the front we continue to snipe and trade shots with Ivan, waiting to see what he does next. To the north Hauptman Briess conducts an armored probe, to gauge the Russian positions...he loses two captured T-34's to intense Russian infantry and armor return fire....yes Ivan is still there. Thielemann has me recall Briess' recon en force immediately...he will not allow him to get strung out and jeopardize the line.
Outside of the panzer, the day grows warmer...but the pungent smell of battle has long overpowered the sweet smells of blossoming plants that, merely hours ago, once filled our nostrils.
War is a terrible thing.

The colonel has a good laugh when he hears the news... Apparently the facist pigs came looking for news of us in the North... It had been a quiet sector because everyone was waiting for the mines to be cleared away. So along come the facists and run straight into our engineers who are picking a corridor through the mines. They quickly strap on some demolition charges to the german tanks :)

Then the two platoons of our tanks make their presence felt, quickly putting out their cigarettes and breaking up their sunbathing to fire a few shots at the facists. It must have been a surprise to those facists! I bet the survivors will run away with their tails between their legs now...

elsewhere we lost a lone t-34 but no matter. we are moving elsewhere and soon we will emerge!

A Brawl Erupts...

Post by Orzel Bialy »

Hauptman Briess radios in the news...his force has become entangled in a fierce fight to the north. Not able to disengage without jeopardizing precious armor...he instead sends up more support!
"Dieser konnte unser Demise sein." Herr Oberst says as he wipes his face with one hand and lifts his cap with the other. This is not what we had anticipated.
To make matters worse...Major Kappel radios in as well. He regrets to inform herr Oberst that he is not able to follow through with the orders to redeploy along the forward positions.
"Wir können in der Mühe Walter sein." herr Oberst says as he looks at me...his eyes are lackluster suddenly.
For the next few seconds there is silence...and then we resume work on formulating our plans. Herr Oberst returns to his map and begins to relay orders that will hopefully restore balance to the battle plans that have seemingly gone astray.

Herr Orzel has bumped into my breakthrough force which were sneaking through a forested hill in the Southern sector... all hell broke loose and I'm happy to say the facist pigs came out the losers!

In the North, he has reinforced his recon by force and we can't kill tanks fast enough! Even elsewhere we have had some successes also... The fight is on now!!! Glory to the people's army eh colonel?

General Advance!!!

Post by Orzel Bialy »

Reports flood in...everywhere the Russians seem to be creeping forward. After much soul searching herr Oberst decides the time has come to try something novel! A general advance!
Michael fires up our faithful "Anneliesa" and with a jar and a rev of the engine we spring forward from our camoflauged position.

As we do so I call out to all the units..."Allgemeiner Fortschritt! Alle Maßeinheiten vorwärts!"
From every unit comes a cheer...we will sit back and wait no longer! Ivan must be met with cool steel and hot lead!
I look at herr Oberst as we roar along the open fields...he smiles slightly and nods. All will be alright...I can see it in his eyes...and it makes me believe.

Fury unleashed!

Post by hellcat »

The landscape has changed... the colonel is beside himself with rage! German tanks are everywhere and they are advancing! In the North we continue to pick them off as fast as they come forward. In the centre more German tanks appear over the crest of a hill and onto the roads, we fight back killing two more. In the South, on 'breakthru hill' the Germans have contained us with a Tiger and several tanks and our surprise has been lost to us. All along the line fighting of the most desperate kind has erupted. Tanks duelling at close range or point blank. The infantry do what they can but for the moment, this is a titanic clash of armored power!

The Advance Continues....

Post by Orzel Bialy »

We roar along at the best speed our faithful "Anneliesa" can make, bouncing about as we move forward over the rough ground of the Russian steppe.
The growl of the engine fills the panzer to the point that the reports coming in over the radio are much harder to hear...I have to strain to hear them.
To the north Hauptman Briess has become pinned down...there is a lot of Russian armor roaming about up there apparently.
In the center we have re-taken the ridge we held at the start of this battle...
In the south the breakthrough Ivan had sought to take advantage of has been crushed! Between Hauptman Kleinamen and Major Kappel they have managed not only to destroy a large amount of armor...but have also routed a number of infantry and infantry support weapons! I pass this information on to herr Oberst...he smiles.
Everywhere we continue to advance. It is obvious from some of the positioning of his units that Ivan did not quite expect this! Everywhere there are the sounds of raging panzer battles...and the explosions of those unfortunate enough to be on the receiving side of shells that found their mark!
We brace for battle as "Anneliesa" carries us near the actual front...Karl swings the turret towards a line of trees to the right...a AP round is already in the breach...we are ready for battle!

all out fighting!

Post by hellcat »

we have killed 4 enemy tanks but is it enough to stem the tide suddenly falling upon us? The enemy have been stopped short in the town but the Tigers are a worry for us once more. When will STAVKA give us something which can tackle this menace???

The clash of armor continues with the infantry little more than fearful onlookers on both sides.....

The Thunder of Battle....

Post by Orzel Bialy »

We are jarred about as Michael takes "Anneliesa" over some more rough ground, leading into the woods where the Soviet counter-attack was shattered.
We pass several burning panzers, both German and Russian....some are idle and hardly damaged...others have their structures bent and twisted and blackened by the soot from the fires that rage on and around them. One T-34 burns most fierce...it's large turret hatch is blown open, allowing a jet of pulsating flames to surge skywards...like the flaming jet of a blowtorch. Even with the noise our "Anneliesa" is making as we crunch through the forest, we can hear the dull roar and hiss of the flaming wreck as we pass it.
Over the radio we hear Hauptman Keller...two more Ivan tanks are burning in the center. However, Ivan's artillery has made his advance far more difficult...despite herr Obersts encouragement the brave Hauptman replies that he doesn't know if he can continue...his losses are too heavy.
This discouraging news is followed by more from up north...Hauptman Briess has gone silent. A commander of a Stug then reports seeing Briess' PzIV...it has been almost completely destroyed and in such a state that survivors are doubtful. So yet another promising officer and fellow comrade has fallen on the steppes of Russia...never to see Germany again.
Even with this news we continue to press forward...Herr Oberst believes that if pressed Ivan's front might crumble at some point and that would allow us to take the field. It is a daring gamble...much like two heavy weight fighters who are both tired and have realized that only a knock-out punch can decide the match...the Russians and ourselves continue to trade blows.
Who will break it remains to be seen.

Pull Back!

Post by hellcat »

'Order the retreat!' the colonel barks... I look at him, disbelievingly! 'but...'

'Do It!' His face grim...

We pull the remains of our battered force back. It seems we have reached the limit of our salient... for now...

Hats off to Orzel for a solid defence. I can't give the scores as my readout says 0 so hopefully it will when I send the file to Orzel...

I think, more than anything I was beaten by the mines, of which there were ALOT

Although I still had some armor left at the point of surrendering this, I don't think they would have been any match for the remaining Tigers. Which really is a problem in this period, hopefully Summer Fury II - KURSK will address that and we'll be onto that quite shortly.

My rolling paradrop was a failure apart from those early victories. Orzel mopped them and my partisans up with vigour and we could just not get through to support them in time due to the mines. We were still picking our way through this - in most cases - double layer when the counterattack came but it had cost us many vehicles and men in the early rounds. As usual, many partisans never showed up for the fight either :(

This was my first real outing with the KV2 which proved itself to be an interesting piece of kit. Capable of tank killing close up it was also lethal to infantry and performed ok, but not well. In fact, I purchased too many of them.

That said it was quite a fight, especially the sheer madness towards the end. To have continue would only have delayed the inevitable I think.

The Storm Passes...

Post by Orzel Bialy »

We roll up onto a hill and break out of the forest canopy...burning wreckage of the battle surrounds our "Anneliesa" on all sides...and we grind to a halt in order to take in the view.
Hauptmans Keller and Kleinamen report in on the radio the best news we have heard all day...Ivan is seemingly pulling back all along the front! The news comes as a shock in some ways...for we did not expect it.
Herr Oberst pops open his hatch...I open the side one...and we prop ourselves out to take in the scene.
Our eyes confrim the reports...here and there we make out Russian infantry and some armor pulling back...most still under fire from our units. Ivan retreating! There is something we haven't seen in months...and the feeling it fills us with is a very welcomed one at that!
Herr Oberst scans the field with his Ziess binoculars and I can see a grin on his face...victory. Just seeing it on him makes me smile as well...it was a gamble and it paid off. I congratulate him on his leadership and the victory it has attained us this day...it was indeed a furious battle.
