(Informally) Announcing a New Civil War Game from WCS

From the first clash at Manassas to the epic confrontation between Lee and Grant, the Brother Against Brother series will bring new levels of historical detail and realism to the battles of the Civil War. This regimental-level game, created by the developers of the award-winning Forge of Freedom, builds on that game’s acclaimed tactical engine, adding scrupulously researched orders of battle, high-quality map graphics, command and control rules reflecting the numerous challenges faced by army commanders, and plenty other features. Beginning with The Drawing of The Sword – which recreates the pivotal opening battles at Manassas , Wilson ’s Creek, Mill Springs and Williamsburg – Brother Against Brother lets you refight the Civil War from start to finish.

I agree with kafka.  I loved COG:EE, but I don't particularly enjoy tactical gameplay, and always opted for Quick Battles.  Looking forward to next year's Grand Strategy title, no matter what the era.

tgb,
We should have one grand strategy game based on a new engine that doesn't have tactics out later this year, so you almost certainly won't need to wait until January or later.

Good to see you back in these parts (i.e., a WCS-related Matrix forum).

Don't worry, we have at least one more of those planned, most likely for sometime next year. (There's no way of knowing if it will cover a period that's of interest to you, of course.) But we're also branching out, with this and two more games based on completely new engines likely to appear this year.

I trust it wil cover the Seven Years War.

We're not yet ready to make a general call for testers, though it wouldn't hurt to let me know if you're interested now. Thanks for asking.

We are hoping to include it. EricBabe, lead developer and programmer, has been examining the code with that in mind, since we definitely see the value in having multiple resolutions permitted. Please understand that it is very difficult to retrofit this sort of thing into an existing engine, and that when the COG/FOF engine was first designed fixed screen resolutions were still the norm. But this is definitely something we hope to do. I'll let you know definitively as soon as I know definitively whether we'll be able to pull it off or not.

Widescreen support would certainly make a difference for me. 1024x768 just doesn't cut it anymore.

You're shooting yourselves in the foot if you don't support wide screens. I'd delay release in order to ensure this.

We hear you. Our two new engine certainly support wide screen -- the only reason it's a question with BAB is that the underlying engine is a few years old (though certainly not the worse for wear!). I'll let you know as soon as we know if we can pull off the retrofitting.

Goodaye,

I'll have to jump in here as well and state that my tolerance for buying new games that don't accomodate native widescreen resolutions is pretty thin.

Cheers,

Sorry to go slightly off topic but is there the possibility you will give Napoleonic battles the same treatment in the future? This game system sounds fabulous and would suit these, and many other, battles equally well I think.

This came up elsewhere. (Wargamer.com?) We currently have no plans for Napoleonic land battles, though this system could certainly support such a release. It really depends on sales: if sales of BAB's releases over the next year or two are strong then we would definitely consider it. There is a better chance of our doing a Napoleonic naval battles game, using the new naval tactical engine, as that would involve far less new coding and graphics. But a decision on that is a few months away still.

I have to agree as well. This game excits me, but if widescreen support is not available i won't be purchasing it.

Check out this thread: tm.asp?m=2471819

I expect to see plenty of groveling emoticons (this one: [&o]) for Eric in that thread, since this did require some rather difficult, time-intensive programming...

I am unfortunately not so much for civil war games, but I love your COG. So I hope to see more of this kind in the future, especially with grand strategy and tactical battles layers.
