RE: Manila Falls

Post by Connfire »

From the aide-de-camp of the US Navy Commander-in-Chief to the esteemed Senator from Massachusetts, in the waiting room outside the Oval Office in the White House:

"Well sir, its like this: We tried telling him the good news first - that we sunk a minelayer and a cargo ship in the last few days. And then once he was warmed up we told him, 'oh by the way, all forces in Manila surrendered today. And those guns you spent millions of dollars to defend it against a sea attack - well, it was the craziest thing - they attacked us overland, not a single ship was fired upon. Oh and before I forget, we're probably going to lose another submarine. Oh, and also...'

That's when he pointed at the Admiral and said he wanted to speak to him privately in his office. They've been in there for a couple hours now. I'm sorry they're keeping you waiting this long".

DD Tatnall, DD-125, gets credit for sinking the first Japanese submarine in the war.
MSW Tanager, AM-5, had over 50% flooding, and foundered 5 days later on her way back to Pearl Harbor. She had a short, but active life. Commissioned in 1918, she was assigned to escort duty out of the Azores during World War I. That same year, 1918, she delivered serum to BB Georgia, whose crew was suffering from the Spanish Influenza outbreak. After the war, she was put to work sweeping minesfields in the North Sea. She was badly damaged when one exploded too close to her in June 1919. She was out of action till the end of the year, and was reassigned to Pearl Harbor in 1920, where she remained until she foundered on July 23, 1922.

AS Rainbow is the most hated Allied ship in the first three months of any WPO campaign.

It will not be missed :)

Hey, just so people know, I'm going to be tied up with something for the rest of the week. So right now the campaign and AAR are on temporary hiatis. I may be able to sneak in a turn or two, but more likely not. But hopefully things are back to normal next week before I go into WPO withdrawl [;)]

Why didn't DD Yukaze come to the party? [;)]

AS Rainbow is the most hated Allied ship in the first three months of any WPO campaign.

It will not be missed :)

Captain may have failed the skill / aggressiveness check.

Crew may have failed the experience / morale check.

Battle was too close, with not enough frontline space available. :)

Sorry to see her go, she had a good run, and caused the Imperial Navy a lot of problems - even dishing it out at the very end. She was playing hide and seek with the IJN for some time - her luck finally ran out at Butuan. See post # 28 or 30 for a picture of that action.

After being shelled by SS No. 19 on 7/19, AD Melville lost her heroic battle to stay afloat today. She actually made it to Pearl Harbor, but she was settling fast, and due to fears she would block the channel, the order was reluctantly given to let her sink. Her remaining crew was taken off by tugs, and she was towed not far from where MSW Tanager went down 6 days before, just outside the shipping lanes near the Pearl Harbor entrance. There are conflicting reports as to why she was sailing unescorted in an area known to contain enemy submarines. The fact that right after she sank a Navy launch took her captain and officers to a seperate facility on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor has lead to rumors that an investigation has been ordered.
