Distant Worlds has stopped working
RE: Distant Worlds has stopped working
Hi everyone,
I am glad I found this post as I also had crash on launch, I could not make it to the game.
This is the first time I meet a game that requires Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player to run properly.
I am a kind of enthousiast user and I had these two features disabled because I didn't need them.
This is quite annoying but it's ok. I would have never thought that it could be for this reason.
It would be good to specify clearly somewhere that those two softs are required, maybe during installation or to pop up a
warning message if they are not installed.
Anyway thank you !

Well, this makes more sense. A few months back I was chasing a startup crash that I couldn't resolve.
Turns out I always turn off WMP ... so that's likely the problem. Wish I'd known about this then!

RE: Distant Worlds has stopped working
Ever since installing Win 7, my re-install of DW has been flaky starting. So much that I've not played it in several months. So I'm going to try to fix this with a re-install and I want to verify a couple of things.
First, are the patches cumulative? By that I mean is it only necessary to keep the latest patch for DW and the latest for RotS, or do I need to keep the intermediate patches too?
Second, what is the proper installation order? When I install DW, do I patch it first and then install RotS, or do I install RotS and then patch? Or does the latest patch of RotS take care of all the updates.
Here are all of the files I have, what are the necessary files and their installation order. Thanks for any advice you may be able to provide.
DistantWorlds-SetupRelease-DR-v102.exe
DistantWorlds-Update-v1060.exe
DistantWorlds-ReturnoftheShakturi-SetupRelease-PL-v15.exe
DistantWorlds-ReturnoftheShakturi-Update-v1501.exe
DistantWorlds-ReturnoftheShakturi-Update-v1508.exe

Yes, the patches are cumulative so you need only the latest one. The same applies for your install order...install DW, ROTS and latest ROTS patch (1.5.0.8)

Thanks, Data. I re-installed and everything seems kosher now, save for the irritating security popup. That's trivial though.

RE: Distant Worlds has stopped working
Ive tried everything mentioned in this thread and still can't get it to working. Was working great....I have no Ideal what the problem is....I did a clean uninstall(including the document/setting files)-I have windows media and IE installed. I reinstalled DW-RotS and patch 1508 in that order.[&:]
I want to buy the new add on but afraid that it won't work also. Any answers guys?[&o]

What about if just install Distant Worlds original? (i.e. without ROTS) Do you get a more detailed error message in that case?ORIGINAL: Titanwarrior89

Yes with just Distant worlds installed a long tabbed error comes up.....don't remember what it said.

If I had to guess, I would say that Windows Media Player or Internet Explorer are not installed, or are disabled somehow - but you've ruled that out.
That error message with just DW original installed would help more.

RE: Distant Worlds has stopped working
Question. When I ran the Dxdiag under the systems page it showed directx 11. I have windows vista, I thought windows 7 only had 10 or higher. So since directx 9c is not installed according to my system report(I thought 9c was) will that keep Distant Worlds from starting up with out error? It was running fine-then just stopped working......read earlier post in this thread.

RE: Distant Worlds has stopped working
You will definitely need DirectX 9.0c installed on your PC. The easiest way to ensure that this is the case is to let the Distant Worlds installation program install it for you.ORIGINAL: Titanwarrior89

After installing this you should check that you can see the following entries in the folder C:\Windows\assembly\
Microsoft.DirectX (version 1.0.2902.0)
Microsoft.DirectX.DirectSound (version 1.0.2902.0)

RE: Distant Worlds has stopped working
Elliotg, I checked in the file and Directx version 1.0.2902.0 is in the file along with the direct sound(same version). Note: I bought Legends hoping that would help(long shot). It didn't.[&:]

Now that you have Legends, there's a new trouble-shooting possibility:ORIGINAL: Titanwarrior89

Download the latest Legends patch (1.7.0.2). I think you need a Matrix members account to get this.
DW Legends 1.7.0.2 has logging that writes technical info to a text file if the game crashes. If you have a crash this file can be found in the following location:
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Code Force Limited\Distant Worlds\1.7.0.2\DW_CrashDump.txt
Please post the text of this file here in this thread and I can get a better idea of what is going wrong.
Thanks
