Nederland is the Dutch name for the Netherlands and the short name for the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is also the name of several villages:

I posted it because it seems odd to avoid an acronym found in an atlas for an obscure acronym. It is not a big deal to me if that’s the way you want to do it.


But you might note that I previously brought up my missgivings about acronyms for minor countries.

We are using abbreviations, not acronyms. The latter are formed by taking the first letter (or few letters) from a series of words.

You are probably using the International Olympic Committee (IOC) three-letter abbreviation country codes instead of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) three-letter abbreviation country codes.

Please, don't take it personally, my post was not directed at anybody in particular - it's just that I find it depressing when I see Steve posting three times in this thread about the "NED vs NE vs NET vs you name it" controversy whereas we've all been waiting (well, certains have even been working) for years to see this game delivered.

You might have noted that every monthly report starts with: "I monitored all the threads in the MWIF World in Flames forum daily" which is good but also scary because it makes every poster potentially responsible for wasting Steve's time.
That's why I decided to restrain myself to 4 posts over 6 years... that plus the fact that obvioiusly, I am not an English native speaker [;)]

Yes, I have been working on it forever. Patrice can vouch for the fact we were both involved in what he likes to call the ADG WiF Alpha. I was on the MWiF beta test team. Which means I have to be careful and not violate the NDA.

I have probably done more unit write ups than anyone else. If not I probably come in second or third.

NE looks more sensible than NED? More so if thats what was on the original counters.

As a Dutchman, my opinion is that NED is the only right distinction to use for the Dutch forces.
This is also the abbreviations used at sportevents for Dutch contestors and at several international agency's around the world.
You could use NL as a shorter abbreviation, since that is the internation distinction code used for Dutch automobiles, but I think NED is definitely better.

However, after reviewing the European map (I know, this is very - or perhaps even to late- , but I accidently found out that MWIF is being programmed just a couple of weeks ago), I have seen two serious geographic mistakes on the Dutch portion of the map:

The Zuider Zee did not exist anymore after 1932. After the closure of the Afsluitdijk, the old Zuiderzee (see also the way it is written) was renamed as "IJsselmeer". During the war with Germany, there was the "IJsselmeerflottielje", who patrolled the lake in the five days of war, before they were scuttled to prevent the ships from capture by the Germans.

The second one is the position of the name "Arnhem". The battlefields there are only 20 kilometers from the German Border, so it should be shifted one hex to the east.

I haven't gotten the time yet to go through all the threads in here (I'm halfway by now), but I am very impressed by the work that has been done. I never could imagine that a game as complex (and ADG made it even more complex during the 13 years since I last played the game) could be made into a PC game. [&o]
