RE: Question about Turn Speed

Post by 6079SmithW »

RAID 1 is quite fast, since the data needs only to be read from a single disk. Without knowing the model you have I can only directly compare with my own, which is a Netgear ReadyNAS. This is apparently spec'd to write somewhere between 16 and 50 MB per second, so substantially slower than a SATA disk. But that is in a RAID 5 configuration.

Also, if you write and erase a lot of data on the NAS, your disks could be fragmented, which would also slow down writes. But the biggest bottleneck IMHO would be the network connection, particularly if you are using the NAS for anything else at the same time, such as streaming to your TV or downloading anything to it.

...there is really no reason to play directly off a NAS.

Well the only reason I want to play off a NAS is that sometimes I like to play at the desk in my office and sometimes I like to play on the couch in front of the TV, and I'd like to be able to play the same game in both places without shifting files around.

This doesn't actually work very well, however, because I have different resolutions on my monitor and on my TV.

Numdydar, do you have any idea if it would work better if I ran the program from my local machine but saved the GAM file to the NAS?
I think that's your best bet. Install the game on both machines, let the auto-saves go local and just start and save your end session game file by browsing to the NAS. Then you also benefit from having Screen Layout and Map View files that are tailor-made to your current display.

Use a cloud service like Box/Dropbox etc.
