In the modern world one does not swing axes, but rather baseball bats. To a young ensign standing quarterdeck watch waaaaaaaaaaay back in Nov '72 the loading of 10 gross of baseball bats aboard USCGC Duane just prior to my 2nd patrol (Ocean Station Bravo: 56-30N, 52-00W I think) was something of a intriguing mystery. The first night on station we had a bit of a blow. The next morning the following blared over the 1MC: "Now all hands, O-3 and below not actually on watch, lay to the Bosun's Hole". And the mystery was explained!!![;)]
