RE: Trouble downloading updates

Post by Marc von Martial »

Find out who your ISP is (ISP = Internet Service Provider), the guys that support and bill your internet connection.

Download a freeware "Trace Route" tool, for example VisualRoute and trace route to "www.matrixgames.com". You can look for any bottlenecks between your PC and our server.

I also get an error after about 2 MB of the transfer has been received.

Error downloading file. (#99, Line 1)

Unknown error.
update.matrixgames.com//HTTR_patch_v2179k.zip

I am running Windows XP with a Cox Cable Internet connection. I do not have SP2 installed yet.

I tried accessing ftp://update.matrixgames.com, but no anonymous FTP access is allowed. I have not done a traceroute yet. I don't understand what the high security is with the patch. Why don't you just put it on an anonymous FTP site so we can download it. I would prefer to use a download utility like GetRight, which has options for retrying and such.

OK, I was able to download the update. First, I disabled the Microsoft Internet Firewall which is built into Windows XP.

But, the download still didn't complete, so then I disabled the firewall in my cable modem router (enable DMZ mode), which is of course very dangerous, but somehow the download completed successfully. Very strange, because VisualRoute reported problems every time I tried to traceroute to www.matrixgames.com. Below is a copy of the traceroute report when I had no firewall active.

After the update installed, I re-enabled my Linksys firewall and verified it by going to the "Shields Up" web site. (You can google it.) Then, I downloaded McAfee Stinger, which I'm running now, to make sure that I didn't get any nasty infections while I was exposed to the evil Internet. ;) (You can Google "McAfee Stinger" as well. It's a free download.) I was patched up on Windows XP, with the exception of SP2, so I figured I probably would not get nailed in the 20 or so minutes it would take to download.

I don't necessarily recommend this route, but just letting you know that I was able to update. It could be a coincidence that it worked when I disabled the firewalls. I honestly don't know.

FYI, I removed myself from the traceroute report.

Duh. Sorry, I somehow missed the note about anonymous FTP access above. [8|]

Er... I guess it's non-anonymous.

We have a pub FTP:

ftp://ftp.matrixgames.com
port: 21
username: anonymous
password: your email adress
use PASV mode if possible

On top of that we also have a normal "downloads" page (check top right of your browsers [;)] )

What you have been trying to access directly is the True Update server. That doesn´t work of course.

You can use download clients like Getright.

That happens once in a while with cable modems and the True Update application.

Well, because we have our security means too [;)]

Well, I had my ISP check into this & they couldn't offer any suggestions other than what's already been done. Would it be possible for Matrix to mirror the updates on another site in the same manner that SPWAW is? [&o] Otherwise, I could probably find some kind soul out there to burn the updates & mail them to me.
