We won't be seeing this raid repeated often. While my losses of Vals were exceedingly heavy it is also true that the loss of 8 B17s, representing a fortnight's delivery to the theatre, cannot be borne for long. Again we see the massive difference in performance between the Mike and unarmoured Rufes and Zeroes. The Mike is only damaged by fire which downs Zeroes and Rufes and thus saves many of my pilots' lives.

Not a good day to be an Allied bomber pilot. 64 sortie, 10 are downed short of the ships and those which do not turn back make their bomb runs with more attention to survival than accuracy. My air force would never graduate such pilots. Bomber pilots' only worth is in delivering bombs to targets. Their survival is only important insofar as the longer they live the more experienced they are and the more likely they are to hit.

I REALLY thought I was going to suffer serious losses here. This is my 2nd-best ASW TF and so it would be one of those few irreplaceable forces whose loss I wouldn't be able to absorb. So far while Jagdfluger is managing to inflict losses they are all in eminently replaceable areas.

RE: Carrier Battle off Karachi !

Post by Nemo121 »

Andy,

Oh there's a HUGE difference between fighting and taking something the enemy tries to hold and taking something the enemy abandons [8D]. I want to draw the enemy East as much as possible. Once India falls I will collect on this plan, which I've had even while we were playing. It may not work but that's why we play after all. Shanghai is ueber-safe [:D]. I have about 1200 AV at every urban base in China x 4 ( urban defence modifier) x 2-3 ( forts) = 9,000 to 12,000 AV.

The Chinese have had trouble mustering even 2,000 AV nevermind 9,000. Even throughout my retreat I had formed reserves of over 3,000 AV which I could have used but that wouldn't have conformed to the plan of drawing him east.

As to India. No, he will hold at Bhopal. He will retreat in the south but he will hold at Bhopal and at Ahmadabad. Others would do differently but this is the way Jagdfluger will do it.

Good results from the initial strike. I was surprised to see the AS there. This leads me to believe that Jagdfluger really saw this invasion of Toyohara/Shikula as being decisive. Well, I managed to prevent that. All that remains now is turning the tables and picking the low hanging fruit myself for a change.

I just do NOT understand why Jagdfluger is accepting such continual, unfavourable attrition! When he gets kills they are almost always due to his FlAK. His fighters are scoring at best 1 kill for every 5 they lose since the introduction of the Mikes. I know attrition is felt to be the Americans' friend but at a 5:1 ratio it really is not at all favourable.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/21/42

If I disband a group which arrived with only 1 or 2 planes ( because I didn't have enough planes in the pool to outfit it fully ) and then ensure I have enough planes to outfit it properly in 90 days time when it re-appears will it re-appear with 27 pilots of the right experience? The answer to this question will have important ramifications for my pilot training programmes.

I have a bad feeling that this change in the last patch is crucifying me as Japan in another game. I think those pilots are gone forever. You can't tell, but pools don't go up, and pilots you draw into these sub-strength units are at whatever level you have from the pools.

If you disband, I am sure that the squadron comes back as a reformed squadron, i.e at pool experience.

I would have thought that the squadron should arrive with it's full strength of pilots sans aircraft. Thus you get experienced pilots to disband into other squadrons or wait to rebuild the one they are in.

The only way around it is to ensure that the pools of aircraft are always sufficient to allow full replacement squadron drawdowns.

Bloody hard to do!

Monter,
Well, when put up against top-line enemy fighters they are pretty useless. Don't forget that their kills on the 23rd were pretty much all of enemy transports and patrol types... which aren't particularly known for being difficult to shoot down.

bbbf,
Amen to that.

RE: Carrier Battle off Karachi !

Post by Andy Mac »

My understanding is that if you Withdraw the sqn the pilots stay with the sqn so a sqn with 25 x 80xp pilots if withdrawn will re appear with 25 x 80xp pilots.

If the same sqn is disbanded then the 25 x 80xp pilots go to the sqn you disband it into and when the original sqn is reformed it appears with NO pilots and you need to fill it up from your pool.

Only designated reinforcement sqns appear with pilots based on the pool xp

i.e. a new sqn with no special designated xp levle will appear with 45xp pilots in 44 a formerly disbanded sqn does not get these free pilots

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/26/42

I should point out, at this stage, that Jagdfluger and I have been having a lot of discussions about the Shock Attack + Pursue model. I get the feeling that he is pretty shocked by his force losses following forced retreats but, hey, this is a no-holds barred game. Another interesting bit of information is that it looks like Andy used PP to transfer two West Coast divisions to Aden as we initially thought there was a bug whereby two US divisions had shown up in Aden instead of the US.

As compensation for having to get info on that topic (in order to outrule it being a bug) I answered Jagdfluger's question about my tank forces... I told him that I did have four extempore tank divisions through the combination of Tank brigades and tank regiments into ad hoc tank divisions and that two of those divisions were operating in India. What I didn't tell him is that instead of each division being 200 AV each division is 400 to 450 AV so he now thinks that the two ad hoc divisions are heading for Bhopal with two more being in Korea/China when, in fact, one division is making the drive to Bhopal while the other, along with several infantry divisions, is making for Ahmadabad.

Those of you familiar with Operation Bagration will notice that I am a big fan of it and am very much following what the Soviets did by varying the direction and weight of my thrusts such that the enemy reserves continuously end up in less then essential sectors and fall foul of Clausewitz's saying, "Order, counter-order, disorder".

Aye but what has allowed to Shock Attack + Pursue isn't the armour, it is the fact that I'm doing it on a railway line. Even infantry moves 90 miles on a railway line per day and so can Shock Attack + Pursue. So, this isn't something to do with armour although I have allowed my armour to advance ahead of my infantry ( by halting my infantry for a day) since it served my purposes to force Jagdfluger to concentrate on the obvious thread to Bhopal as a means of distracting him from Ahmadabad.

In any case your points about armour were about later in 1942 and 43. At this stage of the game the Japanese have NO additional armour and what has been achieved has been achieved by the application of 2000+ infantry AV and 400 AV of armour along one axis. Even along the Nagpur/Bhopal axis the armour accounted for less than 20% of the force. Sorry but I think your assessment is flawed Andy. The real flaw isn't the Japanese having too much armour ( since they have no additional armour and I'm only using a portion of what they have along this axis) the flaw is, IMO, the entire Shock Attack+ Pursue model which makes ground attacks too "all or nothing".

Ha, I wish. Nah, with P51s appearing in September 42 and carrier-borne Corsairs from January 1943 my ability to launch any major attacks with those tank divisions in 43/44 will be minimal. OTOH a tank division on an atoll should be pretty frightening and there are lots of places I can go that Allied carriers can't touch ;) if India goes well... Burma, China, Soviet Union, Australia etc.

Very interesting. Not only are there US troops at Shikula but also large portions of several Soviet divisions. Weird. I wonder what the plan was here?

ORIGINAL: Andy Mac

Yep, which means that these squadrons we get, with less than full TOE but with trained pilots to match the airframes are costing Japan critical trained pilots (and the US, though it hurts them less over time).

I will have to have a go at seeing what happens to confirm, but if what I think is going on is right, they should change it.

bbbf,

Allied reinforcement squadrons do NOT draw down from the Allied pilot or airframe pool. So if the Allies don't have enough airframes they still get the full-strength squadron. So, this only hurts Japan.

Unfortunately I managed to write over the turn of 28th February so what I will do is just give a summary of the current status of the war relative to the situation at the end of January. It makes, IMO, interesting reading.

Status Report, 28th February 1942.

Overall the critical situation on the northern flank has been stabilised with sufficient forces at Toyohara to hold against any likely Allied attack and sufficient forces ( over 600 AV ) freed from the front to enable a quick riposte against the other Soviet and Allied bases in the Aleutians and coastal Soviet Union.

The defences in Hawaii and surrounding bases are being slowly but surely built up and, if necessary, KB can sprint down to stabilise any situation there while a, hopefully, enticing trap has been prepared for the Allies in the South Pacific.

In India the Allied front has been breached precisely as planned and with a new OMG driving in the north with a view to dislocating the enemy's entire defensive line a precipitous retreat is almost guaranteed. My next major thrust will occur in the south and, to that aim, I am planning to land 1 division and 3 Brigades at Vizangapatam the day after I capture it. to double the strength of the southern thrust and enable it to quickly over-run the defences around Calcutta and Asansol.

So, all in all, it is going well although, losses have, as always, been heavy. My hope is that with events in India settled I will quickly be able to settle affairs in Burma and can then turn my attention towards China, the Soviet Union and building up my defences on the Pacific.

So, let's look at how things have changed in the past month.

Firstly the score has remained relatively constant. While the Allies have gained 2,500 points Japanese forces have gained 7,800 points. Obviously this game isn't being decided on points but it is still a valid point of comparison to give a rough idea how things are going.

In the air the Allies have lost an additional 1,637 planes while Japan has lost 1,329. What these bald figures, which seem highly favourable to the Allies, fail to reveal is that with almost 500 of the Japanese losses occuring on the ground and a large amount of the rest occurring due to either ops losses or defensive A2A combat over my own airfields my own pilot losses have actually been quite light. There is a squeeze on my bomber production at the moment as I am waiting for sufficient Me-264s to re-equip my premier bomber units but I expect to be able to produce 120 Me 264s a month whilst only requiring 30 or so to replace losses thus allowing the conversion of 3 Sentai per month which will ease the strain on my Ki-32s, Lillys and Sallys.

On the shipping front 116 Allied ships and 28 Japanese ships have been sunk. The majority of Japanese ships were sunk by Soviet submarines which have proven surprisingly effective in the post month, one reason I was so eager to destroy the AS docked at a Soviet port, while most of the Allies ships were destroyed by KB and my land-based Jeans and Kates. The most significant losses this month were of two American BBs and the Mutsu in the waters off Shikula. Apart from these BBs and a few Americans DMS and DD almost all of the losses were of garden variety APs, AKs and TKs. Obviously the Americans have a huge reserve of these ship types but even with their deep pockets this rate of loss is not sustainable and will limit the strength and/or rate of their advances in 1944 and 1945.

In terms of production Japan has lost almost 2,000 resources in the past month and a little HI due to the surrendering of most of China without a fight. That's OK though as the capture of India and the re-stabilisation of the situation in China will soon set things right + the Soviet Union is a huge source of resources and HI if they can be taken relatively intact.

Damn, painful shipping losses here. Fortunately most of the bomb hits were only 100 Kg bombs but, even still, at least a score of transports are out of action for a few months or sunk.

It allows you to really react in all directions from a central position and really cuts down on ops losses and fatigue from continual rebasing. In other news I have just converted my 2nd sentai of bombers to Me 264s.

Madoien is proving a tough nut. I had really expected the Allies to run out of supplies extremely quickly in this pocket but they seem to have supplies to burn... and a lot of AAA. I will be able to solve this problem quickly by bringing Me-264s to bear but, for right now, they are just too limited a resource and more useful in keeping Shikula beaten down. On a sidenote I can already see the effect of the increased durability and armour of the Me-264s reflected in my pilot experience. All of the previously converted Me 264 units have experience of over 80 even with the addition of 60 Exp pilots to replace their losses.

This looks good for the Allies but, in reality, it is just a case of Jagdfluger delaying at Bhopal while I work around the northern and southern flanks. He'll be abandoning Bhopal in the next couple of days unless I'm very mistaken. It also looks like he has abandoned Karachi as my recon missions show only a single unit at Karachi. Now is the moment that I will begin to dilute my forces and spread them out in order to either force the defence to also spread out ( unlikely) or to just hunker down in a single base and try to ride out a siege after their ability to run to the Burmese border has been removed.

If I were in Jagdfluger's position right now I would be running for the Burmese border at full speed and desperately trying to link my Soviet and Chinese forces so that the Chinese could draw down on Soviet supplies whilst the British Indian Army tried to make it through Burma and down into China/Malaysia. It is unlikely to work if enacted at the moment but, if put into motion a week ago, I think it would be the correct strategic solution to this, unenviable, problem.
