Where we stand: the Dodgers lead the majors in team BA (.285) and ERA (3.19). Warren Spahn has come off the DL, but still needs a couple of days before he can return to the rotation. Barring any further injuries, we seem to be in a good position for continuing our pennant run. However, the Giants are standing over our shoulders, so we can take nothing for granted.

In the minors, we have a couple of excellent prospects. In AAA, 2B Eddie Miksis is .324/2/22. In AA, P Dan Bankhead is 2-0, 2.36.

Trade rumor: I shopped P Vic Lombardi to other teams, and I received an astounding offer from the GM of the Red Sox. He offered Ted Williams. This made me sit back and think. This is a developing story.

Trade news: in further talks with the Red Sox, I got Williams, but the price was negotiated down to P Erv Palica. Yes, you read that correctly. The Sox were thrilled with the deal, and I nearly collapsed in my chair.

We immediately contacted Williams and signed him to a 2 yr extension @$68,551.

The Dodgers everyday lineup now looks like this:

1B Jackie Robinson .289/5/37
SS Pee Wee Reese .293/3/35
C Gil Hodges .325/8/45
LF Ted Williams .276/10/42
RF Buddy Lewis .305/2/34
CF Duke Snider .237/5/31
3B George Kell .305/2/33
2B Red Schoendienst .234/2/26

Trade offer: the Cubs expressed interest in Del Ennis. I listened to their offers, and politely declined. At this point, I'd only accept a top-notch reliever.

As of August 1, the power hitting of the Giants is keeping them right behind the pitching and speed of the Dodgers. The Giants are far and away the leading HR-hitting team, with 121. The Dodgers lead the majors in shutouts (14), complete games (45), runs scored per game (5.22) and stolen bases (79).

Our lineup and starting rotation are very good, but the overriding weakness is our barely-adequate bullpen. If a starter falters, we proceed on a wing and a prayer.

Another potential FA is Bob Feller, who is 13-13, 3.93. I AM eyeing this guy.
