USN BB Float Planes (4/2/23)
USN BB Float Planes (4/2/23)
As 1923 goes on, American battleships are starting to get upgraded to receive float plane squadrons. While not to terribly useful with 3-day turns, those tiny aircraft can nevertheless provide some intelligence.
So far only BB Maryland and BB Nevada can accept them; Maryland has 2 and I still need to ship the proper squadron to Nevada.
Next month Tennessee becomes eligible for an upgrade.
Because I lost California and Oklahoma, I am going to have a surplus of 2 float plane squadrons, once I load New Mexico, Idaho, Mississippi, Arizona, and Pennsylvania in the next 10 months. That's not bad, considering that if both float planes in a squadron get shot down at the same time, the entire squadron is disbanded - and a good torpedo hit will do that to you.
I wonder if I can split the blimp squadron into two 2-blimp units and mount those on Nevada and Maryland instead... ^_^

Aircraft losses (4/2/23)
Aircraft losses (4/2/23)
At this stage both sides are building up inventories of aircraft at an alarming rate - it makes me long for a good air-to-air battle. Perhaps if I could just get planes into China or Korea...
Current totals for losses by type:
Lost on the ground: 41 (+2 since December)
Operations: 27 (+10 since December)
Flak: 14 (+4 since December)

US divisions supply status (4/5/23)
US divisions supply status (4/5/23)
Here's a two-month follow-up on shortages in US Army divisions' orders of battle. I only included units not in full strength or of unknown status:
US division: shortage of infantry squads / shortage of 37mm guns / shortage of light tanks
1st Division: 0 / 19 / 11
2nd Division: 0 / 24 / 15
3rd Division: 0 / 13 / 0
4th Division: 8 / N/A / 0
5th Division: No data due to being split in three regiments
21st Cavalry Division : No data due to being split in three regiments
Hawaiian Division : No data due to being split in three regiments
2nd Marine Brigade: N/A / 6 / N/A
35th Regiment: 0 / 12 / N/A
159th Regiment: 15 / 0 / N/A
*20 squads have been added
184th Regiment: 30 / 0 / N/A
*9 squads, 2 guns have been added
It is very interesting that all the remaining US divisions in reinforcement queue keep using 75mm guns rather than 37mm; this should help with resupplying early-campaign divisions.

Heavy armament comparison (4/8/23)
Here's the rundown on how many high caliber guns each fleet has at the moment:

8 Nagato
8 Mutsu
14" guns - 36
12 Ise
12 Hyuga

12 Tennesee

12 Mississippi

10 Nevada
10 New York
10 Texas

4 Illinois
4 Oregon

4 Connecticut
4 Georgia
4 Rhode Island
4 Nebraska
4 Minnesota
4 Ohio
4 Maine
10" guns - 16
4 Monandock
4 Charlotte
4 Missoula
4 Seattle
Total number of high-caliber barrels: 162.
With addition of older battleships, USN appears to be matching IJN in firepower. Of course, that's not a fair comparison - IJN's 16" guns remain very much a severe threat to any Allied vessel. Only in the middle of 1925 will USN finally achieve parity there - meaning I have to keep Maryland afloat at all costs until then.

More and more American submarines are pulled off the front lines to deal with growing operational and ASW damage.
Currently 10 hulks are being patched up in Seattle, main USN submarine repair hub.

Allied Aircraft Experience (5/2/23)
Allied Aircraft Experience (5/2/23)
Continuous spotting of Japanese transports and warships in North Luzon is paying off in terms of increasing experience for Allied pilots.
Unfortunately, Japanese anti-aircraft gunners are getting better at their jobs as well - one of my air squadrons is down to 52 morale, which pretty much means I have to give them a month of vacation.

Repairs are finally complete on DD Kane. Back on 10/22/22, it crawled back to Shanghai with 99 system and 84 flotation damage. Amazingly, it survived.
Note the daytime experience - 73, one of the highest values for USN destroyer fleet.

USN is showing a slight edge over IJN - however Japanese 16" guns on Nagato and Mutsu still pose a major threat.
Numerous Japanese AMCs pose a severe danger as well - with virtually all of Asiatic Fleet wiped out they can engage in unrestricted mine warfare as well as provide first and second wave cannon fodder for IJN dreadnought fleet.
Two American ships are barely holding on to their life - so far they are included in the numbers above. Three had to be scuttled - they are not.

Case Study: CA Huron (5/5/23)
Case Study: CA Huron (5/5/23)
There is no way to undermine what this old cruiser was able to do: for several rounds, it stood alone against the entire IJN dreadnought lineup, firing its 3" shells nonstop.
I have never seen a ship take so much abuse, and survive (the fact that IJN ships were down to 8cm ammo will be overlooked).
I have never seen a ship spend so much of its ammo (it never showed its back to the enemy - the rear guns didn't engage).
The 22 experience points it got for this battle are well-deserved. Welcome to the 2nd USN ship to achieve 99 daytime experience!

Top Pilots (5/17/23)
Here are top Allied pilots of the war so far.
Air-to-air combat is so rare in WPO, that it was a real pleasure to see these dogfights. Nevermind the fact that USN planes achieved victories purely by outmassing opponents on the battlefield.
The first kill of the game was that from a... bomber. Go figure

The battle for Hungnam (5/7/23 - 5/23/23)
Here's a quick recap of assault values at Hungnam - I am curious as to whether all my guns are doing anything at all:
Date: IJA AV / USA AV
5/5/23: 878 / 1155
5/6/23: 877 / 1156
5/7/23: 876 / 1158
5/8/23: 870 / 1160
5/9/23: 873 / 1159 *21st USA CD arrives
5/10/23: 873 / 1339
5/11/23: 871 / 1338
5/12/23: 871 / 1338
5/13/23: 874 / 1340
5/14/23: 862 / 1343
5/15/23: 854 / 1346
5/16/23: 850 / 1351
5/17/23: 847 / 1354
5/18/23: 846 / 1761 *6th USA ID arrives
5/19/23: 839 / 1763
5/20/23: 821 / 1764
5/21/23: 797 / 1768 *IJA base forces leave
5/22/23: 799 / 1768
Trench warfare can be a real drag - thousands of shells flying around, all for little to no effect. This makes me wonder, if it's time to outflank the Korean IJA army group. I know there are 3 to 4 divisions farther north, but they have not seem to move from Peking suburbs for quite some time, perhaps I can sneak right under them? Of course, I could keep on bombarding.

Some may I say I killed off 4 dozen of those flush-deckers in the last month alone just so that I can manage the rest of them better...

IJN DD Survey (5/23/23)
Here's what I am showing for the current lineup of IJN destroyers:
53cm torpedoes / ASW capability:
#3
#10
Keyaki
Kiku
Kuri
Maki
Momi
Sumire
Tsuta
45cm torpedoes / ASW capability:
Amatsukaze
Kaede
Kashi
Tanikaze
Yanagi
45 cm torpedoes / no ASW
25 destroyers of Asakaze class
So, the question remains: is IJN upgrading its Asakaze destroyers to Minesweepers for a moderate gain of firepower but loss of torpedoes in July?

Do leaders get experience?
To summarize thorough research involving some of my most battle-scarred land, sea, and air commanders, they do not, even if their units max out on experience themselves.
