Good Guy,
Thanks for the info. I followed up by going on into the HP PC area and using all available information it looks like the issue I am having relates to issues with the video card and it looks like a no fix from their end. I just do not feel like going through your very good suggestions to have some success in playing this game. I am going to chalk this up to next time I choose a computer I will be more dilligent in checking all of the video cards and graphics. For now I can still live with the original Highway to thr Reich which is still agood game using the Bulge concept.

Thanks again, Butch rstockland@fuse.net

Dave,
Just left a reply to Good Guy and you will see that he has probably discovered the source of my consternation. It is not the game but more my video card/graphics. Sorry to put you and your experts through the agitation but I really appreciate the effort. I will be more careful in my evaluating games and checking with my computer video card/graphics. I still will enjoy playing my Highway to the Reich.

Thanks again for your efforts, Butch rstockland@fuse.net

Ok Butch,

you can hack the registry, if you want. After making changes to the registry entry, Windows 7 will allow you to use a font size of 90% or 80% of the default size (which should be 96 dpi), but you'd have to set this manually in the registry every time you would want to switch to a smaller (than 100%) font.

http://superuser.com/questions/80151/ho ... -windows-7

If you don't feel comfortable tinkering with the registry file, you can automate this and have 2 registry scripts change the settings from say 100% to 90% and back:

Open the windows editor (notepad), and copy and paste the following text (without "quote"). Save each part to a separate file on your desktop and name it accordingly (see below), but make sure you save each with the .reg extension (say "86dpi.reg").

"86dpi.reg"
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\Software\Fonts]
"LogPixels"=dword:00000056

"dpi96.reg" :
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\Software\Fonts]
"LogPixels"=dword:00000060

If that works partially only (or not at all), you also have to change the value in your user profile, so you'll need 2 more batch files:

"dpi86user.reg":
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"LogPixels"=dword:00000056

To switch back you'll need file number 4, "dpi96user.reg"
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"LogPixels"=dword:00000060

Then just double click on the corresponding REG files.

These scripts should work. Pls give me some feedback, thnx.[/b]

If 90% (86 dpi) is still too big, you can go to 80% and replace all entries with "56" with "4c" (means: 0000004c)

You have to REBOOT for the settings to take effect.

GoodGuy,
Tried the first attempt at hacking the registry which was no problem. Of couse after rebooting at both 86 and 76 there was no change in the issue I have been having. I know that the application worked because I tried another game and the size font was much smaller to the point of having to look twice at the screen or having another eye test. I will probably not do the second set up because there does not seem to be a way to allow the wording to appear on the sidebar even with an actual change of font dpi percentage.
Thanks for your effort...

Did you edit both values in the registry, means under "Current config" AND "CURRENT user" ?

Erm, just to make sure:
4. Display: Right-click on the Desktop, select Personalize, then Display. (OR Start Menu, Control Panel, Display.) From the 3 settings: Small, Medium, Large, if screen defaults to Medium (125% size for font and images) and that’s too large, use Small for 100% size (aka “normal”)

It's set to "small", right?

Another idea: Are you using a special/odd windows theme? If so try changing back to the default theme.

GoodGuy,
Yes I did both the current config and current user at both 86 and 76 %. I also checked again to be sure the display was smaller which it was. Have not changed any of the original windows theme. I do have the Hp TouchSmart desktop PC but I doubt that would be a concrn for my issue.

Can you make a screenshot of the game window and attach it to your post here (open the game, hit the PRINT screen, then open MS Paint, paste the screen in Paint, then save as JPG and upload here), I'd like to see what it looks like.

On that HP you should see the "Intel ® Graphics and Media Control Panel" in the task bar. It came with my netbook which has an Intel HD chipset, so it should be on your system, too.

Looks like this, once opened:

Is there any setting dealing with font sizes?

Go to the Intel website and obtain the newest driver from their site, please.

GoodGuy,
Have already been to the Intel website and using their diagnostic search of my system their conclusion is that I have the most up to date driver I did a screen capture of the game screen and if you look on the left hand side you will see that the issue is there because all printing is outside of the area.
This has been the problem with part of the info being cut off.

PLEASE, be so kind and download and install the most recent driver from THEIR website, ok?
So we can rule out a borked video driver or tinkering with Intel drivers on the part of HP.
Same driver versions won't guarantee that the drivers remained unchanged (by the PC supplier).

Please make sure Windows 7 Basic Theme is selected, then make a screenshot of the "Window Color and Appearance" tab, with "window text" selected in the pull-down menu, then post it here (pls check "embed picture in post").

The default font should be Segoe UI, if I am not mistaken, what font do you've got selected there?
With MS Sans Serif, for example, quite some letters' width is a bit larger.

There may be an easier solution to it than we might think.

Dave could give some info about what font the game is pulling (a font stored within the game's folder or the system's default font) there.

The font on your screenshot looks a little bit different than the one in say COTA or HTTR on my PC, resembling the slight differences between say Arial and Helvetica.
So, in case the game pulls a system font, checking the Appearance dialog and changing the font may be worth a try. Remember the font size for each item (window text, message text, etc.) and then pick a smaller font size, in case nothing changed ingame. You have to restart the game after each change in the appearance dialogue.

A last resort could be to replace the font file.
But for that Dave would have to tell you whether the game pulls system fonts or not.

If you try all of these suggestions above and if there's still no change, then I'd say I give up.

By the way, you should uninstall the current drivers before installing the ones from the Intel site. This often solves issues already, as you get rid of mixed driver versions this way, well IF the uninstall routine is programmed properly. There is a NVIDIA removal tool out there, so Intel might provide a similar tool, google and see if there is one, if not just uninstall, then reboot, skip the "found new hardware" (in case it comes up) window and install the new drivers.

PS: I edited post #50, so pls re-read to see changes

GoodGuy,
I think the problem exists in the HP driver. I ran another search using Inte and the response I receivied was a customizied computer manufacturer driver is installed on my computer. Intel could not update the driver and warning of a creation of technical problems. They suggest going to the computer manufacture which I did. The HP company has no such driver in there system. They suggest going to Intel. Another lesson learned in that I think HP took a driver from Intel and created a driver for my computer and then forgot about any problems happening.
I tried the other idea on the Windows color and font which I did change to a smaller size but there was no effect after restarting. I did have the proper font nams. I AM TAKING YOUR ADVICE AND I AM GIVING UP. Ijust can't devote this much time to the game. I have grandchildren to play with and they don't understand about computers at ages of six and four.
Thanks again for your help as your knowledge is superior.

Butch,

you're welcome.

But I really recommend to get rid of this driver.
All manufacturers have a download section, Intel has one too.
Remove your current customized driver MANUALLY (Start button ->Control Panel ->Programs ->Programs and features , select your Intel Drivers and hit uninstall) and then find and download the drivers for your video chip. I can't provide you a link, since you didn't tell me what model/chip you have. Just don't use their install helper/wizard !

Once you've installed either an older version or the most recent version FROM intel MANUALLY, the game might play fine.
