Simultaneously, German aircraft strike at Smolensk. So we have three big air attacks this turn: Leningrad, Smolensk, and Kiev. The air strikes will usher in three desperate land attacks.

The Soviets, also in a final-turn mindset, send up their fighters to contest all three sets of air strikes.

Outnumbered over Leningrad, the Soviet interceptors do nothing to stop the bombers, and the Stukas scream toward their targets. This flight of Stukas is attacking enemy aircraft on the ground. But the Stuka pilots strain to see anything in the driving snow, and they roll high.

The Stukas fail to do any significant damage.

The German air strike on Kiev is more successful.

RE: Plans in Flames: A Barbarossa AAR.
But the subsequent German ground assault on Kiev fails, as does the assault on Leningrad. The Germans do succeed in taking Smolensk, but it's far too little, far too late. My caution doomed the Germans early on. The German commander has to keep pushing aggressively, and I didn't.
Here's the final victory screen: a decisive win for the Soviets. The historical result is something like 21-22 points apiece. My Germans didn't come close. Even if they'd managed to take Leningrad and Kiev (both of which count double in this scenario), they'd have fallen far short.

A few closing thoughts. This scenario took me about 12-15 hours to play. It would have been quicker had I not been editing photos for this AAR. Also, I still spend a lot of time consulting the documentation. Newbs: F1, F2 and F3 are your friends. F1 and F2 are the two halves of the player's manual, which contains a lot of strategy advice; it helps you understand the rationale behind the rules, and the tradeoffs of decisions. F3, the Rules as Coded, is best when you just need to know what the rule is.
Anyway, thanks for reading! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Great job posting and doing the AAR. Thanks for taking the time to do it.

I agree, well done indeed. With every AAR and demo I learn a little bit more.

Thanks Grotius for the AAR, really looking forward to this.
If you are playing with dual monitors, is it possible to have the player manual/rules open on the other monitor as you play?
Cheers,

Great, thanks for the clarification.
Since I posted this I also read the WOW thread and saw that it was possible for the forms etc...still trying to digest all of that but now looking to set up a third monitor.
I already have two, so why not stretch it? After all, I bought a house with a fourth bedroom once specifically to be able to set up the board version (Ed 5 with all add-ons), so a third monitor is no biggie...
Cheers,

does the Barbarossa scenario still include something about the ARM units in the victory conditions?
I think I am remembering an older version?

Must be an older version. Victory conditions for Barbarossa are purely based on objective cities, with some of them counting double (as shown in Grotius' screenshot.ORIGINAL: brian brian

A good option for you for A3R is there is a scenerio developed for The Operational Art of War III that recreated A3R
There is another option, my Advanced Third Reich mod for Strategic Command Global Conflict GOLD, pretty faithful to the boardgame and has a fully capable Axis and Allied AI scripted. Whenever SC3 gets up and running, I plan to start work on another version of this. If my plans to fall into Flames, haha... In the meantime, onward with MWiF!

Grotius,
