Good night,

I have just resigned in my game against Joch, he mopped the ground with my overconfidence. Specially in my rearguard and line of supplies. I made gross mistakes  and he took advantage of them with a magnificent skill, I would like to congrant him and deserve all the luck in the next round ;)

I had a lot of fun within this tournament, count on me for the next one.

Thank you!

Congratulations to beamslam for a well deserved Soviet win.
The final score is 1448 (Axis) vs 1950 (Soviet) resulting in a Soviet Minor Victory.

I did better than last time, but still made a few mistakes.
This time I was not able to take Novorossiysk early, so there was limited chance to cut it off from Naval supply during the rainy season. Beamslam did a great job, to fortify it and to distract my forces with a few counterattacks, I was really struggling to get enough combat power to attack.
Also, while I did well in developing my rail-network, suppy remained a major issue though. I located my Air Transport Group in Armavir and used the Depot in Beloretschenskaya as a air supply hub. This worked ok to resupply the Frontline around Novorossiysk, but I could have probably stayed at Kerch with the same or better effect.

Also, I did not use my airforce too well. Mainly in Ground Support role, but I should have used more interdiction and of course port attack to destroy the infrasturcture and to lower the supply of Novorossiysk. The Naval interdiction only worked at the beginning, when I switch the KGr100 Loadout to Mines. Later on, they were to weak for any good results.

On the bright side, this time, I was lucky to capture Grozny at the very last turn. :D

In summary, this is a nice scenario, the mud turns are really a supply and combat value nightmare, so the Axis has to move quickly. I managed to encircle and destroy more units then in the first round of the tournament, however, still a strong soviet force remained.

Generally I think the scenario is quite balanced if you pay attention to the minor details.
Against a good Soviet player, this is quite hard to win as Axis.

@beamslam
Thanks again for a great game. Good luck for the next round.

Cheers
Terry

Thank you terry1040 for a exiting and very tense match, only decided in the very last turn!

My army was demolished two times, first in the initial onslaught where the greater part of the units was surrounded and defeated. Later, after forming the Transcausian Front, it too was largely demolished. Made the mistake to form it too far West. Intended to better cooperate with the North Caucasus Front. My few recon planes failed to discover the Panzers moving toward my right flank, and soon they were cutting the divisions off and trapping them. At that time I thought I had it and it was over. And was desperately looking for the skies for rain!

As terry mention, may plan at the North Caucasus Front was to delay and fix as many axis forces as possible, and attack or threaten to attack where ever possible. The partly isolated forces at the Taman Peninsula were withdrawn into the Novorossiysk fortress, and the rest shipped to other fronts by ships. Was worried that the naval bombers should cut off the sea connection to the fortress but the threat diminished eventually.

The last part of the campaign in east Caucasus was fought in rain and mud, largely to my advantage, but had supply problems as well. Somehow managed to put up a defensive line, and with the aid of the mud slowly able to slowing down the panzers. Except for the Axis assault on Grozny in the last turn, which took the city.

Thanks again terry1040 for the match.

Thanks for the kind words, it was a fun game. Having played the first round as Russian also, I avoided the same mistakes.

The 3th round between Joch1955 and me has ended.
The match: Joch1955 as Soviet and beamslam as Axis ended with the points 2508 to 1926. 0.76 to1. Soviet Minor victory.
The other match reversed, ended in a major Soviet victory. (have not the exact numbers)

As German, I struggled supplying both my offensive directions. The storming of the Novorossiysk fortress was much delayed. Perhaps too much delayed. Took the fortress after a prolonged bombing campaign but it did held up many units too long which were needed elsewhere.

As Soviet in the other match, it feels like Barbarossa in 41, save the units to fight another day, and fortify the key points.

Thankyou Joch for both matches!

I downloaded the end game saves for the Joch1955 vs beamslam games and found the following results:

beamslam German 1238 vs Joch1955 Soviet 1723
beamslam Soviet 2272 vs Joch1955 German 692

beamslam 3510 vs Joch1955 2415

Congratulations to beamslam for his victory. I want to mention that both German players could have scored 100 points for the Mt. Elbrus event had they wanted to. It's worth checking the manual for that event as that 100 points can come in handy. The game is balanced so that the Axis player needs to do better than the Germans did and take Grozny and Ordzhonikidze. beamslam was 3 hexes short of taking Grozny. Had he done so (and scored the Mt. Elbrus points), he would have just barely exceeded the Soviet points. Only a few players have managed an outright German victory. That makes this a good scenario for a two game match.

In the other match, 821Bobo resigned versus K62. K62 was ahead after the first few turns and 821Bobo, having both a new job and a new girlfriend, didn't have the time to complete the games. Congratulations to K62 on his victory.

So the championship match will be between K62 and beamslam. The 3rd place match will be between Joch1955 and 821Bobo, assuming 821Bobo has the time for the games. We are going to wait to start the final round until the 1.02.52 official version is released, which we expect will happen next week. The 1.02.52 official version has one data fix not included in the 1.02.52 beta version (the fix for aircraft effect that impacts interdiction). We'll let you know next week if something changes, but expect that the final round will start by the end of next week. We're thinking of ending the final round in the middle of May.. Hopefully 821Bobo will have time to participate.

Congratulations again to beamslam and K62 for reaching the championship game.

It was a fun match and playing both games at the same time was very doable.

Congrats to Beamslam and best of luck on the next round.

Thank you also to Joel and the rest of the gang for organizing the tournament.

Thanks Joel,
I did try to climp the Elbrus and claim the points but for some reason the first expedition couldn't find the mountain! It was a Romanian Cav brig. So instead a nearby Gebirgsjeager brig was dispatched, but they too failed to find the mountain as the points didnt manifest. In the previous matches the point was cashed in as soon as a unit came in the area of Mt. Elbrus. So thought there was a change in the last update. Will search the manual, as it is embarrassing that my elite mountaineers fail to find this famous mountain.

Its fine for me to wait for the next patch update.

re: round 4

For RL reasons, I will not have access to my computer for another 2 weeks, but should not have a problem meeting the May 24 deadline.

Please send me PM when you will be back online so we can arrange the match. My time schedule is still very tight.
