RE: 1 Jan 1942 Brief
Sir,
With the exception of the fall of Medano and Cagayan it was a quiet day.
Central Pacific:
Airbase construction continues at Tarawa. Due to a lack of escort vessels the occupation of Baker Island must be put on hold for now. When the correct escorts become available the operation will resume.
South Pacific
The First Carrier Striking force is almost to Truk for resupply and the detachment of the Kaga for a refit (SYS Dam 11, never been hit and only flanked on the 8th) before heading back to the Central Pacific to cover the occupation of Baker island. The reserve forces not needed at AU have landed at Lunga and Kavieng, with the Admiralties and the Shortlands due to be invaded tomorrow. These landings plus the landings at Lunga will complete operation Kora-A. Overall, the operation has been a success so far.
Philippines
Our invasion troops at Medano were successful in taking the base taking 3000 prisoners in the process. The Tarakan covering force bombarded Tarakan today inflicting 400 plus losses on the defenders. Ground strikes by aircraft out of Jolo are expected at Tarakan today. The invasion force continues to gather at Jolo in preparation for the invasion. The invasion force is awaiting the arrival of the 2nd Kure SNLF and 21 NLF which are expected in 5 days.
On the Island of Luzon, everything remains static. The 38th Division was delay because of a course diversion to avoid potential submarine activity. It should arrive at Naga today and begin unloading.
On the Island of Mindanao, the 56th Brigade’s assault Cagayan was successful. All remaining defenders on Mindanao has retreated to Butuan. The 56th is in pursuit.
Malay
The 25th Army reports the general advance on Johore Bharu continues well. Army Aviation at Khota Bharu did not launch yesterday due to weather but will attempt to strike the airfields at Singapore in an effort to suppress counter strikes.
We have lost contact with the ABDA cruiser force. All units are advised to be on alert.
Burma
The 55th arrived at the same location that the 33rd was forced to retreat from. The 33rd is late in arriving however, so the 55th is planning on digging in expecting an attack from the British. Ground Strikes by both Sonias and Betties have been ordered as a further safeguard. No further advance is expected until the 33rd arrives.
China
The 23rd Army reports being struck by airstrikes in their attempt to withdraw to Canton. They continue to pull back with most forces successfully disengaging today.

The First Carrier Striking force has arrived at Truk for resupply and the Kaga detached. It will head back to the Central Pacific to port at Makin to cover the occupation of Baker island. The reserve forces not needed at AU have captured Lunga and Kavieng, and invaded the Admiralties and the Shortlands due to be invaded tomorrow. Overall, KORA-A remains a success.
Philippines
Our invasion force remains at Medano unloading supplies and engineering forces to establish use of the airfield. This force was struck by repeated air strikes from the Dutch and Australians. The 3rd Daitai was flying cap overhead and shot down 7 Martins, 1 Demon, 1 Hudson with an additional two Martins and 2 Hudson going down to flak. They managed to hit two cruisers of the covering force but no damage was inflicted. Ground strikes by aircraft out of Jolo hit Tarakan today, these will continue to soften up the area for an invasion. The invasion force continues to gather at Jolo in preparation for the invasion. The invasion force is awaiting the arrival of the 2nd Kure SNLF and 21 NLF which are expected in 4 days.
On the Island of Luzon, everything remains static. The 38th Division has begun unloading at Naga and when completely off the transports and it arrives at Manila operations will resume.
On the Island of Mindanao, the 56th Brigade’s continues to advance on Butuan.
Malay
The 25th Army reports the general advance on Johore Bharu continues well. With the lead elements of the Army arriving today. It is expected that enough elements will have arrived by tomorrow that operations to reduce this string point can begin. Army Aviation at Khota Bharu launched yesterday on the Singapore airfields. The escorts shot down two buffalos while losing 2 Lilies to the CAP. The strike destroyed 6 Blenheim IV, 4 Hudsons and two Buffalos.
We have lost contact with the ABDA cruiser force. All units are advised to be on alert.
Burma
Ground support operations were flown in support of the 55th and two Sonias were lost. However, the support was required because the 55th was attacked just like the 33rd was. However, this time the 15th Army was prepared and inflicted 500 losses on the enemy while suffering only 30 in return. No offensive operations are planned until the 33rd rejoins.

That's a good question, as we are playing 1.4. It surprised me as much as it did you. The purpose of both attacks were just to reduce forts as there were engineering regiments supporting both operations, and I was expecting the operation to take weeks. I don't know if Thanye pulled forces back or not. I do not intend to take China out, however.

Can't understand how you took Changsha and Yenen in the same day. Are you playing v1.4 or former versions ?
The only possibility I saw to explain your success was that Chinese force actually retreated before the assault. The Chinese troops starting in these bases should have been powerful enough to stop or at least resist one day to the troops you sent in.
Maybe Allied players are just too used to lose Chinese cities. I started a PBEM last month and date is now 25th Dec 1941. Home rule is that every hex of rail and road used by Japanese should be garrisonned by at 15 ASS strenght. I use Mongol Cav Div to do this but still had to keep most of the IJA Brigades and several divisions on the rear, especially before the last Cav Div arrive from Manchoukuo.
Anyway, I had 4 spare Div (and support units) and send them to Yenen to stop the factories. I attacked twice days in a row after ten days of bombing and managed to destroy one fort level on the first day but nothing on the second. I was planning to retreat... and then decided just to remain there to continue to shut down the factories. Two days later Chinese forces retired from the city and I took it !
RE: 27 Dec Brief
The rule I am using is for every 20 ASS above the garrison requirement, one hex out on the rails is considered patroled, up to a max range of three hexs. I do this because the game won't let me break down the units enough.

15th Army has requested that the 21st Division be released to commence operations in Burma. This request has been granted and Naval forces will deploy to Northern Indochina to make up the gap.
21st Div is assigned to Southern Area Army. Unless you paid the 3,000 odd PPs to transfer it (doubtful). Personally, if I was playing in non-gamey mode I would only use ground forces in Burma that were attached to Burma Area Army ...
Just an idea

Sir,
The Southern Army Commander has ordered the 21st Division to remain where it is as it is not equiped for operations in Burma. It will have to be halted and requiped before it can be sent into Burma.

As I understand the Army-Navy situation, they would offer their own plans, and did not want the Navy to get credit for doing anything well, but wanted the navy to get the blame when things went wrong. They would offen withold forces from Navy operations until they got something they wanted in return. If anyone knows more please feel free to post

Sir,
Central Pacific:
Airbase construction continues at Tarawa. The First Carrier fleet has been reassigned to support operations in the Central Pacific. With the capture of Rabaul, most operations in the South Pacific can now be successfully supported by LBA.
South Pacific
The reserve forces not needed at AU have captured the Admiralties and the Shortlands. This completes operation KORA-A which was a success. Further operations in the South Pacific are on hold until our recently occupied positions are secured.
Philippines
Our invasion force departed Medano after having unloaded supplies and engineering forces to establish use of the airfield. Due to the extensive damage suffered by the base it is estimated that the airfield will not be operational for at least a week, if not two. The Tarkan invasion force continues to gather at Jolo in preparation for the invasion. The invasion force is awaiting the arrival of the 2nd Kure SNLF and 21 NLF which are expected in 4 days. The Medano covering force will provide additional bombardment support to the Tarkan invasion.
On the Island of Luzon, everything remains static. The 38th Division continues unloading at Naga and when it arrives at Manila operations will resume. The 4th Division arrived at the outskirts of Clark Field today, However the rest of the 14th Army which was to closely follow the 4th is not expected to arrive for another 48 hours. This leaves the 4th Vunerable to the same fate that the 33rd suffered in Burma. These mistakes are unacceptable!
On the Island of Mindanao, the 56th Brigade’s continues to advance on Butuan.
Malay
The 25th Army reports the general advance on Johore Bharu continues well. Most elements of the 25th Army have arrived. Operations to reduce this string point are beginning. Army Aviation at Khota Bharu has switched operations to support of the ground advance.
We have lost contact with the ABDA cruiser force. All units are advised to be on alert.
Burma
Ground support operations were planned in support of the 55th. The 15th Army reports that the forces opposing it have withdrawn and they are awaiting the arrival of the 33rd before continuing. No offensive operations are planned until the 33rd rejoins.
China
The 11th Army reports almost being ready to drive on Hengchow, with the march expected to begin within 48 hours. The purpose of this drive is to link up with the 23rd Army and finish securing the rail line into Indochina

Sir,
Everything remains on track for current operations with the planning beginning for the start of the next phase of our advance.
Central Pacific
The carrier striking fleet remains enroute to Makin where tankers and other fleet support vessels are gathering. Nagumo’s orders are to remain at Makin unless a target of opportunity presents itself. If it does, he will sortie on short notice. In the meantime, the planned occupation of Baker Island is on schedule for early February.
South Pacific
The first group of Zero fighters arrived at Rabaul to begin flying combat air patrol. Once the airfield has be expanded to support Betties, two groups will be withdrawn from the Southern Resource Area for operations in the South Pacific. The long term planning for an invasion of Port Moresby has begun. This operation will require forces currently engaged in the Philippines, and so cannot be executed until the Philippines are secure.
Philippines/DEI
All remains on track, with the 14th Army arriving at Clark Field. Bombardment operations will commence in the morning. The 1st Kure SNLF has orders to attack the Philippine defenders at Lamon Bay. The Tarkan invasion fleet will finish assembling at Jolo within the next 24 hours and the commander reports that he will sail as soon as the fleet is assembled.
