Playing Germany in blizzard is alot of fun once your have mastered it. I have played Germany many times and now I rarly lose a korps to shattering but then again in another game, I have lost 50+ divisions in 1 turn (brilliant play by Joan).

Tips for German blizzard defence...

1. The preparation for blizzard starts as soon as you capture key cities and locations.
2. ALL Pz, motor divisions and all BATTs must be moved to the west ( these troops have no value in blizzard and must be built up to full strength for the up and comming summer offensive)
3. Group all your mountain divisions as these are your elite troops
4. Base your defence around cities that are easy to keep in supply
5. Do not create solid defence lines, only defend every 2nd hex where possible
6. Create speed humps, korps on rail hexes to counter attack advancing soviet troops
7. All withdrawals should be railed out where possible
8. Blizzard defence lines should be at least 3 hexes away from the main soviet line

These are just a few tips to survive the blizzard. As you can see a massive amount of work needs to be done well before the blizzard turns even startl. These troop movements have hindered many of my winter offensives and have stopped me at the gates of Moscow. Do not fool yourself in thinking you can capture a major city and forgo blizzard preparations. ALWAYS expect blizzard to be early!!!!

The best way to master German blizzard tactics is to play Russia. Elefantinho's is 1 person who has mastered german winter defences. In our game I only captured limited ground against him in the south, other gains were only when he decided to retreat. He countered attacked and advanced in 1 sector shattering many soviet korps in 1 of the most cunning and daring moves I have ever seen by Germany in blizzard. I think I only shattered 1 small korps in this game that had axis minor allies in it. This is 1 game I hated blizzard as Russia!!

I agree with cabron66, I have completed reading the first two volumes of Das Reich I and II and currently completing the final chapters of Das Reich III by Otto Weidinger who took part in the Battle for Moscow. A few chapters go into great detail about the fighting before Moscow and the Battle for Istra and the crossing of the river. What Weidinger mentions in his book regarding the Das Reich was the tenacity and belief of the Siberian soldiers who wouldnt take prisoners or surrender. Furthermore, the amount of replacements the division received was pitiful. Companies consisted of two squads with something like 30-40 men? They also had to deal with a lack of shelter and remember that the Germans invaded eastward and therefore the further they went the more land they had to occupy which means more troops. I conclude that fighting in -20 degrees is probably one of the most difficult things to ask no matter what side your on but for the Soviets this didnt come into ? since it was either kill or be killed.
