Allies gain initiative, no reroll allowed.

Allied impulse #1

Weather is fine everywhere except for the N. Monsoon, which has Storm.

Russia DoW against Japan.

The USSR and USA take super-combineds and all other powers take Land.

During Naval Movement, the USA moves to cover sea areas with heavier ships on the boundaries of the Japanese Empire. TRS and AMPHs are loaded in the North Sea, Italian Coast and Coral Sea.

In the Marianas, the USA successfully activates to find the Hyuga with 11 surprise. It is sunk with no Allied damage. The East Indian Ocean is likewise searched and the Japanese CA there found with 6 surprise by the American force. The Japanese CA is damaged with rolls of two 8s. An American BB is aborted. In the China Sea, the Allied fleet find with 6 surprise, and choose a SUB combat. 2 SUBs are aborted and the remaining Russian SUB chooses to remain submerged to end the combat in that sea zone, but not before destroying 2 CP and aborting 3 others.

The impulse will continue with Strat Bombing...

Continued from the Naval Step...

No Strategic Bombing is accomplished this Allied Impulse.

Russia conducts Ground Strikes against a hex NW of Katowice, Poland as well as on 2 German HQs Budapest and NW of Belgrade. Units in Southern Bulgaria and adjacent in Yugoslavia are also hit. US A/C look at hitting Antwerp and Brussels, a stack of MECH in the forest on the French-Belgium border (that's the CW), Rommel just to the SW of that, another stack just adjacent to that one, Lyons and its HQ, a hex NW of Marseilles, and a hex SE of Venice, and finally, the Terr in New Caledonia.

Germans intercept near Katowice, the forest hex on the French-Belgium border, over Rommel and the hex somewhat SW of Strasbourg. They are countered.

Near Katowice, a German FTR is destroyed and all bombers clear. Over the Ardennes, both CW LNDs clear with another German FTR destroyed. Over Rommel, SE of the forest, an American LND is destroyed while the other clears in return for a destroyed German FTR (neglected the screenshot). SW of Strasbourg a couple of hexes, both American bombers clear while another German FTR is lost.

1 of 3 units is inverted in Antwerp and 1 of 2 in Brussels. 1 of 2 are disrupted near Katowice. No units are affected in the Ardennes, except for an LND that was sitting there. 1 units was disrupted with Rommel, but is was not the HQ, just a GAR. All units were flipped near Strasbourg. The HQ and an INF in Budapest were disorganized as was Rundstedt in Yugoslavia. In Lyons, the HQ there was turned over. A MTN near Venice was turned over also as was an INF NW of Marseilles. A Yugo INF adjacent to Bulgaria was disrupted as was an INF in southern Bulgaria. Finally, the TER in New Caledonia was inverted.

To be continued with land attack declarations and related matters...

Continuing from Ground Strikes...

USA rails a CVP to San Francisco from Panama. For Land Moves, in France and Italy, units are moved forward to the front lines for subsequent attacks. Similarly for Russia, as well as a general move forward into Manchuria.

Units are debarked from ships to land in France for the Allied MPs who have units on ships. Invasions occur on Antwerp and south of Venice in Italy as well as New Caledonia (which is oos).

Attacks are declared. In France, France is attacking the hex NW of Marseilles containing an disrupted and OOS INF. The US is attacking a MOT div 2 hexes north of that as well as an OOS Lyons with a flipped HQ in it. A couple of hexes SW of Strasbourg, the US is making an attack while Antwerp is being attacked in strength by CW units. In Italy, a combined US/CW attack is undertaken just SE of Venice.

On the Russian front, an OOS and disorganized INF in SW Bulgaria is being dealt with while a cross-river attack is set against a 2 Yugoslavian MIL east of Belgrade. An ARM stack NW of Katowice is also a target as well as a MOT in Poznan.

Shore bombardment is added to the Italian attack and against Antwerp as well as on New Caledonia.

Allies sent Ground Support against all hexes to be attacked except where odds are so high as to make it irrelevant.

Germany decides to keep its air power intact for more critical/more winnable battles.

Starting with Antwerp, an Assault leads to the loss of two Axis units and a surviving INF going to the spiral with no Allied losses. SW of Strasbourg a couple of hexes SW, the result is the hex is taken with no losses on either side, 50% disrupted attacker and disrupted defender. Against Lyons, the attack is automatic taking out the HQ and a FTR stuck there. In Norway, French-controlled partisans attack a German GAR... a 2 is rolled and 3 partisans disappear.

Continuing the Land Attacks...

Next, 2 hexes NE of Marseilles, the hex is easily taken, killing the German MOT div there. NW of Marseilles, the French army attacks and automatically takes the OOS white print INF across the river without loss and with a breakthrough. Marseilles is subsequently overrun and the German SUBs forced to rebase to Genoa. Near Venice, the SS MTN is destroyed and the hex taken without issue for the Allies. Finally, the CW attacks New Caledonia in a Blitz taking out the Terr with no damage in an automatic attack.

Continuing the Land Attacks...

On the Russian Front, an attack on Poznan causes loss to the attacker of 1 and 1/2 disorganized while the German MOT is lost. Near Kotowice, in Germany, a breakthough destroys both units and has no ill effects on the Russians. At the river crossing East of Belgrade, the attack is automatic and sees the river crossed without issue for Russia, destroying the Yugoslavian MIL. Finally, in southern Bulgaria, the OOS German INF is eliminated without loss to the attackers.

Rebases by the USA and Russia are abundant, notably, a couple of CVP are dropped at Port Vila to load on CVs as needed.

Russia uses all of its INF HQ to mostly reinvert A/C. The CW does so as well with Alexander as does the US with Bradley and McArthur in Italy.

The impulse ends to continue with the Axis impulse...

Axis Impulse #2

Germany and Italy take a Land Action while Japan takes a combined.

A Japanese NAV moves into the 4-box of the Timor Sea. During Naval Moves, it is joined by a CA. The Japanese move an AMPH into the China Sea and pick up a MIL from Nagoya.

No Naval Activations are successful.

Japan rails a unit from Tsitsihar (Manchuria) to the capital, Changchun. Germany rails a unit into Turin and Nice as well as Belgrade.

For Land Movement, Japan moves its Harbin MIL from Harbin to just beside the Manchurian capital. A MECH is used to block Communist Chinese infiltrators in northern China and a MIL is debarked into Pyongyang. Germany pulls back to behind the Oder in Northern Germany and to as good a position in the Balkans as it can get. It works at doing an orderly retreat behind river lines in Western Europe and Italy.

Germany works on attacking a Partisan near Turin. It goes off without a hitch and a couple of German units will be freed up for the next impulse.

Rebases forward are done by both Axis powers.

No reorganizations are done.

I think I am going to call the game at this point... The USA has run into a rules misinterpretation as to MAR ARM Div not acting as a marine when it comes to attacking from one island to another which makes some pacific actions pointless this turn. I will be starting up a new game soon with some changes in the optional.

Some thoughts, though...

I think the allies stopped building naval units a year too early, except for cruisers. The loss af a couple of essexes and not enough fast BBs slowed them down in the pacific. As well, TRS production should have gone on longer as there was a slow down getting air assets to the pacific lare game... so those ships would have been nice. On the other hand, AMPHS were over built. Could also have used more late game CVLs to allow CVs to head to the pacific sooner, both US and CW.

I do not think I will have the French build a factory. French resources to allies mean more oil saved and oil becomes scarce late game. More BP can be lent instead.

CW game was good. Would have been nice to spare some LND for India and Burma. Naval builds have already been mentioned.

It was surprising how overwhelming Allied air power became in the last couple of years. Is that typical?

Axis tended to run out of land units to build.... CBVs will make a bit of a difference next game.

Japanese had created a PoW camp for their own soldiers in Burma later in the game. I think having the extra oil may have been worth it but uncertain. Certainly, if Russia had struck earlier those units may be better in Manchuria rather than stuck in Burma.

Looking at using limited supply optional (cp and trs to supply) next game which may change some of these choices. Burma becomes even less tenable in the long term.

Looking forward to next playthrough...

Using the board game, I played one single game to the end, as Italy (Europe only campaign for lack of room). In 1944 and 1945, my German ally and I were buried under countless waves of US and CW planes. The fact that their fighter ranges gets quite good enables them to reach nearly everywhere

The joy of staring a new game. Everything shiny, everything new, the promise of a perfect game and no mistakes made yet.

By the way, enjoyed your AAR. Thanks for do it.
