The game has been on something of a holding pattern as the two Commanders of the Euro Axis cannot agree on the next moves. I usually lean heavily on the advice of my playing partners (as the far, far more accomplished wargamer, but I am just not comfortable with what is proposed).

Ultimately we need to break the deadlock or the game will never get back underway. As I write this I have no idea what I will do but will literally just have to make it up as each phase is declared. Case Yellow-ish - blueprint for disaster - resumes......

You should do what you are comfortable with.

I bet you do. Normally in the military world a mis-mash of ideas, compromise, and fudge results in a total and utter balls-up. This has all the makings of the Allied Norwegian Campaign or the defence of France from the Allied side in the real thing.

No declarations of war or alignments.

No Port Strikes: None

Naval Movement:

Italy
Supermarina orders a fleet to sea. Composed of the modernised battleships Giulio Ceseare (Flagship: Admiral Iachino) and Conte di Cavour and supported by the cruisers Eugenio di Savoia and Duca D'Aosta, the small force head for the Italian Coast. I decline to intercept with the Allies on the basis that the task force is to remain in the sea area anyway.

The Submarines in Cape St Vincent decline to search
Iachino's force meanwhile search out enemy units, but are pounced upon by the waiting Allies....

If it'll be of any help, I'd be happy to offer an alternative perspective on the different options being considered.

Choose the 0 and 4-boxes.

Put all surprise points on increasing damage and fire away.

Thanks.

The Regia Marina are surprised by the two Dunkerques - and the Italians are further disadvantaged as Iachino gets caught in two minds as to whether to defend the convoys (which he is told he has responsibility for - in addition to being given a search and destroy mission) and Admiral Gensoul and the French take full advantage.

I chose Dunkerque first as she is (very) slightly worse than Strasbourg.

On a throw of 9 Dunkerque is aborted. What about the next hit - Dunkerque or Strasbourg?

I don't think MWiF will let you put anything on Dunkerque now it's aborted.

The Italian shooting recovers from the initial shock reasonably well. Dunkerque is straddled and aborts - although seemingly with superficial damage. Strasbourg also heads for home, but with more serious damage that will require time in the repair yard.

The Italians put the X on the CP and the D on the worst CA. Aborts on damaged cruiser first and then worst ship first and so on..

Dunkerque engages the cruisers that have been ordered by Iachino to protect the convoy. The French ship gets in amongst the Italian merchant shipping and obliterates the convoy before the cruisers can reach the scene and bring their guns to bear.

Job done, Gensoul retires, seemingly forgetting that Strasbourg is in a fight with two Italian capital ships. Although badly hit, Strasbourg forces Cesare to retire. With no convoy left to protect, the cruisers join their Flagship. Conte di Cavour's captain can only wonder what the **** that was all about.

A bad defeat for Italian arms given they out-gunned the French force.....

Ormster what do the Italians want to do (faced with 1 destroyed, 1 damaged and 2 aborted)?
The Italians put the X on the CP and the D on the worst CA. Aborts on damaged cruiser first and then worst ship first and so on.

Edit: La Spezia is the abort port.
