RE: Lunacy or Shrewdness?

Post by Capt. Harlock »

Earlier I was asked to post some information about losses.... Here's a composite picture of Allied and Japanese military losses. In addition the Allies have lost many MSW, AS, AV and AVDs. Overall as of 24th December 1941 ( where we are at the moment) total confirmed Allied shipping losses are 145 ships vs 35 Japanese ships ( mostly APs and AKs). I suspect there are probably another 20 or so Allied ships which have probably sunk or are so badly damaged they'll never leave DEI ports/Singapore/Manilla before these ports fall to my ground troops.

Impressive results for less than three weeks of combat operations. So far, things are going your way, with the slight caveat that losses of AP's and AK's are more serious for the Japanese side.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

A pretty impressive strike from Kendari considering I liberated it from the Caucasian Imperialists only two weeks ago. As I've decided not to go after Northern Australia at this point in time I am going to use the forces at Kendari to mop up the Allied forces caught behind my lines. The initial stage of this operation will comprise aerial bombardments of the airbases in southern Borneo and the taking of Mendano. I will bring overwhelming force this time, I've learnt my lesson.

I was VERY surprised by this result. I had 1700 AV and was pretty confident of getting a 1:1. Instead my forces got slaughtered by a Chinese defence which in the combat reply mustered 3000 AV as a result of fortification and terrain bonuses. That's ok though I have several tank and engineer regiments on the way. Since Homan will fall once I dislocate it by taking Ichang and pushing north-westward I have pulled all of my troops from that axis, excepting 2 Independent Brigades which act to prevent any Chinese advances, and have routed everything from that axis into reinforcing Ichang. In about 1 week I should have a bit more than 3000 AV at Ichang and will shock attack the Chinese. Once the rout once I will have them as I have front-loaded this offensive with EVERY tank regiment in China and Korea with the aim of continuing to "roll" the Chinese with armoured shock attacks each and every turn, maximising the rate of my exploitation into their operational depth ( Kuching).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 46,36

This occured near Changsha and was the result of my forces taking the rail junction above Hengchow, thus threatening further advances southward and northward. My intention is that Trey will have to maintain forces here to prevent either of these threatened attacks and thus will be prevented from using these troops against the real threat ( my forces north of the Yangtze). Obviously I will mount diversionary attacks here once I see the first signs of a pull-out to reinforce the northern forces. Until then I will remain relatively quiescent, perhaps just seizing a bridgehead across the river in a week's time.

Ground combat at Rangoon

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 3802 troops, 16 guns, 4 vehicles

Defending force 25217 troops, 241 guns, 16 vehicles

Below is a list of air losses so far... Only in recent days have I managed to begin getting a handle on A2A combat, sweeps and suchlike. In addition many of my losses have been to FlAK when conducting shipping strikes so I expect the loss ratio to begin moving more in my favour in the near future. My aim is to maintain a 2:1 or, if possible, 3:1 loss ratio once my major unit transfers and concentration are finished.

My new invasion strategy of "Are there TWO kitchen sinks we can throw?" over-committment strikes. I think Menado is pretty much screwed after taking about 400 casualties from bombardment and having almost the entirety of 3 strong SNLFs land within one 12 hour period.

Ground combat at Kungchang

I continue to pour paratroops into Kungchang as I think that not doing so would be fairly gamey. I am rushing ground troops there and I don't think the paras will take Kungchang by themselves but they're trying, they're really trying.I'm impressed by their performance and the germs of a plan for employing my 6 para-borne units ( 1st and 2nd para, 1st to 3rd Yokosuka and the aviation regiment) in the invasion of India. If I create a para-TF which will land in the 2nd wave at whichever Indian base I capture complete with crated planes I could use paratroop operations in the enemy's operational depth to divert and misdirect his forces whilst also seizing key terrain so as to facilitate the speedy advance of my armoured spearheads. Once the Phillipines falls I'll sail the required transports from Japan/Tainan etc and post my operational concept.

Hi, I think the 56th (or is it the 35th?) Bde begins the game with 100 prep points for Kuching. (something to look at for your next turn 1 plan)

That would be the 35th which starts in Cham Rahn bay. The 56th is prepped for Davao and is based at Palau.

Martin 139: 1 destroyed

This is significant. This is the first Martin 139 strike which aborted due to losses. I am slowly but surely whittling down Batavia's ability to interdict my transports. Once I regain my operational mobility I will polish off the DEI very quickly. I still need to pound Singapore before I can take Sumatra though.

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 1

Japanese ground losses:

The last of the paratroops fly in. Some may question why I am continuing these attacks when I know Kungchang won't fall. Well, the reason is that the lead echelon of my forces making for Kungchang comprises only 2 divisions and if the Chinese Corps racing up the road from Sian reach Kungchang first every fortification level I reduce now will save me far more than 30 men.

Guns lost 4

About 1000 AV worth of forces is going to arrive over the next 3 days so I felt it was time to make sure the enemy at Ichang hadn't been reinforced. As far as I can tell they have remained static. Once I have over 3000 AV in place and rested I intend to shock attack and try to roll him all the way to Chungking with my tanks. From my reading of the rules this should be possible BUT as this is my 2nd PBEM ( and the first didn't even make it this far) and I have never played more than 3 days vs the AI I am very inexperienced re: game functions so it may not work out the way I think it should based on my reading of the rules...

I'd appreciate any advice people have on this... If I shock attack and set for pursue AND am using tanks on rail lines will these tanks end up in whichever hex the enemy units have retreated into at the beginning of the next turn... such that I can shock attack again and "roll" the enemy backward?

Hmm, my recon hadn't picked up ANY Allied units in Mandalay so only an unsupported Tank Regiment made the initial crossing. It has, however, achieved 1:1 odds. In order to ensure success 2 of my remaining 3 Tank Regiments are sent to support it. If possible I will try to "roll" this force with repeated shock attacks also. 1 Tank Regiment will, unfortunately, have to be kept in the are west of Pagan in order to keep the 2+ Brigades of Allied troops I've trapped between there an Rahaeng bottled up.

Allied ground losses:

Hmm, 0:1 odds BUT greater casualties inflicted on the Allies than the Japanese.... Ok, now I'm officially really confused about the land combat model. Everything I've seen suggests that with 0:1 odds the enemy should suffer fewer losses than my units yet this is not what happened here. Ah well, mox nix.

Below is a picture showing what is currently "trapped" at Batavia. As near as I can figure there are about 400 to 500 AV worth of Dutch troops at Batavia and I have forces totalling about 570 AV in Java. One reason why I am trying to cut down the bombers and fighters at Batavia is that I have another 600 AV within 2 days sail of Java but any transports which try to load these troops are going to be bombed into oblivion during the loading process.

Thank Mogami, 2nd ACR,

If I had it to do again I'd scrub Banjarmasan and concentrate more force into Kuching and Singkawang. Of course that's if I ever play another game of WITP. Since I would really like to play this one to the end I don't see myself playing WITP again... If WITP II is out I'd probably switch to that in preference to another WITP I PBEM.

Plus I like the idea of learning as I go in what is pretty close to being a one shot deal, just like it was in real life.

Anyways, 1 more turn to post before we're all fully caught up with the current state of the game.

Hit and sunk. I think the ASW is pretty reasonable with the ability to score successes on both sides of the equation. Of course I have very little experience with things in previous patches but even my tiny number of days played under 1.6 yielded an awful lot of dead subs under dubious conditions. Under 1.795 it seems that effort pays off on both sides.

Day Air attack on Singapore , at 23,50

This is a truly devastating raid against Singapore. I flew my planes from Alor Star to Johore Bahru and staged them from there. The change in range made a major difference to the number of Sallys flying and that, in turn significantly impacted the return on my investment. I have no aviation support at the new base so 7th Aviation Regiment is racing down the railway lines to Johore Bahru while a small Base Force is repairing the stragglers at Alor Star. I'll fly them in as they repair. About 140 planes are currently awaiting repair at Alor Star so with a small Base Force they will take a long time to driblle in but Singapore isn't going anywhere and I don't plan to take it for some time yet. Closing the airbase will significantly aid the Sumatran campaign though so I am happy with this.

Ok I know I said I'd wait but BANZAI!!!! [:D] Losses are heavy but with 1:1 odds and a reduction in fort level I am inclined to continue attacking on the basis that even a damaged division should be more than enough to deal with cut off enemy Brigades near Rahaeng.

By the way does anyone know if I will be able to load the divisions of the Burma Army into transports when I decide to invade India? If I could do that then I would be looking at landing in India on or about the 1st of February with about 10 Japanese divisions ( 1 to 2 divisions may be tied down in Singapore) and upward of 8 tank regiments as well as over half a dozen engineer regiments.

That should be enough to force India's collapse in fairly rapid fashion leaving me free to look into New Zealand and Siberia. Thoughts?

Hi, Don't let the combat reports fool you.
Attacker with less then 1-1 (0-1)
attacker 15
defender 59

looks like defender got the short end of the stick but 12 of the attackers 15 are dead while only 1 of defenders 59 is dead. (being not as well trained they suffer disruption and damage but will recover)

This is the 2nd of the two dedicated ASW TFs I've set up... After seeing how things work in-game I am thinking that the best way to carry out my ASW taskings is to have a single PG ( ASW rating of 2) escort each convoy in order to prevent enemy subs attacking on the surface and achieveing definite sinkings whilst keeping my PCs in ports dotted along my SLOCs ready to dart out and intercept whatever enemy subs my ASW patrols spot. An alternative to the "quick-reaction force at many ports" would be to concentrate all my PCs into 3 or 4 ASW TFs and have a fifth comprising a few DDs or APDs escorting a slow CS or AV. That way I could bring my own air support and chase a single enemy sub down with a fair degree of certainty. In the short term I would take heavier AP/AK losses but I'll be trading that for increased certainty of sub destruction thus saving all future APs/AKs that sub might sink on future missions.

What's the general thinking on this? Better to have a CS or AV-led fleet comprising a hundred PCs spread amongst 5 or 6 flotillas prosecuting a single sub contact until it is utterly destroyed or to have the 5 or 6 flotillas spread out about my holdings resulting in more damaging attacks on subs but, probably, fewer sinkings? I'm inclined to follow the "prosecute until dead" approach with massive PC fleets myself but there may be some major drawbacks I haven't considered.

Japanese forces CAPTURE Kungchang base !!!

My Japanese paractroops finally capture Kungchang. Trey is responding to this drive by pulling his troops out from Homan and Sian as rapidly as he can manage. Unfortunately this means that many of them will be available to defend Chungking. It seems that I mis-timed the attack on Yenen and should have held off until the 31st of December, when my forces in Ichang would have been fully ready to attack there. That would have enabled me to capture more of his forces before they retreated to Chungking. I have decided to wait for my AV at Ichang to exceed 2500 and then shock attack. I will only be able to make about 4,000 AV by shock attacking and I know the enemy can muster about 3,000 AV in defence but with several tank regiments and engineer regiments available to drop his forts I may be able to do something useful. It is worth trying in any case since failure to try now will definitely let his forces from Sian and Homan escape. Expect massive Japanese losses soon [:D]

This was a shock attack as a result of crossing a river when entering Davao. The 56th is very badly disrupted and fatigued but with a few days of rest should recover enough to shock attack and get 2:1. When it does I will transfer it to the DEI. I have a transport TF sitting outside Davao just waiting for 56th to become available again.

South Seas Detachment, screened by KB and close to 20 submarines takes Johnson Island. I will dig in and place the CDs, BFs and Construction battalions which will reach Midway over the next week in these front line bases ( Midway, Johnson, Palmyra, Christmas Island). I also have to mine them up to the appropriate levels. Logistically it will be very difficult to mine Christmas Island as heavily as I wish for several months but Palmyra already has 2,000 mines in place and I will bring Johnson and Midway up to the same level over the next month. With the addition of a minimum of 2 CD units, garrisons in the 100 AV range, support for up to 100 Bettys and 100 engineers at each base I think these will be strong enough to act as a breakwater against any rash Allied counter-attacks. Oh I also have submarine tenders at Midway and Palmyra and am bringing supplies of fuel in to these bases also. Pretty soon I will be able to stage any unit in my fleet from Midway and every unit with the exception of CAs, BBs and CVs out of Palmyra.

Below you can see a picture of a 10-ship convoy making for Pearl Harbour. Unfortunately my Glen-line spotted it and the 8-sub wolfpack backstopping the 4 Glen-equipped subs watching the West Coast have been vectored in. I expect contact on the 28th or 29th December. Once the convoy gets half-way to Pearl Harbour I will begin to vector in the 15 submarines guarding the western approaches to Pearl. Unless there are significantly more escorts than I have spotted I am hopeful of sinking most of this convoy. I have it seriously outnumbered and should be able to pick off any cripples easily such that any ship I hit will, eventually, be sunk. Please let it be a troop convoy or planes and not just supply and fuel.

I am continuing to hit Balikpapan while 3 NLFs close on the island. I currently plan to land at Samarinda. My recon tells me there is only 1 BF there and so it should be overrun quite quickly. I am going to use my Tinas to drop elements of the 1st Parachute Regiment at Tarakan (which my recon shows is empty... Trey seems to be moving his forces to Balikpapan to mount a concentrated defence) and with the Allies confined to Balikpapan I should have all other bases in Southern Borneo and a clear line of resupply from Tarakan to Samarinda to help repair my disabled squads before I move on Balikpapan. Even if this doesn't work out entirely as planned it'll just mean I have to maintain some NLFs in Borneo to hunt down Allied units running around the hinterland.

Enemy ground losses continue to mount and tomorrow I will transfer most of my Bettys and Zeroes from Kendari to Johore Bahru from where they will pound Batavia which lies 600 miles south-west of Johore Bahru. I require about 1 week to transport an additional 2 Regiments to Soerabaja and another week for those two regiments to reach Batavia. I'm moving the minesweepers required to defend my battleline from the mines at Batavia into Pontianak and in about another week I should be able to deploy the battleline as a bombardment/interdiction force at Batavia. I estimate Batavia will fall in the middle of January with the important bases in Sumatra following suit by the beginning of February... This is important as I plan to have the Indian invasion fleet passing through the Batavian straits sometime between the beginning of February and the middle of February.

The B17s at Canton will definitely sink the Aratama Maru. On the positive side they will run their supply down and when I do take Canton the pilots will march into captivity with the infantry and the bombers will be available for my testing and evaluation units. This should help our designers to come up with suitable prototypes for bomber interceptors... I fancy something nippy with 4 x 30mm cannon and a pusher propeller. I think I will call it "Shinden"... This bombardment attack was my "final test" before considering a Shock Attack. I think that with this preponderance of force I can take Clarke Field by the end of the year. I only have 4 divisions in place and ready to attack at present, 2 more are only 3 or 4 days out and would have made sure but every day Manilla remains in Allied hands is another day of delay for my Indian invasion so I'll take the excess casualties in return for the time saved.

I am considering airlifting an NLF in to Pagan in order to advance on the 3 Brigades trapped north of Rahaeng and protect my right flank as I push the 2 Divisions of the Burma Army and the 4 Tank Regiments northward... My question is this.... How long would it take my Burmese force to make it through the paths to Imphal and Kohima. From reading the manual I would make it out to be something along the lines of 36 to 40 days assuming good supply and support in the green. That would mean that with my Indian invasion due to land sometime around February 14th I could make it into India at about the same time the transports land. However I am not convinced that this would dislocate the defences of Western India sufficiently as it would require no more than 1/3rd of the Indian Divisions to be diverted to Eastern India in order to halt me in place, leaving 2/3rd free to contest my landings. Perhaps it would be better to simply load the additional two divisions and 4 tank regiments at Rangoon and have them land as a 2nd wave of troops once the enemy have fully committed to defeating my initial landings. This would give me the operational flexibility to land either northward or eastward of my initial landings, depending on where my recon finds the enemy weak, dislocating his entire defensive line.

So, which is better, forcing the Allies to commit sufficient force to Dimapur to halt a 1000 AV Japanese attack in its tracks OR maximising my operational flexibility by having this force available to land behind the enemy MLR a la Inchon? I haven't read any AARs which feature the Japanese or American players making much use of follow-on waves to dislocate the initial enemy responses and I think this is leading most people into highly attritional battles and away from the cheaper but more difficult to co-ordinate manoeuvrist victories.

For some reason my Bettys and Nells decided to bomb the enemy ships even though they were well within torpedo range. I think this may have been because I set the secondary mission of these bombers as Airfield Attack... Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Another strange combat result. I get 2:1 odds yet the Allied forces do not retreat. Is this common? Everything I'd read about in AARs states that ground combat is all about getting 2:1 odds. Once you have 2:1 odds and the enemy have a valid retreat path to an enemy base then they should retreat. Yet this isn't happening.

As you can see the 2nd Japanese division has arrived at Rangoon. Tomorrow the Burmese Army Shock Attacks. Rangoon will fall shortly.

Below you can see a picture showing the situation in China and Burma. Essentially Burma is mine. In China the troops on the Changsha axis have crossed the river to Chungking in order to make clear the threat to Chungking along the Southern axis. They aren't actually going to do anything, they are just to draw off as many Chinese units from the main operational sector for as long as possible and move over to the offensive when the forces facing them begin to transition northward.

The red arrows in the north show the axes of exploitation from the initial penetrations of the enemy northern front. Further developments will have to await the pattern of reaction of Chinese reserves but will, unsurprisingly, centre on an attritional battle for Chungking which I will gladly accept. Trey will accept this battle in order to kill my soldiers while I will accept it and their loss in order to attrit his supplies.

From my understanding of the problems the Chinese have with their supplies I am willing to bet that the Chinese will reach their culmination point due to loss of supply before my divisions reach theirs due to attritional loss. The reason for this belief is that I have means to attrit his supply at little to no cost to my ground forces ( bombardment attacks and aerial attacks on airbases, ground troops and enemy resources) whilst his only means of attriting my ground forces ( ground assaults and bombardments) also eat up his supply.

RE: Lunacy or Shrewdness?

Post by Nemo121 »

As we're coming to the end of 1941 I was wondering if anyone had any particular areas they wanted covered in the end of year round-up?

If you post here and ask about it I'll do my best to answer/show the relevant screens when we hit January 1st 1942.

P.s. I was reading the Rob vs 2ndACR AAR and the mention of "Anarchy Games" on page 5 of the AAR pretty much sums up the house rules ( or lack thereof) in this game... So it would appear that we're playing an Anarchy game ( with a few house rules to help the Allies keep the brits in the game if India and Australia fall).

Oh and one other thing... What is the maximum size of a Japanese Daitai or Sentai? Maximum Chutai size seems to be 9 to 12 ( depending on if they are fighters or bombers/transports) but after disbanding a couple of Oscar group fragments into a Sentai which started out with about 20 planes I now seem to have a Sentai with about 45 planes sitting at Johore Bahru. I keep reading about Allied players creating groups of 72 P40s etc in AARs but I've not seen any mention of the maximum Japanese plane group size...

Hmm, a deafening silence... If there's no interest in the AAR I'll keep going till about the end of January and then stop it there. No point wasting everyone's bandwidth.

With that said here's the turns up to the end of December...

He is using his aircraft to bomb the para-borne troops blocking the retreat from Sian. Fair enough, flying twin and four-engined bombers will burn through his supply. I did a quick review of Chinese supply in China and I estimate that between resources and HI the Chinese make about 2500 tons of supply a day. Add in another 500 for the Burma Road and we have a figure of 3000 tons of supply per day or 90,000 per month. He has about 50 Corps each with an assault value of 250 making a total combat value of roughly 12,000 AV in China. Each AV point seems to require about 3 tons of supply per month. So, total supply requirements for ground units just sitting around doing nothing is about 36,000 tons of supply.

With my northern offensive and the closing of the Burma Road over the next week I will halve his daily supply production to about 1500 tons per day. So now he will create about 45,000 tons of supply per month with a base requirement of about 36,000 tons of supply per month. That gives him 9,000 tons of supply for building fortifications, airbases, flying sorties and fighting. I think that is an insufficient margin for these sorts of operations so I will continue my policy of non-resistance and allow him to burn supply in return for inflicting casualties on my ground forces. Until such time as I capture his 2nd-line bases and thus have the opportunity to burn more of his supply with close-range bombing missions I will allow these flights to continue ( unless they begin targetting my means of production).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Moving the Nells and Bettys to Johore Bahru has really paid off in terms of airstrikes against enemy AKs and APs... I've come to the conclusion that what Trey was doing with all these ships was bringing supply and resources into Singapore in order to stock it up for a long siege. That's fine by me as my plans don't include Singapore falling quickly. Anything I can do to encourage its continuing existence as a "distraction-in-being" for him is fine by me.

AK Empire Moonrise, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
AK Empire Faith, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

The underlying maths here seems to be that against uncapped targets with weak AAA I can expect roughly 1 torpedo hit for every 3 Betty/Nell sorties. Against targets with strong AAA fire this seems to rise to 1 torpedo strike for every 9 sorties while against targets with strong CAP and strong AAA ( enemy BB and CV TFs) it seems to require up to a full Daitai to guarantee a single torpedo strike.

All of the above is, of course, predicated upon the enemy ships having little damage and full AAA ammunition coffers. Once AAA ammunition begins to run out or the ship's manoeuverability is lessened due to damage the number of sorties per hit falls accordingly. These assumptions will be used to plan my defensive dispositions for February when it will become necessary to hold enemy CV, surface and probably even invasion fleets at bay in the Pacific while my carriers and battleline support the invasion of India.

ASW attack at 67,44

Well in the absence of feedback from the forum I figured that it would be better to go with concentration of my ASW forces rather than dispersal in an effort to provide every TF with cover. I have decided that my SOP is going to be a single PG as escort for each convoy (excepting invasion convoys which may require stronger AAA defence) while all PCs and APDs are concentrated into 4 ASW TFs ( 1 to cover the Soerbaja area, 1 to cover the Borneo/Mindanao Gap, 1 to cover the northern Phillipines and 1 to cover Japan). As more PCs and APDs come on-line I can expand the number of ASW TFs and begin adding them to the Guadalcanal and Midway areas. Currently I'm aiming for about 10 ships per ASW TF. We're playing under 1.795 so we're not using any house rules re: ASW TF size... It doesn't really seem to be required as subs seem to be a lot more survivable in this game.

Two to one odds but as the initial fort level was 1 I would have needed 3:1 to force a retreat. I wasn't aware that to force a retreat one actually needed odds of (2+fort level) to 1. Thanks to Spence for telling me about this as it is an important piece of information for my future operations.

More attacks against isolated Allied remnants. I am beginning to believe that these represent a series diversion of resources but I am also concerned that if I withdraw all my units from the hexes containing them they will regain their freedom of movement and could retake undefended bases in my rear. I will see if I can shake a couple of NLFs free from somewhere and detail them to hold these isolated Allied units in place whilst the forces currently doing so are freed up for action at Singapore and Manilla.

I had completely overlooked Kai Island early on but it looks like a good base for army twin-engined bombers to use in hitting Darwin in a few months. Consequently I slip a single AP in with an NLF to take it. I figure a single ship has a chance of not being spotted and evading any B-17 strikes. Once the B17s spot me no amount of LRCAP or AAA fire seems to do any good.

It would appear that the air defence of Manilla has reached its tipping point. My losses are falling while enemy fighter losses are increasing and bombers I have transferred in from Korea appear to be having an effect. Good, the stage is being set for next week when my ground forces will strike.

I think it is time to talk about my Maskirovka plan which has been operational sine December 7th and was the reason behind my initial force allocations. As I'm sure some of you were noticed the invasions of the Pacific have been completed on a shoestring budget. The only sizeable ground forces committed were 1 Independent Brigade to Rabaul, 4 strong Naval Guard Units (mostly to Port Moresby) and the South Seas Detachment ( to Midway). Everything else was taken by weak NLFs ( backed up by the 52nd Naval Guard unit in the Pago-Pago area). My fleet has made this operation appear much stronger than it really is by the continued presence of my carriers. Only 2 Nell/Betty Daitais have been committed to the Pacific. 2 more have been comitted to the Noumea/Port Moresby axis.

In the DEI region the only thing which has made my invasions possible is the presence of the battleline and even then it has only been possible to begin closing Batavia down once the Betty force at Kendari was no longer needed to cull the escapees from the Phillipines. Again, the Kendari/Southern Borneo operations were accomplished by 4 Naval Guard units and a half-dozen NLFs as well as a single Regiment at Banjarmasan which ended up having no effective impact as I forgot to load supply on its invasion transports. OOPS!!!

In Malaysia the only thing which has made my forces there appear strong has been the employment of my entire Oscar and army level bomber force. I had a few Nate army units in the Phillipines but everything else went to Malaysia and is pummelling Singapore.

So, as you can see, KB has the task of making my actual committment to the Pacific seem much more formidable than it is whilst the battleline does the same in the Northern Australia/DEI region and my army bombers tend to make the committment to Malaysia appear larger. In the meantime my ground forces have concentrated in the Phillipines.

Basically I have 6 Engineer Regiments, 4 Tank Regiments and 7 Infantry Divisions on the island. I have no Army HQs yet as I was concentrating on shipping in combat power and aviationsupport in the initial stages but 2 Army HQs are only a day out and the Southern Area Army is on its way. Imperial Guard Division is loading at Saigon and will add its weight to the attacks in about 10 days time. Everyone has been prepping for Singapore for some time. This includes the Imperial Guard Division which I have had prepping for Singapore since I realised Trey was not conducting a forward defence in Malaysia... I made sure it was seen at Georgetown and then immediately pulled it out and headed it for Lingayen. Trey still believes I have 3 to 4 divisions on the Singapore peninsula and I've been quite careful to only have elements of 4 divisions actually engage in combat in Singapore. The remaining 3 divisions on the island and the Imperial Guard will only be unmasked when it omes time to Shock Attack Manilla. I'm actually quite happy with the success of this maskirovka as Trey seems to be deceived into thinking that my main operational effort is in the DEI and Singapore/Burma with a very strong subsidiary effort in the Pacific whereas the reality is that I've committed the vast majority of my deployable ground force to the Phillipines whilst parcelling out my battleline, KB and army air force to the other 3 theatres on the basis of which of them could best survive in each of the three other theatres. Burma got the tank regiments by default as they were obviously of no use in the Pacific or the DEI and weren't required in Malaysia as I maintained my operational flexibiliy by initially tasking the Imperial Guard Division to that peninsula.

This is a very important result for me as W.5 is one of my 20 knot minesweepers and is being sent to Soerabaja where it will meet up with the battleline on or around 3rd January 1942. Once it joins the battleline this force will cruise into Batavia and bombard the defenders there. Over the next two days I will bombard the defenders incessantly. ETA to Batavia of the 4th Regiment which I've recently landed in Soerabaja is on the 7th January so if the defenders look suitably beaten up I will attack on the 8th with 3 regiments. If not I can resupply my battleline from Sumatra and bombard again until the time is right. Another regiment is due at Batavia on about the 12th of January so after the 2nd set of bombardments 4 regiments will be available and I cannot see Batavia surviving that. They key here for me is that Teloekboetang MUST fall before the end of January as I need to have that strait entirely clear of enemy forces so that my Indian invasion fleet can pass through...

As to coastwatchers... I am prepared to explain what shipping they see as supply TFs and will route KB farther southward, hopefully avoiding the coastwatchers or making it look like I'm going for Australia.

1st Provisional Tank Division continues to push the Chinese forces rapidly backward. I'm curious to see which way the retreat once they reach the Chungking/Sian crossroads. If it were me I would set them to retreat toward Sian in order to increase the time it would take the Japanese tank forces to reach Chungking. But, then again, the Soviets would always accept what western doctrine would have called unecessary doctrine in order to increase their own operational tempo or decrease that of their enemies.

Below you can see the overall summary screen. The main things to take away from it are that the Japanese are leading about 8500 to 6000 at this point. Of course I've never played for points in games and don't intend to do so now. I always used to say in Combat Mission AARs that the goal should be to annihilate the enemy in totality and that then the points will take care of themselves. Ideally no matter how well this game goes I would like to play it out to the bitter end... whether that be an invasion of the Japanese mainland or a kamikaze-based holding action some distance from the Home Islands.

Aerial Losses are about 2:1 in my favour. In the last week or so as I've gotten a handle on aerial combat the loss ratio has moved significantly in my favour. I've also cut most of my non-essential sorties down to nothing and have managed to pare my sorties per day down by about 40%. This has been reflected in decreased operational losses in recent days.

Ground combat loss ratios have fallen from the 20:1 ratio which I was maintaining when I'd lost 100 points worth of ground units to 2,000 points worth of enemy units but this is mainly because of my heavy losses in breaking the initial defensive lines in China. In any case while losses are heavy for so early in the game they are more than compensated for by the increased speed of exploitation they have pruchased.

RE: Lunacy or Shrewdness?

Post by Nemo121 »

I've included a screencap of the production screen. As you can see things are going relatively well. Supply is being used up at a high rate but, then again, I am expanding my naval shipyards, merchant yards, armament and vehicle assembly by between 25 and 50% each. Ideally I'd like to look at increasing my naval shipyards by 100% as I think that having the important CVs and BBs earlier would allow me to increase my operational tempo sufficiently to compensate for the supply used. E.g If you use 100,000 tons of supply in 3 months to build up naval yards BUT this allows you to capture resource-producing areas which produce 33,000 tons of supply 4 months earlier than you otherwise would have/delays their fall to the enemy by four months/ allows you to capture them when otherwise your attack would have failed then that was supply well spent.

As far as the shipping losses go the Allies have lost:

3 BB, 1 CA, 3 CL and 20 DD. In addition they have lost 3 PG, 3 AVD, 1 AV, 8 submarines, 19 PT boats and 2 AS.

Their transport fleet has lost 46 AKs, 14 APs and 4 tankers.

Their mine warfare fleet has lost 5 minelayers and 12 minesweepers as well as 6 DMS and 7 DMs. Since, until sometime in 1943 the Allies only have 8 DMs and 8 DMSes these last blows are extremely significant. I stationed KB a few hexes north of PH for two full days to make sure of these DM and DMS losses as from reading AARs the loss of these vessels seems to really dent Allied invasions.

In addition the PoW and Repulse as well as a number of enemy CAs and CLs have been hit by bombs and torpedoes and are expected to have suffered light to moderate damage requiring a month or more in a large shipyard. They can still fight if I try to invade the bases they are stationed in but they will fight less effectively. I am also convinced another 3 to 4 submarines have been sunk by my ASW efforts but have not yet shown up as sunk.

My losses comprise 2 CL ( including Kashii which I don't much mind losing), 10 DD, 4 ML, 3 MSW, 2 PG, 2 PC and 3 submarines ( all lost to enemy naval/asw searches). I have also lost 22 AP, 4 AK and 1 tanker.

15 of my losses were to the Coastal Defence guns at Bataan/Manilla, Midway and Soerabaja. 10 ships were lost to enemy submarines, 6 to mines around Soerabaja, 4 to enemy surface action and 19 to sundray allied aerial attacks. At least half of the losses to CD occurred when I sent ships in to raid Manilla/lay mines there not realising that the CD guns at Bataan would be able to hit them as they passed. This is where all 4 MLs got destroyed on the 2nd night of the war.

So, with the need to approach CDs decreasing, the need to venture into enemy defensive minefields decreasing and enemy submarines being effectively attacked my losses should not rise too much until it comes time to press my AP fleets into the maws of the coastal defences of India in mid-February.

One other interesting thing was that when I checked out what accounted for the Allied vessels I found that while I would have expected my Bettys/Nells & Kates to account for most of them they actually accounted for only 45 enemy ships. My battleships accounted for 33 with their main guns while my heavy cruisers accounted for 12. Destroyers of all classes accounted for another 13. Port-attacking Bettys sank another 7 while submarines sank 7 and surface torpedo attacks accounted for another 7. Vals accounted for 11 and the Marys operating out of Johore accounted for 1 AP ;).

I must admit I was surprised to see the battleships and heavy cruisers accounting for as many enemy vessels sunk as the Bettys/Nells and Kates put together but it just goes to show you what can be gained from operating your surface fleet as aggressively as possible.

One really weird thing which has happened is that non-Chinese forces are beginning to show up in China. I am seeing two green Allied forces on the map in China. I can only imagine that they have been airlifted in OR that this is a bug.

Has anyone seen this before and is it a known bug? If the Allies have spent time robbing the Burmese and Indian theatres of forces in order to send them to the diversion that is China then I welcome it and am sorry that my advance may threaten the airbases he is using to divert his forces from the critical theatre ( India) but I can't figure out what the rationale might be behind this move.

I also had a look at my top pilots list to see what the ratio of kills per plane committed was. I found some VERY interesting results.

1. Nates: Over 120 committed to combat. Losses close to 60. Kills, 5.

2. Tojos. Only 6 survived to be committed to aerial combat. 2 Lost to enemy airplanes. Kills, 5.

3. Oscar. Approximately 120 committed to combat. Losses of slightly under 50 planes. Kills 64. Most of the losses have occured vs the AVG so I consider this loss ratio to be somewhat unrepresentative of the relative merit of Oscars vs the average Allied fighter of this time.

4. Zeroes. Approximately 120 committed to combat theatres. Total losses for the month of about 60 ( of which 1/3rd are OP losses). Kills, 155.

5. Sallys. Approximately 200 committed to combat theatres. Total losses of about 35. Kills, 1 [:D] [:D] [:D].

One very interesting thing I've noticed is that not a single one of my pilots who has made a kill has been killed or wounded. So, it would appear that EVERY single one of my losses has come from pilots who had neither the skill nor the luck to make a kill. This is definitely in keeping with the 90/10 rule of combat and a nice thing to see come about in-game.

Day Air attack on TF, near Rangoon at 29,34

Japanese aircraft
G3M Nell x 7
G4M1 Betty x 4

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
AK Louisianan, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AK Memphis City

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x G3M Nell bombing at 11000 feet
4 x G3M Nell bombing at 11000 feet
4 x G4M1 Betty bombing at 11000 feet

According to this the Bettys hit the Louisianan with a torpedo from 11,000 feet. Someone give that pilot a medal!

No way a torpedo could survive intact after being dropped from 11,000 feet. We have a program glitch of some kind here . . .
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

The green units are Chinese units assigned to SEAC command. They are division strength IIRC. Totally normal and they are there at the start of the game.

Nates suck.

The 11,000 feet report is a bleed over from another combat report. Known issue. They are actually dropping from 200', but it is taking the altitude from the report ahead of it for the altitude. NO biggie.
