Rising Sun still fun

Post by Temple »

I bought "Forge of Freedom" last week and am enjoying it, but I'm stuck now waiting for the patch to fix the siege problem. Since I had some free time and nothing I had bought recently seemed to peak my interest, I decided to re-install "Rising Sun Gold". I have the World at War compilation (hell, I got *all* the Talonsoft re-issues[;)]) so it's compatible with WinXP. It's been a couple of years so I didn't know how it would run versus the latest video card drivers, et al...

Turn out it works pretty darn well[:)]. My desktop is set at 1280x960 or thereabouts and RS didn't have a problem with that. It did give me the usual warning about how I was running 32 bit graphics and RS was designed for 16 bit graphics and I might get some slow down or something, but it wasn't a problem.

I let the game generate a scenario for me, Japanese versus American, battalion sized, open flat terrain, December 1941 timeframe, meeting engagement. It rolled up a large map with objectives in the middle. Being 7/41 I got some Phillipine Scout infantry with 3-inch mortars and LMG support, a couple of 75mm field guns, some 37mm AT guns, a company of cavalry(!) and a company of M5 Stuart tanks. My Japanese opponents it turned out got about the same, but with tankettes instead of cavalry and a company of engineers.

The battle went pretty well. I expected the AI to do an uninspired move to contact but they did secure half the ojectives quickly and it was only because I was able to rush some tanks forward that I was able to secure the other objectives. The game lasted 17 turns and while I ended up with most of the objectives I took a pounding and lost a lot of units.

Rising Sun Gold comes with lots of scenarios and campaigns, but don't overlook the scenario generator. It actually works pretty decently and can be a nice change of pace.

Another thing that draws me back to the campaign series is the availability of 2D and 3D views. The 2D gives a nice hex-grid wargame type overlook while the 3D, in spite of the age of the gaming system, still looks pretty nice and is great for getting the feel of the battle, plus all that nice eye candy [;)].

Just thought I'd relate the fun I still have with these games.

Oh, and one more thing [;)]

For a hoot I installed Rising Sun Gold on a Toshiba Satellite laptop, with the wide screen. With the screen resolution at 1280x800 the game looked just fine, no stretching or anything, in fact the extra couple hundred pixels horizontally gave me more screen real estate in the game. Some of you may say "of course" but I didn't know how it would behave on a wide screen. Cool.

Finally went back and completed all four Rising Sun bootcamps and the Tutorial "Storming Wakde Island". Eeked out a Major Victory by a last turn storming of tanks onto an objective, but it was close. One unlucky roll of the 10d die and I would have a torched tank instead. If I hadn't followed the tutorial walkthrough in the Players Guide in the first few turns who knows how bad I would have gotten nailed? [;)]

Rising Sun is the one that handed me the most PBEM defeats but it is my favorite from that series for playing vs AI. Just reinstalled WF gold on an XP machine. Do have some display problems guess I should try RS.

Just completed the scenario "The Burma Railroad" as Japanese. I hadn't played this one since when the game came out so the British surprised me (again!). Night rules are interesting in Rising Sun and there's nothing like the naked feeling you get when the AI pops a starshell over your troops standing in clear ground. Whoops!

I bought RS years ago and haven't played it for a long time. A CM PBEM friend got the game from another friend and we have started our first PBEM game.

No problems on XP SP2 yet either.

I have a printed manual and found a PDF version on a website for him.

Yes, I've been playing more of the RS scenarios, going from least complexity to most. I've just completed "Ambush Valley" which I never played before and boy it's tough, even against the AI.

In the Rising Sun Far East Project mod installation I have, I've also being tinkering with creating a scenario to simulate, in a rough way, the Japanese parachute assaults in the Dutch East Indies in early 1942. I don't have any real OOBs to go by, but that's fine since I want the player (as the Japanese) to not know what to expect when he drops in!

Once we decide if RS is something we want to play on a regular basis, I will get the FE mods.

Already found that through Google [:)]. Actually I first got turned on to this by seeing a mention in an Osprey Campaign book. Personally I prefer to tinker with hypothetical situations. Frankly after East and West Fronts, Rising Sun battles are pretty bland due to a dearth of armor and other exotics in most battles. So I'll consider adding a few twists.

Also I might have to buy this guy to help inspire me! [:D]

The mods are in pretty good shape, although there is a slight error in the French portion which pops up a few errors about some armored car platoons that don't have hardware assigned. The only real pain is if you want, like I did, to have all of them in one installation. I finally got smart and put all the files into one folder, unzipping in the order suggested by the instructions. That's now my "comprehensive" mod zip file with about 1500 files in the zip and weighing in at 8MBs. So if I ever install on another rig I can just unzip that. However I've already caught an error in my installation when trying to build a scenario. I copied over the original RS Gold rsmap.exe (or was it the rsedit.exe?) file and that now seems to be ok. I'll probably just end up burning an "as built" CD of the installation.

I can't seem to figure out how to throw smoke with engineers. I press alt + ctrl + rt click and it states the unit doesn't have the ability to fire smoke.
The engineers are full AP, all alone on the map, show smoke in the UI, smoke in the toolbar.

I believe it is just Alt + Right Click for accessing smoke, assuming the unit is already in fire mode. Smoke can only be fired in the same hex as the engineer unit - if it can fire smoke.

Take care and good luck

That's it. I was trying to fire into the adjacent hex.

I use ctrl to fire as I find it less confusing than clicking the mode button and back again. If I used alt + right click on the adjacent hex the engineers would move to that hex (since the button is still in move mode).

Thanks for the help.
