MY AI Issue(s)

Post by KG Erwin »

How is it that the allegedly-clever human manager gets duped by an allegedly-stupid AI and gets surprised by an unexpected steal or hit & run or even an attempted bunt for a hit? LOL. This has all happened to me.

The AI isn't perfect, and never will be, BUT even at present, it CAN offer up some surprises, and for that I'm grateful.

I understand the AI will never be on par with a human manager BUT I did a 8 team draft, seeding 2001 players
and Ichiro went undrafted. This is an impact player left on the market.

Edward, I am strictly speaking of how the AI manager performs on the field. The AI GM, well, that's something else.

What were his ratings compared to who was drafted? I don't really think its valid to take 30-teams worth of players and draft only an 8 team league and then point out individual cases of players that were not drafted. Now, if you drafted 30 teams and he wasn't drafted (or wasn't a starter) that would be another thing.

Shaun, I agree with you on the whole BUT if you had only 8 teams drafting from 30 teams worth of 2001 talent with $ not being an issue it doesn't make sense for Ichiro to be passed over by Cliff Floyd, Marty Cordova, & Rondell White unless the AI is weighted too heavily looking at Power which looks to be the case.
But this is just an observation of mine how this game works is not in my realm of understanding.
Ichiro 2001 ratings on the 100 scale are 96 contact, 99 hands, 71 range but then we get the 76 speed & 68 arm.
Which seem about 10 points too low for him that year. I wish I could site the source but in 2001 Ichiro was clocked the fastest in MLB going from home to 3rd & 1st to 3rd. Ichiro's talent is well documented & I just don't see how any AI even in a 4 team league could justify not given this player a starting job in 2001. The player most comparable to him rating wise is Frank Catalanotto and he was drafted. I will do a 30 team draft & report where he went

I did the 30 team draft. He goes in the 10th rd & he gets a starting job as a lead off hitter.
Which proves your point...your game is good [&o]

Ichiro 2001 ratings on the 100 scale are 96 contact, 99 hands, 71 range but then we get the 76 speed & 68 arm.

Now, I'm no where near on par with the baseball minds on this board, but if I'm looking at drafting a Right Fielder and I'm drafting from all 30 available teams and it's only an eight team league, and I see a player with a rating of just 68 for his arm, I'd probably shy away as well.

From a neophyte's standpoint, in right field, the runners are moving away from you (from 1st to second and second to third. 3rd to home is a given), so your arm had better be above average.

I know Ichiro is terribly quick and a great hitter, but from a defensive standpoint (and in an 8 team league with your choice of the entire major leagues, you could not afford to ignore defense), I'd say the game's AI stands up.
It's time to kick ass and chew bubblegum... and I'm all outta gum.

Brockleigh,

I think Edward's point was that Ichiro was rated way too low for speed and arm in 2001.  I think Edward is correct.  I think 76 speed and 68 arm IS way too low for Ichiro in 2001.  You don't get to be an all-star sensation in right field with a 68 arm and you don't steal 56 bases very often with 76 speed.

Does he have Roberto Clemente's arm in right field?  Probably not, but Ichiro's arm is probably closer to Clemente's than it is to a 68.

Remember that historical players are not individually rated for any of their attributes. While it's easier to derive key values from the Lahman Database for batting and pitching ratings, I'm not sure how you go about figuring out arm strength. It may be randomly assigned for all we know...
