AAR for Newbies

Post by kam99 »

As a newcomer to the game I feel it would be really useful to read an experienced player's AAR on one of the initial Historical Battles.

I have worked my way through the Bootcamps, read the manuals, and played the first Historical Battle several times. I feel I (and perhaps other new players) may benefit from some basic tactical advice.

I would be really grateful for any pointers.

Hi kam99,

Here are a few things I would suggest.

1. Setup with realism being veteran as playing recruit developes bad habits. Put game speed to medium and scroll to slow. As a beginner this will allow you to think while you play and find things quickly.

2. Always play with the jump map available. That is the small map in lower left hand corner showing you general dipositions of friendly and enemy teams.

3. When buying units always have 2 command teams at very least. Helpful to Germans but essential for early war Russians.

4. Do not become carried away with tanks. You spend high points for tanks that a low cost AT gun can easily kill.

5. When defending AT guns are cheap and effective as an alternative to tanks. Hide them in tree lines and buildings. In pre-game set up use the fire command to check line of sight to be sure you have good position. Keeping units in ambush mode is a good way to hide position until a high value target shows it self.

6. When attacking Tanks are very useful but be cautious and screen with infantry. Otherwise you will have dead tanks.

7. Be patient. Don't run when sneaking may be safer.

8. Try to use real world tactics. Fix the enemy and flank them if you can.

9. When moving troops try to keep them in cover. Again the fire tool is useful for determining line of sight. If you can not see him he cannot see you. Smoke is good as well.

10. Again, patience, patience, patience. It pays off.

11. Go to BHQ to play against humans. One of the great things about Close Combat is that maps are small, games are short, and you can fit one in easily within an hour.

I hope this helps.

regards John

Tanks kill Infantry
Anti Tank Guns kill Tanks
Infantry kill Anti Tank Guns

is the holy trinity for CC3/CoI, and goes pretty well for all the other versions...

With CoI, you will generally need to be more cohesive.

As z1812 so sagely points out, patience is a virtue [:)]

Gentlemen,

Thank you both very much for the good advice which I will attempt to put into practice. I still feel it would be useful to follow an AAR to see how experienced players approach the first Historical Battle.

It would be an interesting thread.

The only AAR of CoI that I know of just now is in another Thread in this Forum.

It's a great idea to post AAR for the first historical battle, and maybe some of use can add a couple of versions. The thread may turn out to be a good resource for the (hopefully) many newcomers.

When CC3 was first released, there was a "strategy guide" book. It discussed all the details of the game, then went battle by battle on both sides. Plus it has descriptions of the ops and campaigns in the original game. Worth finding, IMO.

I didn't pack it in plastic and it is well read. So it's only value is sentimental.
