New Idea for Base Defense

UFO: Extraterrestrials is a futuristic real-time/turn-based strategy blend set on the fictional planet of Esperanza in 2025. Having made a bloody first contact with a strange form of life from another planet, the player is thrust into the tough position of leading the defense of this isolated planet against the never-ending assault of these hostile invaders

I think bases should defend the same way fighters attack. Why don’t base weapons have a weapon radius based on the type of weapon built and participate during the real-time combat. Each weapon system could have an inherent armor defense and take damage just like aircraft. Once all the defense weapons are destroyed, the aliens could land and take over the base. Also, the bases could contribute to destroying the alien aircraft along with the fighters.

Aren't bases supposed to be using stealth? Trying to NOT be seen by the enemy? I would think actively shooting at any UFO in range would give their location away. Counter productive IMO. Although if it were included as an "option" in a mod it might be cool...

I was quite surprised to find that your defense units can be destroyed during an attack. I had a base with eleven particle defense units that was attacked by a battleship. I lost eight of the defense units but destroyed the battleship.
That's the only battleship I ever destroyed in the three games I played. That will also be the last defense units I ever build.
I like to tackle battleships after they've landed.
