my little mod won't load

Basically, all I've done is modify the AcwStart file to rename some units. I've looked it over a few times, and I don't think I did anything wrong, but the scenario won't load. What could I be missing? Is there something there I shouldn't have changed?

What are the names of those units? Cut and paste them (don't retype) and maybe we'll spot something.

did you edit them with excel ?
Maybe excel added some nasty hidden special characters for file format.

I would recommend notepad++, a mighty freeware editor.

I always use notepad to change text files (who used excel for that?). I wanted to rename my brigades 1st NY, 2nd Vermont, whatever (unhistorical for brigades, but more interesting than just being numbered). I did some research and came up with some idea on how to name them for the July 1861 scenario (but I copied it and renamed them in the new scenario). Here's some of the file:

Instead of 1st, 2nd, I just put 1, 2, etc., because some of the names can get long and get cut off in some screens (connecticut just has too many letters). Could that have effected something? I also got rid of the special units (Sykes NY Regulars) and redid their numbers so they'd be just ordinary brigades. I also renamed the special units file, and created another one with just a single unit there, to keep others (except perhaps that one) from coming up during the game. So the file is there, but just has one unit in it.

Well, right off the bat, I'd say that you've made a mistake by not using (underscore) for spaces. You want "New_Jersey," not "New Jersey." Not to mention that if "1 Connecticut" means "1st Connecticut" you need an underscore there, too. Try that and see if it works.

It occurs to me that the code might dictate that if the ACWStart file has a unit renamed to "1_Connecticut" the program will check the ACWSpecUnits file for it, figuring that it's a Legendary Unit. So it might be that you can't rename brigades. Eric will have to weigh in on this, though.

I added the underscores, but the scenario still won't load. However, the original July 1861 scenario loads and plays fine, even though the legendary units file is almost empty.

Would you mind posting the entire file?

We use Excel to edit the files, as long as they're saved in text mode we haven't had a problem (though Excel will sometimes add extra quote characters to cells that contain format specifiers, like commas.)

Here's the file. I did find a few places where I gave the same name to two units, and where I forgot to underscore instead of space, but it still does not work. I also added an artillery brigade in teh Dept of NE Virginia, perhaps I did that wrong.

I popped it open in Excel. There are two rows that have too many entries: 3_Ohio and 1_Maine. In each of these it looks as though there is a superfluous -1 before the 10. I have attached a (hopefully) corrected version. I haven't had a chance to test this yet, but the rest of it seems OK.

Good news.

That's why it's best to use Excel (or a similar program) when modding -- you need to be able to see the columns properly. (Just make sure that when you save the file no superfluous quotation marks are introduced, as sometimes happens.)

The quotation marks are introduced when you use Excel format specifiers, like commas.  We automatically strip quotation marks from the beginning/ending of some of the columns if they occur there.
