RHSEBO Test 11A vs Chicken of the Sea: Continuing Actions

Post by el cid again »

This is a rematch with 7.944 files incorporating the workaround for active Russians and depth ratings permitting AS devices to function.

Anyway, you have done a wonderful job with RHS. I gave up on WITP as hopelessly flawed a couple of years ago. When I came back and found RHS it renewed my interest in this "game" and I am really enjoying it. Congratulations on a job well done.

NEW COMMENT

As I've mentioned before, the economic model in RHS is a huge improvement and increases the complexity of logistic issues. For the Allies at this point, this is a major problem as it should be historically.

burning - 3 BB and 1 CL heavily damaged. 11 casualties, 98 other hits. A further 66 Vals and 71 Kates went after
a heavy TF at sea near Molokai - escorted by 72 Zeros - 3 P-36 were on CAP. 4 Vals and 2 Kates lost. 20 bombs and 5 torpedoes
hit BB Tennessee and BB Oklahoma and CL Helena. Tennessee sank immediately from a magazine explosion caused by a very
rare deck armor penetration by a 250 kg bomb. A further 18 Vals went after another heavy TF near Lahaina - and put 2 bombs into
BB Arizona, but missed BB Nevada. 4 Vals were lost.

A JAAF attack on 13th ROC Field Army caused 11 casualties. Another on 68th Field Army caused 68 casualties.
3 on the Hopei Militia Regiment caused 17, 25 and 42 casualties, respectively. Another on Hong Kong Fortress caused

2 Jakes missed TK British Lord at Brunei - these from ships in the same hex.

36 Army Ki-47/Kates combined with 21 Nells and a host of fighters from both services to put 12 bombs into DM
Tracian near Hong Kong.

2 Army Ki-47/Kates put 1 small bomb into AK Makassar - in the Makassar Strait near Georgetown.

13 Army Ki-47/Kates and 21 Ki-36 put 22 small bombs into gunboats Peterel and Wake near Shanghai.

The CVE force at Legaspi put 2 bombs and a torpedo into AK Panay near Roxas - which happens to be
on the island of Panay. 11 Kates from different carriers (some armed with bombs) were involved.

15 Bettys attacked Johnston Island. 9 casualties, 1 gun lost, 2 other hits.

19 Nells attacked Wake. 8 Wildcats on CAP. 1 Nell lost. 2 F-4F3s destroyed. No hits or casualties.

3 B-17s escorted by 9 P-40s attacked CVE Taiyo at Legaspi. 13 Me-109s and 1 Pete on CAP.
1 Me-109 and 2 B-17s damaged. No hits.

3 ROC IL-4s - probably out of Chunking - missed an AP at Swatow.

2 B-10s escorted by 3 Buffalos out of Tarakan missed an AP at Brunei.

KB sent 17 Vals and 20 Kates (escorted by 94 Zeros) against the heavy TF at Lahaina.
2 Kates lost. 4 bomb hits and 1 torpedo hit on BB Oklahoma. BB Tennessee drew raiders - but she
could not be found - indicating she was already sunk. Later 18 Vals put 6 bombs into a PG at Kona,
saving the landing force there from a surface action with it. 21 Kates at extended range put 4 bombs
into AK Arctic East of Hawaii. 7 Vals put 6 bombs into an AK at PH - in spite of 6 P-40s on CAP.
20 Vals put 13 bombs into a DM near Molokai - sinking her. 21 Kates put 6 torpedoes into AV Wright
at sea near Hawaii. 21 more Kates put 6 torpedoes into AO Sapulga at PH - but 4 Kates were lost
to 10 P-40s on CAP.

A large mixed force of bombers put 13 bombs into Moth - but missed Redstart - near HK.
14 more of these bombers missed 2 old DD in the same area. Most fly out of Bako - but some
out of Canton.

22 Nells put 4 torpedos into 2 PG at Olongapo - sinking them. 3 bombers damaged.

Gunboat Peteral took 5 more small bomb hits from a large air strike out of Shanghai.

The CVL force near Johnston Island sank MSW Robin with 2 torpedoes delivered by 30 Kates -
probably because she sank before more hits could be scored.

Ro-34 torpedoed AK Governor Wright near Luzon.

BB Arizona and BB Nevada - with 2 modern CL and 8 DD in company - engaged the Main Body near Lahaina.
4 Fujimoto class BB, 1 CL, 3 DD and 8 DE form the Main Body. USN scored 32 hits on 13 ships, 7 set on fire,
2 with heavy damage. IJN scored 29 hits on 8 ships, 2 set on fire, BB Nevada heavily damaged by 16.1 inch
shells. The action involved mainly secondary and tirtiary guns - until these set Nevada on fire.

Two divisions of PT boats then engaged the Main Body - running it further out of ammunition - but one of these
was lost.

The heavy forces then reengaged. USN scored only 3 more hits on 3 ships. IJN scored 10 hits - all on the 2 BB -
mostly from long range - mostly 16.1 inch hits.

TK British Lord - which seems to have a charmed life - was not hit when attacked by a division of IJN torpedo boats
at Brunei.

Gunboat Hira missed PG Wake - which is too damaged to shoot back - near Shanghai. 4 other gunboats then engaged,
and managed a single 3 inch hit - but Wake escaped them - still afloat in spite of many bomb hits.

Ro-33 put a shell into an AK - and missed with torpedoes. These guys need torpedo training!

A cruiser force bombarded Rabaul - which hit CL Kumano with CD fire - probably six inch. 105 casualties, 2 guns lost,
20 other hits.

Lahaina CD units managed to fire 163 shots and hit 3 ships, 1 set on fire.

Wake fired 414 shots in defense, scoring 22 hits on 6 ships (and missing one target), 2 set on fire.

Landings at Tarawa, Johnston I, Kavieng, Cagayan, Buin, Stroeng Trang, Kona, Legaspi, Aparri, Guam and Hollandia were unopposed.

Brunei Fortress fired 45 shots in defense, scoring 3 hits on 3 ships, missing one more target. Its mine barrage also
scored one hit on a tanker. Later 43 more shots were fired and 1 more hit scored.

Ground assault captured Wake island, 5 F-4F3s destroyed when it fell.

Ground assault forced 2 Field Armies and 1 HQ out of Sinyang, Central China.
Ground assault at HK achieved 1:1 odds and reduced fortifications to 5 - which is as good as it gets on turn one.

Allied bombardment at Rabaul caused 5 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Nanyo Detachment. Similar bombardment
at Brunei was ineffective.

Unopposed ground assault captured Tarawa.

Ground assault captured Johnston Island.

Air assault captured undefended Ye Burma, but failed to capture defended Tavoy Burma.

8 December (Hawaii) 9 December (Tokyo/Manila)

The night turn began with troops landing at Rabaul, Appari, Legaspi, Kavieng, Kona, Cagayan and Stroeng Trang.

Landings at Brunei were opposed by mines and CD guns - 39 shots resulted in 2 hits on 2 ships - no mine hits.

RN DD Vandetta and Vampire attacked Ro-28 at Singapore - but failed to hit it.

Ro-33 torpoed a MSW unit near Luzon.

Ro-41 missed AK Churruca at the mouth of Manila Bay (Olongapo)
but fired again on the same target and hit it with a shell - setting it on fire.

7 Blenheim night fighters attacked Singora - but failed to score.

2 sub chaser units missed I-7 near Trincomalee.

AK Kano Maru - offloading supplies at Kona (the rest of her TF had abandoned her after battles the day before) - was attacked by PG Ontario. The ship is armed with the superb 3 inch 60 gun - and these hit Ontario - driving her away. In fairness to Ontario - she is too weak to take on any well armed ship.

Two divisions of PT boats ran in on Lahaina. This was abandoned by all but 6 severely damaged DEs left over from the fighting the day before. These PT boats put 2 torpedoes each into 2 different ships - one of which sank and the other was scuttled later in the day. Clearly this is what PT boats are for. One division was sunk by shellfire - again the superb 3 inch 60 being used in twin mountings instead of single 4.7s usually found on the Japanese vessels of this class - making them very similar to USN DEs of several classes.

I-9 torpedoed AK Thedens at Rangoon.

Yamato, Nagato and Mutsu - with 9 DD in company - bombarded Cebu. They put one shell each into 3 AKs - Ethel Edwards being badly damaged by a heavy hit - destroyed 1 aircraft - caused 175 casualties, 2 guns lost and 32 other hits.

4 cruisers and 6 DD bombarded Rabaul. Technically 2 are CA and 2 are CL - but the CL are Brooklyn like 15 gun ships - Mogamis as built rather than after conversion to CA. These caused 78 casualties, 1 gun lost and 13 other hits.

Ro-26 shelled an AK near Batavia - but her torpedoes missed. These older medium subs fire pre long lance torpedoes with less range and accuracy than the torps the later subs use.

The new torpedoes can miss too - I-157 missed AK Norse Carrier at Zamboanga.

The day turn began with landings at Rabaul - opposed by CD guns - which failed to do any damage.
The same thing occurred at Brunei.

Other landings occurred at Kavieng, Aparri and Legaspi.

Ro-33 torpedoes TK Gertrude Kellog near the exit from Manila Bay.

USN S-29 torpedoed AK Noto Maru at Cagayan - the only ship still with troops on board - causing 30 casualties to troops as well as damage to the ship - but there was no fire nor heavy damage - unusual for a torpedo hit on an AK. 3 DD counterattacked but failed to hit the sub.

Dutch sub KXV missed a tanker at Brunei

Unknown ships detected I-173 at Oahu - but failed to localize and attack

I-15 missed CA Indianapolis at Palmyra. 5 DMS attacked her but failed to hit as well.

12 Ki-48s scored 8 airbase related hits at HK

31 Ki-21s, 14 Ki-43s and 35 Ki-27s raided Rangoon. They were met by 12 Buffalos and 17 AVG P-40s. 3 Ki-27 fighters, 1 Ki-27 bomber - and a Ki-46 recon plane were shot down. 1 Buffalo and 5 P-40s were destroyed - all but one of the latter in the air. 8 hits were scored.

12 Nells caused 10 casualties and 6 hits at Cagayan.

8 Bettys, 5 Ki-48s and 4 Zeros raided Clark (wow - not many). They met no CAP - and caused one runway hit.

A JAAF attack on the 50th Guerilla Regiment caused 61 casualties and 1 gun lost. 4 more on the Hopei militia regiment caused 78 casualties and 1 gun lost, 9 casualties and 1 gun lost, 46 casualties, and 10 casualties, respectively.

A JNAF attack on the Guam Insular Force caused 10 casualties and 1 gun lost.

This game's wake island is happening at Tavoy Burma. The RAF 2nd Forward Air Station - a tiny air support unit with very little ground combat power - has stood up to two days of airborne assault. 8 Ju-88s sent against the unit caused 17 casualties, 1 gun lost and 1 vehicle lost - for all the good it did (see later report).

KB sent 11 Vals and 38 Kates - unescorted - into PH. Met by 34 P-40Bs, 3 vals and 14 Kates were lost to both fighters and AAA. However - they hit already damaged USS Oklahoma with 5 bombs and 2 torpedoes - sinking her. 38 Vals and 21 kates - escorted this time by 59 Zeros - went back - met the same 34 P-40Bs - shot down 24 of them - and proceeded to put 11 bombs and 4 torpedoes into Nevada - sinking her. 2 Zeros, 1 Val and 3 Kates lost - some in the air - some to AA fire. DD Reid was missed by these raiders. Later still 16 Vals and 69 Zeros came in again - met 13 P-40s flying CAP - shot down 10 of those - and put 5 bombs into small PG Ontario - sinking her.

32 Kates and 12 Ki-51s - escorted by 44 Zeros and 11 Claudes out of Bako - put 5 bombs injto ML Redstart - sinking her.

36 Nells out of Takao put 2 torpedoes into PG Wake - sinking her.

15 Army type Kates (actually B5Ms - but these are so similar to B5Ns they had the same code name) - escorted by 23 Ki-41s - out of Singora - put 4 bombs into AK Makassar - in the Makassar Strait. Already in damaged condition, she sank.

8 B-17s attacked all 3 IJN BB at Cebu - but missed them. 6 Petes and 2 Rufes - not yet in service (this is a unique detachment with preproduction machines) resisted - damaging 4 of the bombers. Defensive fire damaged 1 Rufe.

1 B-17 missed an AK at Cagayan.

I-157 put 2 fish into AK Ravness at Zamboanga.

The battleships at Cebu were attacked by a division of Philippine Army PT boats - but they were sunk without hitting anything. The same force than engaged and sank gunboat USS Isabel. This ship - an ex MSW from WWI - had served as the Presidential Yacht. She was later modified as a patrol vessel - and then ordered to sail to Indochina - seek out Japanese warships and provoke a fight - on secret orders by FDR to Adm Hart. [See The Cruise of the Lanokai for details. She was the only one of three such vessels to make the attempt.]

I-9 put another fish into AK Thedens at Rangoon - she had done the same thing the night before. The tough old ship refused to sink.

Indianapolis and her escorts attacked I-15 near Palmyra - but failed to hit her.

Ground assault captured Cagayan from the defending air base force.

Ground assault captured undefended Kona

Ground assault unexpectedly captured Rabaul on the first try. This was a shock attack.

Similarly ground assault unexpectedly captured Brunei on the first try.

Ground assault achieved 2:1 at HK - reduced fortifications to 4 - and tied for second place as the best result vs HK - only once did it ever fall on the first assault.

Ground assault captured unexpectedly undefended Aparri - the defenders had fled somewhere.

Ground assault captured undefended Stroeng Trang Cambodia

Ground assault achieved 114;1 at Kavieng - but the defenders - a tiny force - did not surrender - they still retreated.

Ground assault achieved 15:1 at Lahaina - capturing it - the defenders moving over to Molokai.

Ground assault captured undefended Hollendia, Legaspi and Viet Tri (Tonkin)

Air assault failed to go in at Tavoi - possibly due to weather - but why the troops on the ground also failed to attack is a mystery?

Japanese naval forces abandoned Lahaina - to let things clarify - and all but one ship also abandoned Kona (although in the event only a weak attack was mounted vs Kona). They met KB 320 nm West of Lahaina - a position deliberatly picked to fool his subs and surface raiders. It worked. We go back to Lahaina tomorrow.

9 December (Hawaii) 10 December (Tokyo/Manila)

The night turn began with USS Catchelot attacking BB Fuso at Lahaina. Torpedoes failed to detonate. DE Fuyo counterattacked - and missed.

Ro-33 missed an AP at sea South of Singapore.

Ten destroyers at Singora detected and attacked Dutch KXIII - but failed to hit it. Later in the night they tried again - this time they hit the sub - ASW is working.

USS Sargo missed a tanker in Philippine waters. Is there some problem with sub attacks tonight???

8 Blenheims raided Singora - causing 4 casualties and 1 runway hit.

I-154 torpedoed PG Mindinao at Jolo. Nope - nothing wrong with sub attacks - just the die rolls.

Ro-41 at Olongapo put 2 shells and 2 torpedoes into AK Candesa.
She was loaded - there were 24 troop casualties. Whatever she carried - all were probably lost when she sank later.
Not on the ship sunk list - few small AKs survive 2 hits by large torpedoes - plus shell hits.

Minelayer Syoka Maru - attempting to lay a defensive minefield at Lahaina - got caught by a raid of 5 DD - and was badly damaged by 20 shell and 1 torpedo hits. She fled to Lanai - and will try to make port at Lahaina for repairs tomorrow.

Ro-26 torpedoed and shelled - and sank - AK Makian at Batavia.

I-24 - four hexes North of Oahu where she runs air searches - put 2 fish into AK Mercury. DMS Hovey counterattacked but missed.

Ro-24 torpedoed AK Joan Muller at Singapore, setting her on fire.

The day turn began with 28 Ki-21s, 35 Ki-27s and 14 Ki-41s raiding Rangoon (they came from Pisanoluke Thailand) 12 Buffalos were on CAP: 7 were shot down. 10 airbase hits were scored.

41 Ki-48s out of Kampong Soam Cambodia raided Georgetown Malaya - met 7 Buffalos - 1 bomber lost: 10 casualties, 1 gun lost, 9 other hits.

8 B-17s out of Manila (meaning they came with a minimum bomb load - it is too small for B-17s) hit Cagayan, Mindinao. 9 Zeros and 6 Pets on CAP damaged 4 of them - and the rest gave up. Petes made 2 of the four attacks that damaged a B-17. These are - however - very early and poorly armed B-17Ds - which were not considered acceptable for ETO operations.

27 Nells and 27 Ki-48s escorted by 106 Zeros raided Manila. 23 P-40s on CAP. 14 P-40s and 1 B-17 were destroyed - some on the ground. 9 hits on 3 ships, all reported with heavy damage (but that may be pre existing). 27 casualties, 1 gun lost, 4 other hits. 3 Ki-48s damaged. Then 7 more Kates missed DD Farragut. 9 Vals put 4 bombs into DD Worden. Then 11 Vals and 23 Zeros went downtown - to PH - met 15 P-40s - shot down 5 of them - and put 2 bombs each into DMS Lamberton and DM Breese. Next 12 Kates came back with 20 Zeros - met only 10 P-40s - shot down 2 of them - and torpedoed DMS Boggs. They missed DD Monaghan. One Kate was lost.

39 SOVIET bombers of 2 types attacked the Imperial Manchu Army 50th Cavalry Regiment - inflicting 56 casualties and 1 gun lost - near the border at the Northern tip of Manchukuo. This set off furious diplomatic exchanges and a reprisal raid was ordered on 2 adjacent Soviet units for tomorrow.

A JAAF attack on the ROC 88 th Field Army was ineffective. 2 more on the Hopei Militia Regiment caused 28 and 10 casualties.

5 Vals from KB at Lahaina put 2 bombs into CL Detroit NE of Hawaii. Then 8 Kates, 30 Vals and 40 Zeros attacked a transport TF - missed PG Sacramento - but put 20 bombs and 5 torpedoes into 3 AK and a PC unit: all on fire with heavy damage.

17 Nells sank PG Oahu and PG Luzon West of Luzon with 2 torpedo hits each. 3 more missed DD Peary in the same area.

6 Nells out of Cagayan torpedoed AK Ravness at Zamboanga: on fire, heavy damage. 4 more torpedoed AP Ruth Alexander near Suragao.

6 Ki-48s out of Legaspi put 4 bombs into PG Asheville, but missed PG Tulsa, at San Jose Buenevista. 2 more missed AS Otis.

9 Bettys out of Bangkok missed the Burma First Barge Group on the Irrawaddy River in Burma.

2 Jakes missed AO Trinity in the Visayas.

Ro-26 missed an AK at Batavia. Later she shelled, torpedoed and sank AK Reteh.

Two divisions of PT boats attacked badly shot up Syoka Maru - but she replied with her guns - and they ran away.

Unidentified escorts at Singapore detected Ro-24 - but were unable to localize and prosecute the attack.

Ro-29 shelled and torpedoed TK Busiman at Muntok - 3 fish probably doom her.

Troops landed unopposed on the river at Kamong Phet Thailand.

Ground assault achieved 3:1 odds at Gaum - and the Guam Insular Force capitulated.

Almost 35 000 Japanese troops in 2 divisions attacked almost 13 000 Chinese troops in 2 Field Armies on the RR West of Shanghai - these retreated - 313 Japanese to 193 Chinese casualties. 3:1 odds.

An attack on a guerilla regiment in East China caused it to retreat. An attack on the adjacent Hopei Militia Regiment - now isolated - achieved 41:1 odds - but the static squad prevented retreat. 10 Japanese to 241 Chinese casualties.

Almost 36 000 Japanese troops attacked almost 14 000 Allies at HK. Fortifications reduced to 3. 525 to 68 casualties (13 to 10 guns lost) implies HK will not fall tomorrow.

856 Paras of the First Raiding Brigade captured Tavoy Burma from the 437 survivors in the RAF 2nd Forward Air Station. These retreated along the trail to Three Pagoda's Pass on the Thai border - because Ye is captured. That means they are on the main LOC between Thailand and Burma.

10 December 1941 (Hawaii) 11 December (Tokyo/Manila)

The night turn began with Ro-41 missing AK Parcita at the entrance to Manila Bay.

9 Blenheim nightfighters raided Singora - without effect.

CA Maya and CA Chokai - and Suzuya and Kumano in 15 gun CL form (i.e. as built IRL, not as converted) - and old CL Kinu - and 5 DD -
made a night sweep to Finischafen - met AK Malaita - and sank her with a single torpedo. This was planned - we saw her running toward Lae - and dispatched a sub and this force to try to catch her and another ship. That turned out to be AK Balus - with troops embarked - and she was tropedoed and sunk by I-162 one hex away - 67 troops on board. Malaita sank with 143 troops and 11 guns. I think this was K Force (from Kavieng). I thought they were trying to evacuate the New Guinea Volunteer Regiment - and didn't realize they already had troops embarked.

I-154 torpedoed DD Peary at Jolo.

TF 49 landed elements of a fresh Division at San Fernando. This is really a deception - we are attacking Manila from the South - but it does not hurt to take as much of Northern Luzon as possible (denying the enemy supplies and resources and bases).

An SNLF invaded Lanai by fast transport - and will assault tomorrow.

Ro-34 torpedoed and sank DD Pillsbury SW of Manila Bay.

I-7 torpedoed and sank a PC unit at Trincomalee. Two torpedo hits just might have been able to do that - but I don't like subs attacking sub chasers with torpedoes.

The day turn began with 41 Ki-48s and 23 Zeros raiding Georgetown. 3 Buffalos on CAP. 4 Buffalos and 2 Bennheim NF destroyed. 43 casualties, 21 other hits. 1 Ki-48 damaged.

32 Zeros of the Yamada DHD (= HQ Detachment) swept Singapore. 16 Buffalos on CAP, of which 9 were destroyed. No losses or damage.

48 Zeros swept Manila. 12 P-40s on CAP of which 5 were destroyed. No losses or damage to Japanese aircraft.

A JAAF raid caused 40 casualties and 2 guns lost to the ROC 50th Guerilla Regiment. Another on the Hopei Militia Regiment was ineffective.

Tiny tanker Mei An was torpedoed and sunk by 12 Nells out of Cagayan. 4 more missed an AK nearby.

KB sent only 3 Kates to sink AK Royal T Frank at Molokai - but still scored 2 torpedo hits on her. Then 5 Vals put 3 bombs into DD Worden. Talk about efficient air tasking! Then 19 Vals and 5 Kates with 44 Zeros attacked 4 ships at Molokai. They scored 9 bomb hits on 3 ships - but missed PG Sacramento. AK Vega badly damaged by 7 hits - probably sank. A MSW and DMS both took one bomb as well.

12 Ki-51s out of Aparri put 4 bombs into AK Adrianne Moller at Manila. She sank with 75 casualties = he is evacuating units from the Philippines.
Later 9 came back - there are only 12 in the unit - and put 5 bombs into AK Sarangami at the same place.

2 Jakes missed AS Canopus in the Visayas. Later they missed AK Anshun in the same area.

11 Ki-21s put 3 fifty kg bombs into AK Mandalay - but missed AK Hinzada - one hex from Rangoon. These are tiny river cargo vessels. 3 more - escorted by 5 Ki-43s - went to Rangoon itself - to miss a barge group. They met 15 AVG P-40s and 3 Buffalos - and 2 Ki-43s were destroyed.

13 Nells out of Takao Formosa torpedoed and sank the Hong Kong Transport Group not far from Hong Kong.

3 Vildebeestes - originally based at HK - came in on DM Wakataka at Legaspi - with 7 P-40 escorts. 2 of the Vildebeeste were lost.

5 Ki-48s out of Legaspi put 2 bombs into AK Legazpi near Maasin - ironic that the base and target share the same name. 2 more missed AP Luzon in the Visayas.

I-23 missed DD Farragut near Hawaii.

TF 62 encountered but missed a minefield at Batan Island. It landed troops which immediately attacked and captured it.

Advance elements of 33rd Division - strung out all along the SLOC all the way to Shanghai - landed at Chang Mai Thailand.

A ROC Guerilla Regiment was attacked and it retreated in spite of only 2:1 odds by the force 7 times its size. A similar attack - with 10 times as many troops - achieved 38:1 odds - and forced it to retretat as well.

The First Burma Brigade attacked a Naval Guard Force at Ye - and captured the town. The naval unit retreated toward Tavoy.

An attack by a regimental combat team on the Hopei Militia Regiment resulted in 40:1 odds - but it held. 22 Japanese to 42 Allied casualties.

Undefended Kampong Pfet Thailand fell to ground assault.

11 December 1941 (Hawaii Time) 12 December (Tokyo/Manila Time)

The night turn began when two DMS discovered a (sub laid) minefield at Palembang.

I-6 torpedoed AK Hamakua at Melbourne. She was attacked in turn by 4 ASW units - but not hit.

USS Plunger attacked BB Yamashiro and Ise near Lahaina - but missed - while 3 DD counterattacked - ahd hit
her once.

Ro-34 torpedoed AK Gold Star South of Singapore.

Ironically - 4 of the 6 BB at Lahaina went on a night raid to Molokai. THIS night is the one on which two enemy surface forces raided Lahaina. So there was a series of surface actions with both sides moving into the enemy hex similar to air strikes being exchanged.

First - 5 USN DD ran into the KB itself - at this time with only Ise and Yamashiro (in Fujimoto form) present - instead of 6 BB as it was every other day and night. They didn't do well - firing little and hitting less: 2 hits on CA Tone and DD Hamakaze - only the latter doing serious harm.
DD Dewey and DD Scheley were sunk by torpedoes and a total of 26 shell hits - some of them 16.1 inch.

Next - 2 divisions of 3 PT boats ran in on the transport force - just what they are designed for. But IRL PT boats don't work in Hawiian waters - the wave spacing is wrong - and so it was here: no effect - but exciting moments when torpedoes were fired at optimum range.

Finally, the four "Kongos" (also in Fujimoto form) and 2 CL ran in on Molokai. They ran into 1 AK, 1 DMS, 1 MSW and 1 PG - sinking all with 16.1 inch shells - but missing with torpedoes. 38 hits total, mostly 16.1 inch, 6.1 inch and 5.5 inch. The AK was apparently unloading - 8 casualties were troops that went down with her.

Old USN S-boat S-36 put two fish into AK Nitro Maru - which I cannot find any more - so it probably sank - in Philippine waters.

Ro-24 missed an AK at Singapore.

I-9 torpedoed and sank (3 hits) the Burma 4th Barge Group at the mouth of the Irrawaddy (West of Rangoon).

The day turn began with a sweep of Rangoon by 11 Zeros and 23 Ki-43s. 9 AVG P-40s on CAP - of which one shot down.

48 Ki-48s and 12 Zeros raided Taiping. 3 Whiraway on CAP - of which two shot down. 4 casualties, 11 other hits.

8 ROCAF B-10s caused 16 casualties to the 2nd Yobieki (Reserve) Regiment just inside China's border with Indochina.
3 SB-2s attacked the same unit without effect.

A JAAF strike on the 47th Guerilla regiment caused 35 casualties and 3 guns lost. Another on the 50th was ineffective.
Yet another caused 37 casualties to the same unit. 2 more caused 15 casualties, then 14 casualties and 2 guns lost to the 51st Guerilla Regiment. 2 more on the Hopei Militia Regiment caused 0 and then 1 casualties = ineffective.

12 Claudes caused 13 casualties to the First Burma Brigade.

7 Ki-36 caused 16 casualties and 1 gun lost to the SOVIET 77th Separate Armored Train one hex South of Borzia. This was a mistake - the unit should have been stood down after a reprisal raid.

4 B-17s and 4 P-40s attempted an attack - probably on ships - at San Fernando. 3 B-17s and a P-40 were shot down - and the rest gave up -
when they met 22 Zeros on LRCAP and 2 Claudes and 2 Petes flown out of Apari and off ships in the Gulf itself.

6 Ki-48s and 11 Ki-27s out of Legaspi put 2 small bombs into AP Van Dieman at Manila - in spite of 8 P-40s on CAP. 1 Ki-27 shot down. 2 more Ki-48s put 2 bombs (good shooting) into AP Legazpi (ironically named for the city from which the strike originated) farther South in the Visayas.
4 more put a bomb into AP Ruth Alexander.

23 Kates put 3 large bombs into AP Luzon in the same area - these from the CVE force (San Butai or "Three Force")

9 Ki-21s put 2 50 kg bombs into the Burma 2nd Barge Group at Prome. 15 more put 2 bombs into River Tanker No 4 near Bassein. Then a disaster writ small: 2 more Ki-21s and 2 Zeros tried to attack some ship at Rangoon - ran into 15 AVG P-40s - and all 4 Japanese planes were shot down.

9 Vals and 22 Zeros from KB at Lahaina put 6 bombs into DM Prebel at PH. 16 P-40s and 1 Wildcat on CAP: one of each shot down. 1 Val lost. 10 more Vals and 39 Zeros followed up - met 15 P-40s on CAP - shot down 10 of them - and put 5 bombs into DD Phelps. Only 1 Val damaged this time.

Old S boat S-38 torpedoed the Canton Junk Group at Taan. It had to be scuttled.

I-6 missed AK Hamakua - already burning from a night torpedo hit from I-6 - at Melbourne.

Ro-46 torpedoed PG Asheville at Jolo

Ground assault on a Chinese Guerilla Regiment achieved 44:1 odds and forced it to retreat off the rail LOC it was bocking in East China.
These pesky units tend just to move to another rail LOC.

Ground assault on the elite Hopei Militia Regiment achieved 39:1 odds - but it stood its ground again. 3 Japanese casualties and 1 gun lost to
91 Allied casualties. This was a combined infantry armor attack. Chinese guerilla units are the problem I intended them to be.
The ROC ones are partly self supplied (Red ones wholly so) - and this one is unusual - it starts at full strength and with a good leader.

A naval landing party took undefended Lanai, Hawaii. This is a wholly owned Dole Pineapple Company plantation island with only two towns - one in the crater - one on the coast. Coffee is grown here - they call it Bad Ass Coffee after the mules that hauled it down the mountain to the port in historic times - and the language spoken is Ilacano - a Philippine dialect from Luzon - because the workers are Filipino. You cannot be waited on in a store if you don't understand Ilacano - to this day.

A regimental combat team (1/3 of a division) took undefended San Fernando - cutting off the retreat of the battalion running away from Apari down the coast. It will turn North - to attack that battalion - with more troops landing in its rear tomorrow. This is more or less a diversion - a strange one not drawing a lot of attention - and it may facilitate taking Clark. But the real threat is from the SE - via Legaspi - where the main forces are landing. These are not being opposed in their advance on Manila - and move into Lucena tomorrow. This force already has two divisions ashore - with a regiment of "heavy" 15 cm guns forward - and will get still more troops - including artillery - as time passes. The idea is to invest Manila and shut down production there. Or capture it if not well defended. The forces in the North are simply to divert attention that way and take supply sources - and eventually Clark and Baguio. Olongapo/Bataan can wait to be reduced - unless not well defended.
Undefended Chiang Mai Thailand fell into Japanese control. This mainly to serve as a recon base - it is on the rail net and can be a minor forward air station.

12 December 1941 (Hawaii Time) 13 December (Tokyo/Manila Time)

The night turn began with a PC unit detecting mines at Muntok, Banka Island.

I-170 missed a MSW TF near Molokai - and they missed the sub in turn - although they did attack it.

Ro-42 missed a DMS near Kuching

BB West Virginia and California, 3 CA, 2 CL and 9 DD/DMS ran in on Lahaina and engaged the transport TF - now only unloading supplies - but far too many are on board because the port is very badly damaged. This resulted in a rather one sided battle in which 2 IJN DE were sunk, 1 AP was sunk, 2 transports were badly damaged, another transport set on fire and 2 more slightly damaged. 4 of the larger USN ships shared 6 hits. ALL were damaged prior to the battle - but apparently not significantly.

The really strange thing is that this force got away with it: airfields at Johnston Island, Lahaina and on the carriers were socked in both day turns - so no planes flew except recon. The KB had left to go hunting - and for some reason the Main Body ran in a different direction (in spite of being superior). Since this seems like a real world situation - I think it is fine.

2 USN PT divisions engaged 2 IJA Landing Craft Companies at Molokai - but neither hit the other with anything.

6 IJN DD attacked USS Tarpon at San Fernando - all but one failed to detect or to hit if they did detect - but that one exception was a direct hit - starting fires.

4 ASW units tried the same thing vs Tautog - apparently at sea - and failed to damage her. 4 others tried vs USS Tambor - equally without success.

Ro-40 torpedoed, shelled and no doubt sank AK Fingel one hex from Rabaul - while embarking Lark Force Battalion - we sent the sub, a surface group and set planes to attack this ship. If the sub had failed - she likely was still in trouble. The sub got one shell hit and 3 torpedo hits - not bad for a salvo of 4 - but the ship was stationary.

I-122 torpedoed AK Anikan South of Singapore

Badly damaged I-123 was missed by 2 Allied ASW units. She hopes to return to Saigon - but it is iffy.

The day turn began with 2 ROCAF attacks on the IJA 2nd Reserve Regiment near the border with Indochina. These caused 0 and 11 casualties respectively.

JAAF was equally ineffective attacking the 23rd Field Army. But another caused 191 casualties and 8 guns lost to the 88th Field Army on the RR West from Shanghai. 2 more on the Hopei Militia Regiment caused 0 and 53 casualties.

This report is suspended because I must board an aircraft. Not sure when it will resume.
