A special weapons squad

Post by drgrieve4 »

With my latest squad, I've decided to base it on weapons with special effects (Black ray gun, Meson, Neutron Blasters, Napalm, and Em Pulser). All weapons I've barely ever incorporated into previous teams. Figuring I was missing out of part of game I decided to give them a go, all in one squad.

My first attempt was with NBs. My squad was two Wraithchilds (NB and PL) and a custom recon with PX * 2 and LMG * 2. I tried playing M1 of the Savannah campaign twice, but failed. The CC recon couldn't hold off the enemy recons long enough for the Wraithchild twins to even knockout one opponent. Then they had trouble keeping out of close combat where the NB is fairly useless (min range of 1). Squad deleted.

Attempt two was with mesons and a black ray gun. Squad was a Shadow (4 LMG), the custom recon above, and another custom recon with a BRG. Again I either failed or completed the first mission with severe damage bills. Mesons are not that efficient against low armoured recons and the BRG missed a lot or otherwise the enemy recon stood up fairly quickly. I deleted this squad and both customs recons were also deleted.

Attempt three was with napalm. A long time ago with the freeware version I also tried this and failed, but this time round I would make some improvements. I decided to make a base of close combat weapons and gradually add napalm as the squad progresses.

My starting recons were all customs. A Demonchild (2 PX and 1 FT), a Minon (1 Saw and 1 FT) and a Spark (3 NM7). Finally I won the first mission with a small profit. Success! Squad Inferno is born.

Recons are pretty bad for squads, your jock is not going to survive for long, but the Minon and the Demonchild were good while they lasted (B+). The Spark was poor, 3 NM7 don't generate enough heat and the other recons only had 1 FT each so most enemy recons were disabled by damage as opposed to be taken out with heat. I gave it a C.

I'll post and attach the recons later on. Next post will detail the 4th recon and then the progression to custom lights.
