RHS Test 13C vs Shark: KB withdraws???
We have failed to get 13B to work properly. We had to replace the device file - and did so successfully - because Shark used an out of date one when he began the game. But although nothing else was ostensably changed - air groups never recovered - and the time to figure out why would be excessively (and require understanding the save game formatting in a hex editor - probably). Theoretically we can substitute in all the air group data - and possibly location data - from the last turn - but practically - we don't know where to find it or put it? The new device file is easier - we know what the data should be - and it is so close to the old data - it is easy to find and replace.
This test will be using a slightly different scenario - MEBO - for which see the thread on the Forum. Japan has NO changes whatever - and the Allies almost none. The carriers are (for the first time in RHS and possibly WITP) not at their historical starting points - for reasons of a policy change assumption. This means the likelyhood of their survival is higher - creating a situation similar to what happened in 13B without requiring Japan do anything to let them survive. It may be a slightly more interesting game for the Allies - in that they are slightly more competative slightly sooner.
Shark is working up the first Japanese turn.

RE: RHS Test 13C: New game notice
Shark has been "taking a look at where things are"
Meanwhile I have taken advantage of playing as the Allies to correct some planning issues - and have sent him an unissued location file with slightly better planning for a number of units. The 24th and 25th Divisions are 70 per cent planned for Oahu. Numbers of Chinese units which were planning for different locations (because the units were moved from CHS positions) are now planning for their present location - or the target location they are to attack. Thus - Chinese artillery is planning for Chunking instead of a distant point.
I also changed the NCAC and Y Force (= Yunnan Force) HQ units. The former is much smaller - and has motorized support and motorized engineers - and is essentially a Chinese flagged US unit led by Gen Stillwell. Y Force is delayed until a few days after the historical invasion of Burma by Japan - for which it was formed as a counter. It also has some Chinese pioneers. Other Chinese War Area HQ have a smaller number of pioneers (5 vice 10 squads) added.
A couple of Soviet fortified defense zones and other units were not planning for the right place either - likely because they got moved from CHS positions.
At some point I will issue an updated set of location files - 7.956 - including these and probably other modifications which I spot. Doing this for many scenarios is a problem - and requires data entry time - and at the moment they are done only for EBO and MEBO - and likely not complete in the sense I will continue to identify units that could be better planned.

RE: RHS Test 13C: Filie problem avoided
Although this was the first test of MEBO - and the ship files had a problem with the location for Saratoga and Yorktown - Shark had done his planning on paper - and did not do the data entry until after the repaired ship file was available. So this is going to be a 7.956 test after all - with no problems re the ships appearing. His turn in data entry stage now.

RE: RHS Test 13C vs Shark: Tester comment on the first day
That was quite possibly the most brutal first turn I've seen for a WiTP game. I got way more agressive this time around and it paid off for me.
Comment: Your surface combat model is awesome! I loved the fact that armor actually accounts for something in RHS.

RE: RHS Test 13C vs Shark: Tester comment on the first day
7 December 1941 (Hawaii) 8 December (Far East)
Shark decided to invade at Lahaina. This is the location of a 400 mine minefield - so the opening of the night turn not surprisingly began with 2 AKs hitting mines there. Given he also decided to modify the operational plan and NOT invade Johsnston Island - it will be a long trip for them to reach the nearest port which could pump out flooding ships (Kwajalein). I find Johnston a vital waypoint for operations in Hawaii as Japan - not just a port but also an air bridge and vital recon/strike base on the SLOC.
Next, AP Henderson was torpedoed by I-1 off the US West Coast. He moved all his subs right in tight - so any ship that does not sink immediately has a good chance to get back to port for repairs. Also - we set our ASW patrols from the start - both air and surface - and these three subs won't last very long in operational condition.
The second of these subs, I-4, missed AK Pennsylvanian.
Later in the night I-1 put two fish into TK Connecticut - which may doom her - but tankers are tough in RHS (and IRL) and she is near port.
Admiral Hart ordered the Asiatic Fleet combat units to assemble at Jolo - anticipating a possible invasion - and needing to assemble somewhere. These detected, engaged and missed IJN sub Ro-44 at that location. It means the destroyers made it up from Borneo.
DMS Evertsen detected mines at Batavia. These must be sub laid mines - and it was anticipated - which is why a DMS was sent there.
I-26 attacked and missed DD Blue. Blue, in response, detected, engaged, and hit I-26 - twice. Good going Blue!!
I-172 did better nearby - putting a fish into DD Downes - which didn't succeed in localizing her.
The Allied surface task forces - which are very numerous near Hawaii - reacted to enemy carrier or surface forces in unexpected ways - and many went WSW - which was not anticipated. This - combining with the failure to capture Johnston Island - may mean some have a shot at withdrawall toward the South Pacific and Australia - which we prefer - instead of the usually "safer" directions - to Alaska or US West Coast. KB is North of Oahu, the CVL Force is South of the Big Island - and for that reason no carriers are near ours - nor in position to defend his long LOC to Hawaii.
I-171, at Lahaina, torpedoed AR Argonne. Since no auxiliaries were ordered to this location - I assume AI reactions caused her to be there.
It made no difference - had she gone to Hilo as ordered, I-170 might have got her. As it was, I-170 torpedoed AP St Mihiel instead.
I-170 then tried to engage DD Bagley - but missed.
Later in the night I-172 missed AR Vestal - at Molokai.
One of his major successes was to contest the entrance to Manila Bay. While that is the way the game starts - he apparently amplified this by sending more subs. The first of these - Ro-33 - got first blood - hitting AO Pacos. Ro-33 and Ro-34 were the only vessels of their class - very fine medium submarines of great maneuverability - but it was planned to mass produce them. In EOS family scenarios - this was done - so there are many. They are similar to Ro-100 type submarines, which were derived from them, but lack oxygen type torpedoes. Fitted with conventional wet heater torpedos, they are similar to Dutch medium submarines.
Later in the night Ro-33 missed AK Governor Wright - but set her on fire with a shell hit - in the same location.
Still later she put 2 fish into TK Manatawni - and was missed by MSW Quail in escort. This probably runs her out of torpedoes.
Ro-51 - cleverly placed one hex offshore from Manila Bay - put two fish into AK Fortuna - and it is not likely to survive. Most AKs leaving Manila were loaded - with HQ Asiatic Fleet.
Later Ro-51 torpedoed AK Hai Lea in the same hex.
Still later Ro-51 put a shell into AK Fortuna - but missed her with torpedoes.
Ro-27 - one of the old mediums - torpedoed AO Spirila near Singapore.
Ro-51 missed TK Agiworld in Philippine waters.
One part of the original plan he kept was a minor landing on the Big Island at Kona. One of the ships - ML Syoka Maru - acting as sort of an AMC guardian for the small force - was engaged by SS Gudgeon - but torpedoes failed to detonate. DE Hokaze counterattacked, but failed to score.
Ro-48 put a fish and a shell into AP Legazpi at Zamboanga. We hoped to pick up a Philippine Constabulary unit about to form up there.

RE: RHS Test 13C vs Shark: Tester comment on the first day
7 Dec AM Air Turn
The day turn began with an attack on Wenchow China. This was focused on the airbase - not sure why? 31 Army Kates scored 3 hits.
5 Kates hit Victoria Point - hoping to catch ships in port - but they left. 2 port supply hits scored.
32 Ki-48s hit Kota Bharu. No CAP. 1 Hudson destroyed on the ground. 14 airfield related hits.
8 Ki-21s followed up - getting 14 more hits.
10 Ju-88s in the first Japanese unit operating the type struck Kuantan, Malaya. 2 were damaged by AA fire. 2 Buffalos destroyed on the ground. 16 airbase related hits.
92 Bettys and Nells hit Singapore. 9 Buffalo on CAP. These got one kill - and damaged another bomber. 15 casualties and 1 gun lost. 11 airbase related hits. 5 bombers destroyed on the ground. 5 JNAF bombers lost, 12 damaged.
96 Bettys and Nells, escorted by an equal number of Zeros, with 8 Ki-46 recon planes in company, raided Clark. 6 fighters of 2 types on CAP. 31 fighters destroyed on the ground or in the air. 59 casualties, 1 gun lost, 1 vehicle lost. 24 airbase hits, 18 airbase supply hits, 176 airfield hits. I have not seen a turn file yet - but this probably makes Clark the only Allied airfield shut down this day.
27 Ki-21s followed up immediately. No CAP but 2 fighters destroyed on the ground. 9 more airbase hits, 3 more airbase supply hits, 68 more runway hits. The runway is certainly out. Most units had evacuated Clark in favor of Baguio City. B-17s were replaced before the war by A-20s - better suited to smaller runways - and less of a supply drain. These however are not yet repaired up so they made no strikes today.
20 Bettys out of Maleolap hit Johnston Island. 12 airfield related hits. Johnston was almost evacuated - only damaged squads remain - by DMS acting as fast transports. There was no AA fire or CAP opposition.
ROC 37th Field Army suffered 51 casualties from 12 JAAF bombers of 2 types.
3 Ki-48s failed to harm the same unit.
50th Guerilla Regiment suffered 8 casualties from 8 Ki-27s.
ROC 39th Field Army suffered 96 casualties and 1 gun lost from 11 JAAF bombers of 2 types escorted by 7 Ki-27s.
Then 12 Ki-48s - probably a BW unit - caused 71 casualties and 1 gun lost to the ROC 81st Field Army.
Next 18 JAAF bombers of 2 types caused 9 casualties to the Shansi 15th Field Army.
In East China 27 JAAF bombers of 2 types caused 79 casualties and 2 guns lost to the Hopei Militia Regiment.
27 Ki-51s attacked the Hong Kong Fortress. 1 was lost to AA fire. 7 casualties.
At Kota Bahru 37 Ki-21s caused 71 casualties, 1 gun lost and 1 vehicle lost to the Indian Army 8th Brigade (reinforced).
6 Ki-21s caused 2 casualties to the Philippine Army 41st Division. 4 P-40s on CAP. 2 lost. 1 JAAF Ki-27 and 1 JAAF Ki-21 destroyed.
10 Kates and 5 Jakes caused 36 casualties and 1 vehicle lost to the Guam Insular Force.
15 Ki-48s out of Shanghai put 2 small bombs into PG Wake, at sea nearby.
KB sent 17 Vals and 22 Kates to hit BB Maryland - one hex away. 10 bomb hits, 8 torpedo hits.
Next, 17 Vals and 22 kates to hit BB Arizona. 7 bomb hits, 7 torpedo hits. 4 bombers lost, 3 damaged.
Then an identical force put 7 and 7 into BB Arizona. 5 bombers lost, 5 damaged. These BB were North of Oahu and very near KB itself. The intention was either to flee or to run in on any landing zones - but that won't happen now. Both were lost by the end of the day.
Next the Ni Butai (Two Force = CVLs) South of the Big Island sent 39 Kates to attack BB West Virginia - and DD Patterson in escort. Many of these Kates cannot carry torpedoes - but those that could put 5 torpedoes into the BB. 1 Kate lost, 7 damaged.
Then KB sent a strike into the same hex at BB Tennessee. 17 Vals and 25 Kates put 3 bombs and 4 fish into her. 5 bombers lost, 12 damaged.
The KB also got in the next strike - on BB Oklahoma at Hilo - 4 bomb and 6 torpedo hits. 2 Kates lost and 5 damaged.
Ni Butai sent in another vs BB Pennsylvania - also at Hilo - but the 23 tired Kates failed to score at all. 1 lost, 4 damaged.
KB sent 22 Kates and 22 Vals - covered by 43 Zeros - to hit 3 DD SW of Oahu. 16 bomb and 4 torpedo hits on DD Dewey and MacDougonough caused both to sink by the end of the day. DD Monaghan was missed entirely. 3 bombers lost, 3 damaged.
One of no less than 8 fast ML TFs was hit next in the same hex - no idea why these ships were at that location? - and DM Montgomery was hit and no doubt sunk by 4 bombs and 2 torpedoes. DMS Trevor was missed entirely. 22 Vals and 24 Kates were covered by 6 Zeros.
15 Ki-48s missed PG Genessee at Olongapo City.
5 Kates out of Okinawa put 2 bombs into Peteral - a gunboat which had fled Hong Kong.
23 Kates from the Ni Butai (3 Force) put 1 bomb and 3 fish into AK Gold Star - no doubt sinking her - near Bacolod/Ilolo. Many of the CVEs in this force do not carry any torpedoes.
Their next strike missed AK Governor Smith near Dipilog (Mindoro Island).
The day turn began with an attack on Wenchow China. This was focused on the airbase - not sure why? 31 Army Kates scored 3 hits.

RE: RHS Test 13C vs Shark: Tester comment on the first day
7 Dec PM Air Turn
The afternoon air turn began with another strike on Wenchow, China. 40 Army Kates (actually B5M1s) caused 4 airbase hits, 5 airbase supply hits and 23 runway hits. Although I have never seen this base used - he must fear it as an air base.
13 Ki-48s failed to harm anything at Legaspi. Maybe that is because there isn't anything there to hurt?
6 Blenhems missed BB Mutsu at Kota Bahru.
5 Hudsons missed CLAA Katori and DD Asanagi at the same location.
6 more Blenheims missed an AK next.
7 Blenheims and 2 Vildebeeste missed 3 ships - still at KB.
2 British Vildebeeste (transferred from Hong Kong) covered by 2 Philippine Air Force P-43s missed CVE Hosho East of the Philppines.
12 USMC F4F-3s at Wake strafed Japanese ships - hitting AV Kinagawa Maru 4 times with .50s cals. They missed DD Yayoi entirely.
9 A-20s - based at Palmyra - missed BC Amagi at Hilo.
9 Vildebeeste put a fish into AK Goyu Maru at Great Natuna Island. AP Pusemi Maru was missed entirely.
22 Vals put 8 bombs into BB California at Hilo. Escorted by 22 Zeros - they faced 9 P-40s on CAP. All 9 shot down. 2 Vals damaged, 3 destroyed.
18 Vals put 4 bombs into CL Phoeniz NE of Hawaii. 10 were damaged.
12 Vals put 2 bombs into CL Detroit NE of Hawaii. 3 were damaged.
5 Kates missed CA New Orleans NE of Hawaii. 2 were damaged.
17 Kates put 6 torpedoes into CA San Francisco in the same hex. She sank - of course. 4 were damaged.
16 Kates put a fish into former BB Utah - East of Hawaii. DD Cumings in escort was not hit. 3 lost, 1 damaged.
14 Kates put 4 fish into DMS Perry - and missed DM Ramsay - SW of Oahu.
9 Kates put 3 fish into AK Norse Carrier at Bacolod.
10 Vals missed ML Oglala at PH. 5 destroyed. Again - the ship should not have been there - rather at Molokai - it must have been an AI decision.
5 Army Kates put 2 small bombs into river vessel Peteral near Shanghai.
13 Kates from Ni Butai put 2 bombs into AK Yochow near Catanduanes, Samar, setting her on fire with heavy damage. Navy Kates carry 250 kg bombs (and - re ports - also a single 800 kg bomb each).
12 more put a bomb into AK Sarangami at Catarman, Samar.
A late strike by KB at BB Tennessee at Lahaina put a torpedo into her. 24 Kates were sent - 4 were shot down - 7 more were damaged.
Three IJN escorts detected, engaged and missed USN Submarine Pamapno at Hilo.
Dutch sub O-20 torpedoed AP Miyako Maru at Miri - 24 troop cargo casualties, 2 guns lost.
Ro-51 was subject to ASW attack by an unspecified ship fleeing Manila Bay.
Ro-47 torpedoed TK Ven Koh in the South China Sea.
A heavy surface action group led by 4 Fujimoto class BB engaged and sank DD Patterson at long range at Lahaina. 20 shell hits - the DD never got into range.
4 USN PT units engaged this same SAG immediately afterward - torpedoing BB Yamashiro - and sinking DD Uzuki with two fish. 2 PT units sunk - one badly damaged.
Next this same force engaged the BB Tennessee and her escort DD Henley. The BB sank with only 3 hits - because of extensive damage from air strikes. The DD took a lot of damage - but never got into range to reply: 42 shell hits. Uzuki had not yet sunk during this action, but sat burning furiously away.
The PT boats reengaged the same force - and the damaged unit was finally sunk with 4 more shell hits.
The surviving PT unit reengaged a third time - torpedoed the Uzuki yet again - and sank her outright. But it took 20 shell hits and probably won't survive.
Overall the PT units did well - achieving one torpedo hit per unit. The idea he does not need a string of bases for damaged ships limping back is a poor one - and torpedo and mine damage is going to be a problem. He can use the small ports of the Lower islands - but these are in danger of air strikes - and the distance from them to Kwajalein is so great many will be lost if they try to go home before fully repairing floation damage.
4 IJN river gunboats engaged the badly damaged Wake at Shanghai. For unknown reasons it had failed to move as ordered - but it can barely move even when it tries. 17 shell hits caused fires and heavy damage.
I-2 off Los Angelus attacked AVD Ballard - and missed. Ballard, in turn, attacked I-2 - and didn't miss.
I-170 torpedoed AR Argonne near Hilo. She may be running out of torpedoes.
I-23 missed PG Sonoma near Hawaii. It was not worth a torpedo and she should not have been engaged.
BB Yamato, Mutsu and Nagato led a bombardment TF of Kota Bahru. 531 Allied casualties, 6 guns lost, 21 vehicles lost. 58 airbase hits (a mistake - it will slow his use of the field), 32 port hits (also a mistake, it will make the port less efficient for him). Good - we will withdraw the engineers and not repair any of this damage.
CA Chokai and Maya, and 15 gun CL Kumano and Suzuya led a bombardment TF of Rabaul. 73 Allied casualties, 3 guns lost. 11 airfield and 26 port hits.
Four Funimoto class BB led a bombardment TF of Lahaina. 441 Allied casualties, 6 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost. 44 airbase hits, 27 port hits. Also a bad move - he needs those facilities fully functional - and indeed expanded - ASAP. It does put the island in danger of falling tomorrow, however.
USN sub Tambor attacked AK Aratama Maru at Wake - but torpedoes failed to detonate (drat!). 6 escorts counterattacked - but failed to hit.
I-170 wasn't out of torpedoes yet - she fired on AK Pelias at Hilo - and missed. Now maybe she has shot her wad?
I-173 torpedoed AO Ramapo at Lihaina.
MSW unit W19 and W20 cleared mines at Lahaina. 407 Japanese casualties in landings there.
RE: RHS Test 13C vs Shark: Tester comment on the first day
7 Dec Post Air Turn Events
Japanese troops landed at Tarawa - suffering 124 casualties in spite of lack of defenses.
TF 16 landed troops at Wake. The Marines fired 505 CD shots in defense.
These scored 31 hits on 11 of the 12 targets fired upon. 3 APs set on fire. 247 troop cargo casualties, 1 gun lost, 5 vehicles lost.
19 Allied casualties and 1 gun lost to counterbattery fire.
TF 20 landed troops at Hilo. Army CD batteries fired 33 CD shots. These scored 3 hits on BC Amagi and AK Tatsukami Maru.
Two DD fired on were missed entirely. 511 troop casualties, 1 gun lost. 68 Allied casualties and 1 gun lost to counterbattery fire.
Other landings occurred at undefended Kavieng (48 casualties), Naga (357 casualties), Legaspi (181 casualties), Guam (68 casualties), Hollendia (28 casualties), Great Natuna Island (66 casualties), Miri (32 casualties), Sandakan (73 casualties), Gasmata (99 casualties), Samo on New Ireland (110 casualties) and Kona (204 casualties). Casualties in part reflect the size of the landing force.
TF 85 landed troops at Kota Bahru. British CD batteries fired 33 shots in defense for a single hit on CL Kuma.
712 casualties, 1 gun lost.
TF 98 landed troops at Rabaul. Aussie forces - with the only CD battery in the region - fired 37 shots - scoring 6 hits on 3 ships - missing two more. DE Namikaze and APD Patrol Boat No 32 were both seet on fire. APD Patrol Boat No 39 was hit but not seriously damaged.
TF 119 landed troops at Davao. It has no CD batteries - but a weak Philippine Army Division fired 21 shots in defense anyway - doing no harm. 268 casualties.
Allied ground bombardments at Davao, Kota Bahru and Rabaul were all inefffective.
Japanese shock attack captured Wake. 1551 troops took on 1826 Marines and illegal civilian militiamen (contractors not properly in uniform). 66 : 1 odds, Fort Level 1. 5 F4F-3s destroyed (what happened to the other 7???? one wonders) on the ground. 51 Japanese casualties, 3 guns lost. 1872 Allied casualties, 45 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. One rationalizes that 1872 - 1826 = 46 of the civilians were not in the militia.
36923 Japanese attacked 14111 Allies at Hong Kong. 1:1 odds, Fort Level 5. 150 Japanese casualties, 7 guns lost. 67 Allied casualties, 5 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost.
Undefended Great Natuna Island fell to shock attack. This island represents a number of islets used IRL by Japan staging for operations against Borneo.

RE: RHS Test 13C vs Shark: Shark's plan unfolds
10 December 1941 (Hawaii) 11 December (Far East)
The night turn began with continuing landings at Kota Bahru by TF 85: 8 CD shots fired, no hits. 10 Japanese casualties.
10 more in pre dawn landings.
TF 87 continuted landings at Naga - 29 Japanese casualties. TF 88 did the same - but encounterd 22 CD shots (by regular army troops, not CD units). 14 more casualties.
TF 12 ran into sub laid mines at Bako, the Pescadores. No hits.
I-4 attacked and missed AP Mariposa near San Francisco.
DM Preble detected, attacked and missed I-24 near Hawaii.
I-8 torpedoed empty AK Empire Attendent near the entrance to the Gulf of Aden shipping channel. She might make port - but we have reversed course for a nearer port - and will run over I-8 again - which might suck more of the torpedoes from the sub. She only gets about three good shots - so that would help protect other ships. Another damaged ship has also reversed course out of the shipping channel - with the same dual object - make port sooner in India - or de fang I-8.
RN 3rd MTB division hit a mine at Takao Formosa - possibly an Allied sub laid mine (I have laid mines literally everywhere on Formosa - and almost everywhere else he might go).
Four old USN DD detected, engaged and missed Ro-45 in the Java Sea near the bottom of the Makassar Strait.
Many IJN ASW units detected, engaged and hit once Dutch sub KXIII at Kota Bahru. Later KXIII attacked and hit an AK - but torpedoes failed to detonate. The many AS units scored two more hits.
3 USN SC and PC detected, engaged and missed I-4 near San Francisco.
Just before dawn they repeated this exactly.
5 USN DD ran in on the transports landing at Hilo. "Protected" by BC Amagi - they engaged and sand DD Natsugumo and Yamagumo, and DE Wakatake. AK Kaiyo Maru was hit 5 times and set on fire. One other AK took 1 minor hit. DD Cumings took 4 hits and was set on fire - the other 4 DD (Bagley, Blue, Mugford and Jarvis) took no hits at all. Amagi appears to have ignored the action - apparently due to not detecting a target - but she may have been smart - at short range she might have been torpedoed if she gave away her position.
An IJN MSW unit detected, attacked and missed Dutch sub O-16 at Great Natuna Island.
BB Oklahoma and Pennsylvania bombarded Lahaina. 28 CD shots by a 5.5 inch CD unit replied - scorting 10 hits - none serious. 244 Japanese casualties, 9 guns lost.
The destroyers retired to seaward - the battleships back to Pearl - but apparently the lack of surface action the day before caused a lack of focus on surface ship attack - and those at Pearl had fighter cover. That is, both offensive moves by surface forces out of PH succeeded - 3 days into the war. Pretty good luck.
TF 7 ran into mines at Lahaina - but no hits this time - the first time in 3 days.
TF 102 ran into mines at Molokai - not sure why it was there? - no hits either. We have systematically laid mines - in particular at Molokai, Hilo, Kona and Lanai.
USN SS Plunger attacked 3 transports at Molokai - but torpedoes failed to detonate. 4 DD/DE counterattacked her but missed.
Ro-45 attacked and missed Dutch DD Evertsen in the Java Sea.
3 Indian Navy ASW units detected, attacked and missed I-8 near the Aden shipping channel entrance.
Ro-40 attacked 4 MSW units at Batavia - missing all of them.

RE: RHS Test 13C vs Shark: Shark's plan unfolds
10 December 1941 Morning Air Turn
111 Bettys and Nells, escorted by 152 Zeros, in company with 7 Ki-46 recon planes, pounded (wholly unused) Clark AFB.
Fine by me - we don't need its large airfield - and we are not repairing it up. 16 Allied casualties, 1 vehicle lost, 47 other hits.
13 Bettys caused 6 airfield related hits on Johnston. He appears to regard it as a theat - but it is almost wholly evacuated - just enough (disabled) squads to make it seem something is there. We took a submarine load of these off today - after the sub planted mines. The base force has moved to Palmyra.
42 Japanese bombers of 3 types caused 40 casualties to the ROC 91st Field Army. 1 Ki-36 lost, 1 damaged.
9 Ki-48s caused 13 casualties and 1 gun lost to the ROC 94th Field Army.
3 more caused 1 casualty and 1 gun lost to the ROC 39th Field Army.
7 Japanese bombers of 2 types caused 20 casualties to the ROC 70th Field Army.
16 JNAF bombers of 2 types caused 13 casualties to the Guam Insular Force.
20 B-17s of 2 types attacked 4 transports at Lahaina, 1 hit on AK Fukko Maru, set on fire. 9 Me-109T and 7 Ki-44 on CAP. 2 Me-109 damaged.
4 B-17s - escorted by 15 Allied fighters of 3 types - attacked and missed BC Amagi at Hilo. 1 Me-109 destroyed. 1 F4F-3 destroyed, 1 B-17 damaged.
3 A-20s out of Baguio City attacked and missed CLAA Kashima at Legaspi. 1 lost, 1 damaged.

RE: RHS Test 13C vs Shark: Shark's plan unfolds
10 Dec 1941 Afternoon Air Turn
39 Kates (probably Army Ki-50s) out of Okinawa - escorted by 5 Claudes - attacked Wenchow China. 3 ROC Hawk 75 on CAP. 40 airbase rleated hits. 1 Hawk destroyed. This deployment was a mistake - but it reinforced his impression the city is a threat base I am sure.
6 more Kates straggled in immediately afterward - met 3 Hawk on CAP again - but onbody got hurt on either side.
29 Nells and 12 Ki-21s raided Tavoy Burma. 30 airbase related hits.
12 Ki-48s escorted by 19 Zeros caused 2 runway hits at Linguyan.
Kiddo Butai sent 18 Vals, 15 Kates and 5 Zeros to raid Johnston Island. 20 casualties, 1 vehicle lost. 20 airbase related hits, 3 port related hits.
9 B-17s of 2 types ran in on 2 AKs at Lahaina. 9 Japanese fighters of 2 types on CAP. No losses on either side.
3 B-17s attacked and missed DE Kuri at Molokai. 13 Allied fighters of 3 types on escort, 3 Me-109s on CAP. 1 Me-109 damaged, 3 Allied fighters lost.
Ni Butai (Two Force) still near Hawaii sent 17 Kates and 35 Me-109s into Lahaina after AK Mercury - still unloading troops from Hilo. 1 P-40 on CAP. 3 torpedo hits scored - from which Mercury eventually sank.

5100 Japanese attacked 1600 Allies at Rabaul. 18 Japanese casualties, 2 guns lost; 51 Allied casualties, 2 guns lost.
Japanese ground bombardment at Nanchang China caused 10 Chinese casualties.
5800 Japanese conducted a foolish shock attack in the Rice Paddies near Shanghai - this unit already out of supplies and demoralized from an attack yesterday. 7100 Chinese in a weak field army got lucky: 348 Jaapnese casualties, 11 guns lost; only 17 Chinese casualties.
5900 Japanese attacked a Chinese guerilla regiment of 800. 35:1 odds, the guerillas retreated. 59 Japanese casualties and 2 guns lost. 88 Chinese casualties, also 2 guns lost. We are having lots of fun tearing up Japanese LOC in East China with several such units.
49 000 Japanese attacked 23 000 Chinese at Canton - three Field Armies having invested the city - shutting down supply production. 2543 Japanese casualties, 73 guns lost. 25 Chinese casualties. Now that is an exchange rate we can learn to love - and the point of the Chinese offensive in China.
40 000 Japanese attacked 14 000 Allies at Hong Kong. No progress toward reducing fortifications. No odds. 707 Japanese casualties, 26 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost. 162 Allied casualties, 4 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost.
Japanese ground bombardment at Kaifeng was ineffective.
14 000 Japanese attacked 13 000 Allies at Tatung North China. 1:1 odds. 418 Japanese casualties, 11 guns lost. 452 Chinese casualties, 31 guns lost.
26 000 Japanese captured Naga from 5300 Allies. The armor and artillery reinforcements didn't make it - are still 15 miles away. They will get there before he can march out of the hex - so we will let them do that - buying time. 255 Japanesse casualties, 9 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. 229 Allied casualties, 8 guns lost. Pretty good exchange rate for 7:1 odds.
6200 Japanese attacked another guerilla regiment of 700. 14:1 odds. 20 Japanese casualties, 2 guns lost. 5 Chinese casualties, 1 gun lost. The guerilla unit retreated.

RE: RHS Test 13C vs Shark: Shark's plan unfolds
10 December 1941 Comments
This campaign is going very well. This stage is mainly an exercise in damage control by the Allies - with moments of counterattacks. We have managed to assemble Asiatic Fleet, Dutch Fleet and Force Z at Balikpapan - and it is now out hunting. We have picked off a long range minelayer near Canton Island - and continue to proceed West looking for targets of opportunity. We have managed to set up some air strikes from China, Malaya, British North Borneo and Pearl Harbor for tomorrow (these don't always work of course) - and are shifting PBYs and B-17s from the USA to Australia along the long SLOC by hopping bases. It isn't visible yet - but we have started a drive Westward along the Aleutians toward Hokkaido. Hawaii is unexpectedly strong - and once again we flew in fresh air units - and more air transports - which continue to reinforce Lahaina - and tomorrow add Lanai to the list. We are not yet certain of the fate of Hawaii - and we never intended to bleed to death for it - but it appears likely we will ultimately retain it - givin indicators at this early stage. We are not diverting carrier forces to its immediate relief. Almost all the ships departing Hawaii yesterday made good their escape - joining the first wave from 2 and 3 days ago: most damaged and some support units will survive to join the counteroffensive. More amazingly - most of the merchants and auxiliaries from the Philippines appear about to safely exit the Celebes Sea - there is little opposition except some air strikes - and until today - one submarine - it may be out of ammunition or damaged.
This game - which has an allied team - does not have the Allies in panic. We have a divided military command - more or less divided by a NW/SW line - with Mifune in the NE chair - and we have three political advisors.

RE: RHS Test 13C vs Shark: Shark's plan unfolds
11 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) 12 Dec (Far East)
The Night Phase began with Ro-50 missing ML Pro Patria in the Java Sea just North of Soerabaja.
USN sub Dolphin had torpedoes fail to detonate vs 3 AKs near Hilo. 4 ASW escorts missed in their turn.
5 Blenheim Night Fighters out of Georgetown missed CL Kuma at Kota Bahru.
2 USN PC units and 5 DD engaged I-2 at the entrance to San Francisco Bay - hitting her twice.
2 USN PT units ran in on Hilo - missed with torpedoes but hit a AK Azumasan Maru with 1 .50 cal - setting it on fire. An ML and another AK were missed entirely.
TF 133 landed troops at Loaog Luzon. 82 Japanese casualties.
Pre dawn landings involved 6 more casualties.
Mystery: TF 1271 - which does not exist - "landed troops at Harbin" - and no troops showed up.
AK Hukuei Maru detected Dutch sub O-20 - but was unable to engage her - in the South China Sea.
DE Hokaze detected the minefield at Lahaina.
USN sub Gudgeon torpedoed AP Kinjosan Maru at Lahaina.
USN sub S-40 missed AK Hoeisan Maru at Loaog.
Ro-42 missed AVD Williamson in Cook Inlet Alaska. This seems an extraordinary location for a medium range submarine - one wonders how she got there - or how she can return on her fuel load?
The AM Air Phase began with 34 Ki-47 (Army Kates) attacking Wenchow China: 3 airfield related hits.
9 ROCAF SB-2s and 2 B-10s escorted by 9 fighters of two types failed to do damage at Nanchang. 1 bomber of each type lost, 1 SB-2 damaged.
113 Bettys and Nells, 23 Ki-48s and 15 Ki-21s ran in on Manila out of Formosa. 194 Zeros escorted. 9 P-40E on CAP. 1 Zero, 3 Bettys and 1 Ki-31 shot down. 5 P-40s destroyed in the air and 2 PBYs destroyed on the ground. 9 Allied casualties, 1 gun lost, 1 vehicle lost. 35 airfield related hits. The small damage explained by his running in at 15 000 feet - too high to be effective with small Japanese bombloads.
11 Bettys caused 7 airbase related hits at Johnston Island. There is nothing worth attacking at Johnston Island - just a few disabled remnants of the base force that used to be there - but basing recon there on the second day convinced him the base might be effective.
16 Ki-48s caused 53 casualties and 3 guns lost to the ROC 94th Field Army.
4 Jakes out of Saipan failed to harm the Guam Insular Force.
3 B-17s missed AK Azumasan Maru at Kona.
4 B-18s, escoted by 21 fighters of 3 types, put a bomb into AP Asaka Maru at Hilo.
3 Bettys missed AP Montoro at Victoria Point. For some reason two ships there never went anywhere - so I gave them new orders for Trincomalee.
9 Ki-21s - escorted by 18 Zeros - out of Indochina missed AK ROC Hong Kong Junk Group in the central South China Sea.
18 Ki-27s missed DM Tracian at Manila. This ship has managed to get to Manila from Hong Kong unscathed. She will attempt to lay mines at Brunei.
The CVE force sent 23 Kates to Cagayan. AK Elcano took 3 torpedo hits and she sank from the flooding they caused not long afterward. Four Allied ships from SE Asia to Hawaii sank by flooding out.

RE: RHS Test 13C vs Shark: Shark's plan unfolds
11 Dec PM Air Phase
The phase began with 37 Ki-47 (Kates) from Okinawa attacking Wenchow China: 22 airfield related hits.
5 Navy Kates then attacked the same target - from Bako - and caused 1 port hit. Probably they were after the
Wenchow Transport Group - which has left port.
Ni Butai (CVL Force) sent 6 Kates into Pearl Harbor with 16 Me-109s in escort. 1 runway hit. 16 Allied fighters on CAP.
4 Kates destroyed. 1 P-40 destroyed and 1 F4F-3 damaged. The Me-109s were not effective. In part - this was due to altitude settings - Allied bombers were set up to have an advantage over both fighters and bombers at normal altitudes.
Next Ni Butai sent 9 Kates and 2 Me-109s to Molokai. 4 airfield related hits. 1 Kate damaged by AAA.
3 B-17s with 23 fighters of 3 types then attacked Ni-Butai itself at sea: 44 Me-109s and 6 Petes on CAP. 1 Me and 4 Petes shot down. 14 Allied fighters and 1 B-17 shot down. The other 2 bombers bugged out.
3 more B-17s with 9 B-18s missed AP Izumo Maru at Lahaina. 1 B-18 lost, 2 damaged. 12 land based Me-109s and 9 Ki-44s on CAP. 3 Me-109s damaged in air combat.
9 Ki-48s put 2 small bombs into the Yangtze Barge Group near Wanchang Central China.
Post Air Phase events:
USN DD Pillsbur and Peary missed Ro-45 near the Southern tip of Borneo.
Landings at Aparri involved 31 Japanese casualties.
16 000 Japanese attacked 22 000 Allies at Kota Bahru. No odds. 464 Japanese casualties, 26 guns lost, 6 vehicles lost.
59 Allied casualties, 4 guns lost.
Japanese ground bombardment at Nanchang caused 13 Chinese casualties.
1400 Japanese attacked 2 000 Allies at Guam. No odds. 15 Japanese casualties, 30 Allied casualties, 3 vehicles lost.
5200 out of supply Japanese attacked 7000 equally unsupplied Chinese near Shanghai - not on the road system. No odds. 116 Japanese casualties, 6 guns lost. 24 Chinese casualties, 1 gun lost.
Undefended Sandakan Borneo captured by the Japanese.
83 000 Japanese attacked a Chinese Guerilla Regiment of 1400 at Tsinan. 11:1 odds. 55 Japanese casualties, 3 guns lost. 78 Chinese casualties, 7 guns lost. The Chinese retreated. We were able to move so three RR hexes in the area are occupied by Guerillas - and Kaifeng is isolated.
Japanese ground bombardment at Kaifeng was ineffective. It revealed no less than 52 000 Japanese in the isolated hex, facing 35 000 Chinese.
14 000 Japanese attacked 12 000 Chinese at Tatung. No odds. 184 Japanese casualties, 9 guns lost. 116 Chinese casualties, 9 guns lost.
28 000 Japanese attacked 3200 Allies at Singora, Thailand. 12:1 odds 114 Japanese casualties, 8 guns lost. 134 Chinese casualties, 8 guns lost. The Indian Army brigade retreated to Alor Star - as intended.
Undefended Hollendia captured by the Japanese.
Allied ground bombardment at Davao and Rabaul was ineffective.

Hawaii is so strong we are still flying in air transports - being used to ferry defensive troops to Molokai and Lanai - also supplies to Molokai. A limited air offensive continues - with Marine SBDs transferring back to Hawaii - and B-17s flying in from the USA. Tired B-17s fly out to rebuild morale and numbers - at San Francisco. Normally it should not be safe to sent planes to Hawaii at this stage - but his air power is inadequate and we are going to continue to build up air striking power in Hawaii.
Expect surface action tonight in the strait between Celebes and Borneo.
All the damaged ships and auxiliaries which have left Hawaii are now well away - and will reach the US West Coast or Christamas Island.
Kiddo Butai remains West of Johnston Island - not threatening anything.

RE: RHS Test 13C vs Shark: The return of the KB
12 December 1941 (Hawaii) 13 December (Far East)
The night turn began with TF132 landing at Aparri - no casualties (means no troops = supply landings).

10 ASW ships (1 AVD & 9 DD) attacked and missed I-2 one hex off San Francisco Bay.
Later a newly arrived AS TF hit the sub 3 times - in spite of having only 5 ships (3 DD, 2 PC).
Ro-33 torpedoed and sank AK Governor Taft which was departing Manila Bay after emergency repairs at Cavete Navy yard.
8 ASW ships (3 SC, 3 PC, 2 MSW) engaged and missed I-4 one hex off the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
6 DD, CL Kiso and BB Yamamoto engaged and missed Dutch sub O-20 at Saigon.
10 PBY-5s made a night attack at Aparri - missing two ships.
A modified Force N - led by RAdm De Ruyter - engaged a Japanese 4 ship formation off Sandakan. CA Exeter, RNN CL De Ruyter and Kijkduin, RN CL Danae, Dragon and Durban, 3 USN & RN DD, 5 RNN DM. - engaged - yet other Allied ships sat out the action as observers - I guess. 68 hits on all four ships, 2 AV and 2 AP. AV Sanuki Maru sunk outright. AV Sanyo Maru and AP Kisogawa Maru on fire, heavy damage. AP Kiyozumi Maru on fire.
Two Dutch SC units engaged and hit twice Ro-45 near the SE tip of Borneo.
I-11 engaged AK Valentijn two hexes East of Iron Range in the Gulf of Carpenteria - missing with torpedoes but scoring 9 gun hits (many with 25mm) - causing fires and heavy damage.
Japanese occupied Miri engaged Allied counterlanding Sarawak Force at Miri - but fired no CD shots. 64 Allied casualties in the landing.
Later the Japanese managed to get off 4 CD shots - all missed. 47 more Allied casualties in continuing landings.
Still later in the night the Allies lost 78 more landing at the same point.
TF108 continued landings at Aparri - 119 Japanese casualties.
USS Argonaut stumbled into KB SW of Hawaii - and 8 DD attacked her - scoring 3 hits.
A single MSW unit swept mines at Saigon.
I-124 caught tiny tanker Mei Hsia two hexes South of Hong Kong. Her wait for a "safe" time to transit failed - she took 5 shell hits - then a torpedo - and sank.
3 IJN DD detected and cleared mines at Cam Rahn Bay.
Dutch sub O-20 torpedoed and shelled and sank AP Miyako Maru at Saigon.
Her sister O-19 torpedoed and shelled and sank AP Neikai Maru one hex off Saigon.
