Will we get a real zoom this time?

Post by gunny »

Is there anything new graphically here such as mouse scroll wheel zooming in and out? And as you zoom in, terrain and sprites take on a really detailed bit per pixel appearance.

Is detailing on the terrain and sprites going to be improved?

CCTLD has a zoom out feature that allows you to view the entire map at one time.

Close Combat: Cross of Iron has a three zoom level feature.  IIRC it's about 200%, 100% and 50% roughly but the sprites are not scalable.  They remain at the same resolution regardless of what zoom level you're in.

That's not exactly correct, Oddball. The zoom in view of CC3 and CoI use the SoldierB sprites, which are larger. It is not used in CC4, CC5, WaR or TLD. In fact, there is no reason for that file to be in the Graphics files.

@gunny: No is the answer to all of your questions. WaR and TLD have no zoom in feature.

So is CC5 simply top-down at a fixed distance and perspective, or can I use the mouse and get down to ground level and perhaps change the viewing angle?

Fixed distance, top down only.

Standard view is however much real estate your screen resolution supports - varies from 1/10 to 1/4 or so of most maps depending on your settings. The higher the resolution, the more map and the smaller the team avatars. There is a "zoom out" to an overview map, which shows the entire battle map and depicts the units with generic, non-military icons with name lables.

These are the only two view available. There is a 200% zoom in in CC2, CC3 and it's re-release CoI, but that was dropped in CC4 and all games after, including the CC4 and CC5 re-releases (WaR and TLD) as well as the mil sim derivatives of CCM.
