Infantry Guns

Post by Phil »

Just began the Lost Victories MC, and I noticed there are a few Infantry Guns attached with the core force.
My question is how do I effectively use these guns? From what I've read I get the impression they just fired at targets over open sites and not as an indirect fire weapon.
Am I correct?
Anyway, I really like this Mega Campaign so Far.
Great Job!

The 75mm variety are great for supressing troops; the 150mm's actually cause alot of casualties, even in adjacent hexes. In a game I have going on right now I've had a couple destroy armored vehicles, though with their low fire control you shouldn't count on this.

Do you just drag them along in the attack? Postion them in the rear? In the first battle, I didn't find them of particular use. Of course, none of my heavy weapons were of any use in the river crossing.

The 75mm will do some damage to soft unit, but as already stated they are great at surpression and smoke if you need to get out of Dodge. 150mm can really put a real hurt on the large gatherings as stated with splash damage, and can be a big morale killer even against heavy armor, especially after a couple of turns of poundings.

Infantry Guns are just for what their name means. Use them to blast enemy infantry back to the stone age.

Ive found them to be very helpful for supressing bunkers as well.
Be careful doing this with the 150mm of your own troops are near the bunker your men will take casulaties.
I learned this the hard way blasting a Russian bunker and 7 Germans got their names in the local German papers.

Playing LV I noticed the 75 mm can take out medium tanks also, and when the experience rate grows, it scores quite many hits also, then adding surpression to the crews. But in general, I find them quite useless and I tend to leave them to guard victory hexes.

After I played some of WBW's scenarios in the past, I never leave victory hexes unguarded anymore;)

I tend to use the 75's as infantry suppression and light tank busting. They are also effective at getting immobilised tanks' crews to bail out. I've scored a good few immobilising hits against all sizes of AFV, and on one memorable occasion, toasted a KV-1 m.40 with a vulnerable location hit.

And I thought I had done my 75 proud by immobilizing a KV-1 with a long shot in Recon on Radecheiw(sp?).

I mostly use them to plink away at targets of opportunity from behind my lines on a hill with good visibility. If they draw some fire I consider it to have done its job. They are hard to destroy being crew served and an HE shot fired at them is an AP shot not fired at my Panzers.

If I remember correctly the 75mm carries 4 rounds of HEAT and has a better fire control than the 37mm. Then can't be beat if you need direct support, and no tanks, to take out that pesky MG that's holding up your advance. The Stum's were the mechicanized version of the 75mm infantry gun.

The problem with IGs is that they have to be set up before they can be used so they are often vulnerable to enemy fire before they can fire back. Realistically they can be used in long range fires, beyond effective enemy rifle fire say 8+ hexes, but at that range they can still be suppressed by LMG fire and have trouble hitting anything. They can still suppress enemy units at that range. In a defense/withdrawal they can be used better, position them much the same way as MGs.

Thanks for all the tips. The last battle I fought (clearing Oleszyce) I tried to use them. Honestly I didn't find them (the guns) much help.
Am I right in assuming that these can't be used as indirect fire weapons?

Yes Phil, you are right. They can not be used in that way.

My personal experiance with Inf guns is that they are wonderful weapons in the right setting! Many of these have been posted above already. Don't discount them all togeather however. I still feel that the one good advantage of the smaller Inf guns was the portabilty of them. The 75mm peices were fairly easy for the crew to move around and as already stated great for use on enemy Inf.. And the 150mm type are great rear-area bushwackers by the way! ;)
