There is no comparison between "The Longest Day" and "PH". The former is incomparably better in its portrayal of history. The latter has almost no resemblance at all to anything that ever occurred in this solar system. For one thing the "battles" in "The Longest Day" were filmed at the locations of the actual battles (some adjustments were made to the "march of progress" in the 20 years intervening between the real thing and the recreation of the event though: example: the burning house in the "paratroopers (101st Div) land in St Mere Eglise sequence was actually in the current location of the Paratrooper Museum). I had not realized that the movie was filmed in the actual locations until I went to Normandy a few years ago...made the visits "spookier" since I had some "film clips" playing through my head as I walked through the battle areas.

The movie Pearl Harbor is a love story with an arcade flight game backdrop. It's another one of those movies <cough> Titanic <cough> that I will never see.

Actually, Titanic is a love story set against a much more accurate historical recreation. Not perfect, but compared to the hokeyness of PH...

I thought we were never going to mention that movie by name. Longest Day was ok as a movie but not for history.

My thoughts too. That "other movie" was fun to watch, sort of, but the Longest Day was a much better movie overall. One thing that still impresses me about the Longest Day is the star-studded cast in that movie...a virtual who's who of stars from that era. About the only scene I found weak in the Longest Day was the scenes of Omaha Beach....Saving Private Ryan put it to shame. Then again, Saving Private Ryan was an "R" rated movie...the Longest Day was a "G" rated movie. Might have been difficult back then (probably even today) to get a "G" rating with shattered bodies, bloody limbs and gore lying around everywhere.

The Longest Day was Sean Connery's last film before stepping into the role of James Bond. [;)]

BTW was this the only war film that John Wayne did where he was portrayed fighting in the European Theater? I seem to recall all his other war films were in the Pacific or Asia.

John Wayne's worst war movie: In Harm's Way. The only redeeming part was the use of real B-25 and its navy designation as a PBJ.
So much WitP and so little time to play.... :-(

I always thought the film where he was in Vietnam, The Green Berets, was his worse war movie. In Harm's Way was alright...but there's certainly been better.

Well, the flaming POS called "Australia" ( the movie) is some times grouped with 'war' movies. So it surely rates right up there in the golden pooh of terrible war movies awards.

I'd give my vote to The Conqueror. John Wayne as Genghis Khan? Perhaps history's worst piece of casting unless you count Denise Richards as a Bond Girl that's supposed to be a rocket scientist or Ben Affleck in anything.

Yeah it's really tough to compare movies of different eras. Not only was one "G" vs "R", but the Longest Day was stilled released in the shadows of the war and I really don't think people wanted that realism.

The Longest Day is a classic. PH is what to watch if ABSOLUTELY nothing else is on to watch. You may want to try Tora Tora Tora ....

Longest Day - really good movie, amazing cast.
PH - Piece of ****. Watch Tora Tora Tora instead, you'll spend less time screaming at the screen.
(Though PH does have Kate Beckinsale in it... [;)])

The longest day is a (quite adapted, allright, allright) testimony movie (thanks to the book). History has a pretty short sight if you are looking at it with an individual point of view.

Anything based on a Cornelius Ryan book is based on researched history, so I don't know why some of the posters are saying it is not "history"..
Dad took me to see The Longest Day because he was in the original cast, while serving with HHC,116th RCT of the 29th...Dad felt the Omaha Beach sequences made it look very mild, compared to the real event, but I have no doubt SPR would have been more on the mark.

You know how major league pitcher Kurt Schilling was an Advanced Squad Leader player? Well, it's a good thing Ben Affleck isn't a WitP/AE player who follows these forums; poor guy would develop a complex (with good reason - what a schmuck!).
