I'm in!

From the legendary team at 2 by 3 Games comes a new grand strategy masterpiece: Gary Grigsby’s War Between the States. Taking gamers back to the American Civil War, this innovative grand strategy game allows players to experience the trials and tribulations of the role of commander-in-chief for either side. Historically accurate, detailed and finely balanced for realistic gameplay, War Between the States is also easy to play and does not take months to finish.

I'm in!

Post by SlickWilhelm »

I just purchased WBTS last night and it's on my hard drive, ready to play.

Any suggested method for learning how to play? I spent a goodly number of hours in FoF learning how to play by reading the AAR's and reading the manual. Am I facing the same steep learning curve here?

GGWBTS´S learning curve is not that steep (compared to FoF).
Iam in my second campaign vs the AI yet. Playing the south on hard with the CSC option. Great fun.

The ingame and especially video tutorials are a great help. I learned the basics while playing my first campaign (without CSC) and alt-tabbed to the forums and used the search function if something was not clear to me. After the box arrived I took a long bath =) and studied the manual hehe.

Its a wonderfull game and provide a more realistic feel than FoF (which I love too especially since its deeper).

Yeah the video tutorials are the best start.

I am in April 1862 playing my first game, as the CSA and with the computer controlling my production.  I played my first three or four turns almost oblivious to what I needed to really do, after doing the video tutorials and reading scanning the rule book.  I found myself playing a turn and then thumbing through the rulebook and watching tutorials.  I think I've now watched all the tutorials three times and a couple four times.  Little things like sending cav to scout and then forgetting you had to go back to the area and make them scout and getting them mixed up in a battle against a much larger force.  And dozens of other things I did wrong.  And reread parts of the rule book I needed to.  I am getting my clock cleaned.  Union forces landing all over the place along my coast.  I can also see they are building up for major offensives.  But I am finally figuring out how to play it and it is great fun.

So I suggest my method, lol.  Dive in, start playing, and learn as you go.

JW, if you ever take flying lessons, I hope you don't choose the same method of learning! [:D]

Thanks for the replies, gents. I didn't even realize that there were "video" tutorials. [&o]

I am interested in hearing your take on FoF vs. GG WBTS. Sounds like you were enjoying FoF quite a bit. Did the sale push you to buy this?

I'm still having a hard time getting into this one.. to me seems harder to learn than FOF.. I loved FOF and AGOED.. FOF may be more fun.. AGOED has a Civil War 'feel' to it.... seem more real.. but again FOF is just a blast.. I love the tactical battles.. too bad they weren't in MP as well...

I just got HPS Antietam and that one is a real GEM!.. Ugly as heck.. but such a blast to play!

I hear ya on ugly. The main reason I am holding off on FoF is because I am tired of these fixed resolution games on my 1920x1200 LCD monitor looking like crap.

I totally agree with you on the fixed resolution thing, but you're missing out on one of the best games I've played in years. And there's no guarantee that there's ever going to be a FoF2.

same here. the sale price dropped and I jumed in. I liked FoF very much and the detailed battels were a blast. The face that you can arm a single brigade with Rilfe A or B thrilled me and could make a difference !

but there are a few points aboutn FoF where I said *humpf* *cough* *cough* esp the map - a 14 day turn, OK, but the map scale compared to 14 day turns...grumpf.....I mean in GGWBTW the map provinces are much nicer and better scaled down, and the fact that union ships and troops invaded the south in 62 on the river mouth is much more better covered here !

however, being a AE long campaign player and a BTR long campaing player as well leaves not much time for this title....

well, no reason to buy any new games for the next 3 years then [:'(]

Some one needs to wake up Tiller from listening to the cash register "ka-ching" to upgrade his games to a 21st century graphic's display. [8|]

Not to mention a universal combat engine that treats platoon combat like division combat, bleh, that's another sticky point.
