Supply Or Strategy Question

Post by demyansk »

Quick question, Been playing the game now and getting a bit of a handle on the system. I was wondering about this, you make a breakthrough through a defensive line with your armor and you want to surround your opponent. You instead take the armor a few hexes past your opponent and conduct a pincer movement on the flanks and close off your opponent. However, opponent has empty hexes behind its line to move into. What effect does this have on your opponent? Secondly- Is it better to make the pincer and then close from behind in the same movement and end your turn behind your opponent adjacent to them?

Supply Effect?

I have done both but its been against the computer, a lot of times i have the PO completely surrounded except one hex and the PO then will retreat into that hex when attacked?

Supply is recalculated only at the start of the turn (some changes to this in the new version but the principle is the same). So if you cut a unit off it will still be in supply for the rest of that turn. By the same token, if a unit breaks out of encirclement it will remain out of supply for the rest of that turn.

In your example if there is an empty hex behind the enemy unit, note that your ZOCs block supply through empty hexes. If the other player has a unit in the hex then supply is traced as normal.

Generally it's best to just push stuff forward to cause as much disruption to your opponent's defence as possible, without allowing him to insert his own units between your spearhead and your main line, thus making you the one who is cut off.

To add to what golden delicious has said, if you break wholes in his line, try and make sure the gaps are bigger then one hex, otherwise you run a high risk of being cut off in the advance through. Also, depending on how bing the front is, I would usually surround only the flanked units first, giving me the multiple frontage advantage in the attack, and then 'roll up' his front line from there, which forces him to either sit and defend (being slowly battered into a pocket) or better still forcing him to withdraw, causing the general disintergration of his front line which is better in my opinion, as I hate having large numbers of units held up because they are surrounding a handful of units trying to evapurate them, which is not always as simple as it looks. The second situation also creates a (potentially) huge gap for me to rush into with my reserve units, if there are any available!!

Alot of this also depends on which hexes you focus your attack, as picking the right spot can cause this collapse alot easier then other points in his line - this is where I find paying attention to road networks and bridges pays off.

This is all against a human oponent though, the PO dosn't seem to know how to defend unfortunatley.
