Which WiTP?
Hey all
Was thinking about buying the game, seems very interesting though, being a Euro, I dont know much about the war in the Pacific. I was wondering whether to buy the original War in the Pacific or the Admiral's Edition? Is there are difference?

From what I hear AE is 10x's more in detail than WITP.....

RE: Which WiTP?
IMO if your going to spend the money, buy AE, it is so much more than vanilla WitP. A lot more precise is the word I would use, you can do things better without the hassle as in vanilla. More information feed back also so you get more details on air and sea combat.
RE: Which WiTP?
How much are you into detail and micromanagement? Both games are a huge undertaking and very detailed, with AE being more so. For realism I'd have to say that AE works harder to make you work harder to accomplish things and WITP (vanilla) allows for much faster happenings and deadlier (unrealistic) air combats.
The PTO was a vast and complex war in itself and islands were all important as they could be home to an airbase. The ETO was nothing IMHO concerning naval warfare and the PTO was all about it except for Burma (though flanking amphib is possible) and China is a manpower pit.
If I were buying as a newbie today I'd go for AE. Take the plunge.

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

RE: Which WiTP?
How do the two games compare in terms of numbers of scenarios? The "Admiral's Edition" information blurb mentions 5 scenarios in addition to the full campaign, while the "War in the Pacific" information blurb mentions only the full campaign. Have the patches added any more scenarios? Are there some good player made scenarios?
This is not a make or break issue for me, but I can't help thinking about the 19 or so scenarios that come with Uncommon Valor and hoping for something similar. It's quite unlikely that I'll ever complete the full campaign, so having a variety of smaller, more manageable scenarios would be nice.

Smaller scenarios are being created all the time for AE and are starting to surface in increasing #s. Check out the mod section in the AE forum.

RE: Which WiTP?
As for stock scenarios, AE is a dissapointment as all the scenarios are just different flavors of the Grand Campaign that starts in 1941.
You also get a very small Coral Sea scenario, an Aleutean scenario, and a decent Guadalcanal scenario. I've seens some smaller user made scenarios but the only thing that entices me is the Marianas and maybe Operation Downfall.
WITP has better variety. You get several flavors of GC that start at crucial times instead of just Pearl Harbor.
For me, I have come to the conclusion that AE is not for me when I want to play a Grand Campaign. Details are too much to bother. And the more detail that AE shows, the more grognards complain about these little details. It's better that they don't know about this in the first place. Hehe.
So for me, I will still play WITP Grand Campaign. Will only use WITP:AE for smaller scenarios. I have also recently started playing UV.

RE: Which WiTP?
Thank you for the replies. At this point I think I have a pretty good idea what's available for Admirals' Edition.
For regular War in the Pacific my understanding is that, in addition to the full campaign, there are some smaller campaigns with starting points later in the war, some Guadalcanal scenarios, and also some user created scenarios. Are there any other scenarios that come included with the game or its' patches?
Thank you again for any information you can provide.

RE: Which WiTP?
I´m also thinking about to buy WitP. From what I´ve heard and read the A.E. is definitive too complex and too time consuming for me.
For the deadlier (unrealistic) air combats if read something about an Nik-Mod for balancing the combat results. Could someone tell something about it?

RE: Which WiTP?
Mods in WITP addressed many issues and in CHS air combat was toned down, the map was changed and more bases were added, the OOB was changed as were starting locations and entry points and different plane types were added. Also the ship types were changed to reflect a more realistic representation of the types involved and their capabilities (especially merchantmen). These differences are just some that immediately come to mind.
Mods didn't address bugs as WITP AE did. AE built on the mods and at the same time allowed the players more control of various things. Options such as way points and patrol zones for TFs were added, Japanese production changed and ship repairs were also changed, just to name a
few of the things.
Like all things, something new is more difficult and as you do it familiarity makes it easier. I was scared of moving to WITP from UV and it sat on my HD until I finally took the plunge and was happy that I did. Now the same situation exists with AE as I play WITP and just fool around with AE at present.

Ok, after a afternoon of thinking which one to buy I orderd A.E.. When I have to learn a game from scratch it does not matter which one of these two...[:D]

Good decision. As in my case, it's only when I had experience playing WITP vs. WITP AE when I realized that plain old WITP is for me.

One of the major advantages of AE is the much superior AI. The AI in WITP does a fine job of serving as a "sparring partner" as you learn the mechanics. However, it cannot provide much of a contest after that. Andy Mac wrote some AI scripts for AE that have earned rave reviews.

The A.I. was the main argument for buying A.E. Most times I´ll against the A.I, so I bought A.E.
