The Reluctant Admiral - Allied Perspective

Post by ny59giants »

I will be going back to playing the Allies in this mod of John III that is based on the Circle 4 Mod. Currently, I have a game as Japan vs FatR (Stanislav) using two day turn cycles that is in early July 42. To say it has been a learning experience would be an understatement. Read his AAR to see what problems I have had. My second game is with John in a 2x2 PBEM as Japan using JuanG's "Enhanced CV" Mod that has just reached January 42.

This game will totally fill up my dance card. [:D] I have known John since early in his classic game vs Canoerebel (Dan) when I became his Economic Minister (thank you Damian and Floyd for developing Tracker [&o] [&o]). He was close to crashing his economy in that game when I came aboard. First, we just exchanged PMs, but John is still "computer challenged" and we had to talk on the phone. A friendship has developed through this. We both know each other better than most opponents and this will add a little more spice to the game. Since we have a current game as partners in the 2x2 PBEM, I will be unwilling to say too much here and give our opponents there too much insight into John's strength and weaknesses that I believe he has.

House Rules:

1. 1st turn can have multiple port attacks, but ONLY from carriers. Manila and Singapore may have Fighters up and on CAP. Cannot transfer new Squadrons reflecting prior knowledge.

2. PPs to move out of national borders (Japan - Manchuria, Thai) and (Allies - India, China)

3. No strategic bombing (Oil, Resources, HI, LI, etc.) until July 1943

4. Manila subs can form TF based on a date/time stamp (use the last digit in a pre-determined e-mail). Since this may be the second port attack, the last digit in the time (hh:mm:ss) is used to determine how many subs can form TF

5. Non-historic 1st turn, normal reinforcements, PDUs ON, orders for TF formed already

7. Offensive operations in jungle and mountain hexes on the Burmese front should be stopped from early-July to early-November, allowing R&R and unit rotations, and give both players on the front a much less bloody (and much more interesting) experience. This would mean:

- No deliberate or shock attack in the jungle hexs in the designated area
- Bombardment attacks are still allowed
- Movement into friendly or empty hexes are still allowed
- No offensive air ops from or against the Burmese front hex (recon still allowed)
- No offensive carrier operations in the Gulf of Bengal against Burma (other naval ops, including bombardment, are still allowed). Striking either Bengal, Northern India or Malaya from carriers in the Gulf is still allowed, of course.

Hexes would be corresponding to everything above the "Thailand" label within Burmese and Thailandese borders + the few jungle hexes going 3 or 4 hexes into "India" (Kohima, Ledo, Imphal area)

8. Night Bombing must have 50% Moonlight through the end of 1943. Starting January 1, 1944 Night Bombing may occur in any condition.

9. Aircraft Limitations:
-No A6M3 on CVEs
-No A6M4 on any form of Carrier

c. Combat altitude could be fighters only from:
Dec 1941- May 1942 20,000
June 1942-Dec 1942 25,000
1943 28,000
1944 31,000
1945 Whatever

All other Aircraft below 20k (except Recon and 4EB)

10. Four-Engine Bombers:
a. 4e bombers restricted to 10k or higher for naval attacks (does not include PBY/Mavis type patrol craft)

b. 4e bombers CANNOT bomb troops

Any suggestions to add/delete/change in these HRs??

A6M4 was not made carrier capable the last time I saw the files. As about homerules, I recommend one against using A7M and B7M from CVEs and CVLs.

Dec 7th - the first acts of war

Post by ny59giants »

The first attacks did not do as much damage as John had hoped for. After the experience as Japan in my 2x2 game with John, I chose to stand down almost all of the Allied Air Force.

John does his usual splitting of KB and sends CV Akagi and CV Kaga to 3 hexes due west of Manila. The question will be if he stays for an extra day or heads west to support landings at Mersing or other areas around Malaya, Borneo, or Sumatra.

John has Mini-KB (CVLs Ryujo, Zuiho, and Shoho) operating 2 hexes due east of Manila. I expect them to move into the archipelago, but remain close enough to hit Manila again. John loves to sink ships, so I have formed 1 or 2 ship TF and left them for one turn at Manila while the 4 minesweepers move to Bataan to remove any sub laid mines there.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Morning Air attacks at Alor Star, Hong Kong, Kota Bharu

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Afternoon Air attack on PT Boats at Hong Kong (no hits)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Landings at Kota Bharu, Aparri

Notes/Plans:
Air losses were light for both sides (Allies 46 and Japan 14).

Our house rule allows the Allies to sortie some subs from Manila based on the last digit of the date/time stamp of the turn 1 PM coming to me x2. I was lucky and it was a 9. Thus, 18 subs were allowed to form pre-turn 1. Most will be headed to Babeldoab, Ambon, and Manado triangle to flood this area.

China - the 12 divisions that are not permanently restricted head for Burma/India. Once filled out, they will provide between 2000 and 2500 assault value. It may not be until late 42, but I have more supplies in India than China.

Burma - About 60 to 75k worth of supply are loading in India and Colombo to "try" to get into Rangoon. Once there, I will use the supply buttons at various bases to move it into China. I hope they all don't get sunk.

Malaya - Steps are being taken to make a "Mersing Gambit" as costly as possible, except for the use of Force Z.

Philippines - Troops are prepping for and some are moving towards Clark. The supply requirements for Bataan was increased to get it out of Manila. Big Bad Boise was disbanded at Cebu on turn 1. I hope she goes unnoticed for about a week and then patrols the Japan/Babeldoab convoys. Hopefully, by then the carriers will be too far south.

Carriers - Lexington will move one day closer to Wake to allow the fighters to transfer over. The extra DBs were transferred over to Enterprise to allow room. Both will then met near Midway. Saratoga is headed for Pearl

Pearl - All lightly damaged non-BBs were placed in the shipyard along with West Virginia (she will need just 155 days to fully repair). The other 7 BBs will take some time before they can move to the West Coast.

John's plans will be to take most of the South Pacific and then land on Australia. He hates land combat and will do things that avoid this and emphasis naval combat.

Stay Tuned!!

You definitely know your opponent ... a huge advantage, except he also knows you as well.   It is going to be a lot of fun reading both sides in this.  Be interesting to see who uses their knowledge of the other player to the fullest advantage.

PaxMondo, that's not even an issue. Ny59 will use his knowledge of his opponent infinitely better. John has flash but little depth and is unlikely to involve a proper appreciation of opponent or logistics in his planning. He might say he does and he might even think he will but compared to what Ny59 will do in terms of opponent appreciation and logistics John will find himself in quite distant second place.

Already he has thrown away the possibility of strategically decisive results with his initial attack which was poorly weighted. That's the first sign of the pattern we will see throughout the game.

Well, that's that settled then.

Good luck! Hopefully, you won't forget about our game entirely [:-]. We've just entered the best phase.

I'm too is about to start my second game. Only thing that's left before testing (and sending the turn, unless some hole in orders reveals itself) is final set of orders to KB. I must say, the splitting of KB into two warpdrive TFs with extra escorts on hand is a huge blessing. You're lucky that John decided to go after Manila. A perfectly coordinated strike against PH usually is an impossible dream with a non-historical first turn, but having two TFs instead of one allows it.

As a side note, I don't really understand the obsession with Manila. Effects that surviving subs can have in the long run are in no way comparable with effects that surface units of the Pacific Fleet can have even in the opening months. That's assuming you can really nuke Manila, which, as this example shows, is not so easy. I dare to say that I used subs to substantial effect in our game but I don't believe that Manila subs are responsible for anything more important than damaging Zuiho (twice?) and maybe slowing your operations a bit. They just aren't that important in 1942 and I doubt they will be that important - as compared to the flood of new subs - later. In fact, by this point my sub pickets around Home Islands do not include a single sub that started the war in Manila. IIRC, I have just 2-4 patrolling across the Pacific (those that were closer to Pacific bases when Soerabaja became too dangerous). Others are in Indian Ocean now and haven't scored a hit for quite a bit of time now (although sitting in bases and finally upgrading probably contributed to that).

Dec 8th - Where will he go??

Post by ny59giants »

Dec 8th: Looking for signs of where his main thrust will be.

Japan Carriers:
3 CVLs are now 2 hexes SE Legaspi - hit shipping at Manila
CV Akagi/Kaga are now 4 hexes WSW of Manila - hit shipping at Manila
2 CVEs show up 3 hexes South of Davao - 2 xAKL and AVD are sunk by Vals

Luzon:
The day starts with my 4 minesweepers clearing the mines at Bataan.
4 of 6 unescorted Nells are shot down as they attempt to hit my minesweepers. [:)]
The A2A over Manila heats up. The total losses for the day is 20 P-40s against 12 Zero, 11 Nell, and 5 Betty. Standing up against 2 CV, 3CVL, and Takao is going to be hard.
Clark is hit again and remains closed.

China:
Off of Hong Kong, he has a TF of TK/AO that runs into my escaping transports. Not one wants to fight.

Malaya:
I-162 & I-164 both try to get too close to Singapore and hit mines. Of course, both are sunk. John moans that he hates the AI. I tell him he needs to learn to use waypoints.
Sally visit the AF at Alor Star.
The infantry at Kota Bharu is hit by Lily/Sally.
I-165 sinks a CMc near Singapore.

Burma:
Mergui and Victoria Point are targeted by Army bombers. Why?!? [&:]
Yokosuka 1st SNLF (para) are used to capture Victoria Point
Yokosuka 3rd SNLF (para) are used to capture Mergui

Java:
An escaping xAK hits a mine on the southern tip of the island. Must be another of his wrinkles added to this mod.
I-122 hits a small Dutch xAP trying to get over to Borneo to move troops back to Java.

Invasions:
Guam

Plans/Notes:
I don't understand the use of his para to capture two minor bases on the west coast of Burma. A plane symbol shows up at Victoria Point, but no BF were flown in.

LBA at Singapore continue to rest and get Morale up in case a landing at Mersing is planned by John. Troops head for Mersing, but none have arrived yet.

I had tried to keep ships at Manila until mines were cleared and to have my fighters get in at least one good day, which they did. Those that are still afloat are ordered to make a run for it.

Ships Sunk: 5 xAKL, 1 xAK, 4 xAP, 2 AO, 2 DD, 1 AS, 1 AVD

Kota Bharu captured.

Burma:
My little BF is attacked again as she tried to reach Tavoy.

Java:
Mine clearing at southern tip (Banjoewangi)
A TK is sunk at Merak. Minesweepers are ordered out from Batavia to sweep next turn.

As yubari just demonstrated me (ouch[:(]), Allies have quite a lot of torpedo-carrying Catalinas that can be concentrated on Luzon. While this might be too late for your game, mere demonstration that you're willing to use them for naval strikes can keep your opponent from close blockade of Manila Bay.

Also, I believe that everything in Manila capable of floating should be evacuated immediately, mines or not. In our game I lost some of the most valuable ships this way (because the fast evacuation TF got to your minefield first[:@]), but saved far more than I lost.

Scratch 2 Japanese.....

Post by ny59giants »

Dec 10: The death of two Japanese ships is welcome news at Allied HQ.[:)]

Landings: Vigan

ASW/Subs:
SS KXI is sunk at Singora by 3 DDs. She was forced to the surface after 3 depth charge hits and finished off by gunfire. I still enjoy this feature in AE regardless of which side I play. [&o]

Java: Minesweeping operations are underway at both ends of the island - Banjoewangi and Merak.

Philippines:
Manila - 37 Nell/Betty hit SS Permit at night.
Clark - 32(3) Zero escort in 33 Nell and 73 Betty at 8,000. My CAP of 2(1) P-35A and 11(1) P-40B/E Warhawks. The AF is kept close by Airbase hits 28, Airbase supply hits 1, Runway hits 255.

Malaya:
Alor Star - 44 Sally, 9 Mary, and 19 Lily harass the 6th Indian Brigade as they try to board the train to head for Singapore.

Georgetown - 21 Lily attempt to close the AF - Airbase hits 2, Airbase supply hits 5, Runway hits 18.

Burma:
Tavoy - 19 Ann visit the AF and get very light damage. Japanese forces CAPTURE Tavoy using Yokosuka 3rd SNLF /1 (part of another para unit).

China:
Hong Kong - 29 Ida and 45 Sonia hit the AF - Airbase hits 3, Runway hits 31. 17 Ann go after the 2 xAKL in the port.

Death of 2 Japanese ships - John had sent a SC TF to Mersing to hunt for ships and was in turn, the hunted.
The morning attack has 16 Buffalo, escort in 9 Hudson and 4 Wirraway to attack BB Mutsu and don't get a hit.
The second wave is made up of 10 Blenheim I, 12 Blenheim IV escorted in by 9 Buffalo. They find BB Mutsu, BB Nagato, CA Atago. Again, their NavB skills are not good enough to hit their target.
The slower TBs arrive as the 3rd wave - 7(1) Swordfish and 14(1) Vildebeest. Their deadly torpedoes find their mark as BB Nagato, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage; BB Mutsu, Torpedo hits 2; and DD Arashio
The fourth and final wave of the morning sees 10 Vildebeest get 4 hits - BB Nagato, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage; and BB Mutsu, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
The afternoon finds the skies still clear and the level bombers able to reload and get back first. 17 Buffalo escort in 10 Hudson who dent the armor of BB Nagato, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage with 250 lb SAP Bombs.
The second wave is now clear to come in as 8 Buffalo escort in 10 Blenheim I, 12 Blenheim IV, 3
Wirraway as BB Mutsu, Bomb hits 3, is targeted.
The dreaded TBs have had their planes reloaded with new torpedoes. 3(2) Swordfish and 9 Vildebeest find CA Takao, Torpedo hits 1 and BB Mutsu, Torpedo hits 3, and is sunk
John reported after the turn that both BBs were sunk and the CA heavily damaged. He asked for a re-do as he had set he SC TF at Full Speed to hit Mersing at night and be back under LRCAP Zero by morning, but it had remained there. He stated that he was looking to sink a minelayer or two. I told him I haven't had this problem and he should have only sent in the CA with about 4 DDs to do what he wanted and not the BBs from the covering force at Kota Bharu. Should I have allowed a re-do??

Intel: 33rd Division is prepping for Merak.

I don't think a redo is needed, his TF commander just disobeyed orders. I have heard there are some problems with full speed settings when sending your ship to enemy bases, mission speed might have been the better choice.

Manila - 49(3) Zero escort in 28(3) Nell to hit the ships and find 2(1) P-35A and 33(3) P-40B/E Warhawks on CAP. Allied Ships
xAK Hanyang, Torpedo hits 1, heavy fires, heavy damage

The magnetic power of pays off as 51(4) unescorted Betty find 7(1) P-40B/E Warhawk on CAP. But the AF is hit.

Vigan - is captured by Kanno Detachment

The 3 British BFs on the north coast of Borneo are being picked up by 2 1/2 squadrons of PBYs based at Balikpapan. If any observation can be made from other AARs is the Allies are usually short of Aviation Support later in the game. I'm focused on using PBYs to transports as many BFs to Australia for eventual rebuilding.

The Chinese DC-2 are now at Palembang transporting in infantry and BF from nearby Dutch bases. I hope to get some damaged Oil/Refinery Centers out of this effort.

Instead, he is going after the major Oil Centers as priority #1. I didn't fully realize it until reading comments on his "Reluctant Admiral Feedback" thread. There he spoke of some future plans (Balikpapan and Palembang). He had spoken of cutting the initial reserve of Oil and Fuel in Japan to start with. My sub commanders have received new orders.

I just saw the number of PBY-5s the Dutch get (duh!). Most of their patrol squadrons have been upgraded. Some will be used to transfer troops around. With 2 CV and 3 CVL in the SRA, using transports is too slow and very hazardous.
