building bridges

Post by henri51 »

How do you get additional engineers to help build a bridge? Do you just send them next to the bridge builder? There is no bridge building command for normal engineers, but the manual says they can help to build the bridge.

Also in the first tutorial, just for the heck of it, I sent the bridge engineer to build a bridge on the big river halfway between the 2 main bridges (yes I know there is probably not enough time to finish it) supported by the main force while the 2 smaller forces probed the 2 main bridge defenders to keep them out of the way, but it never started to build the bridge. The manual says that you can see the progress in building the bridge by clicking on the icon, but it never showed a progress bar. What am I doing wrong?

Henri

OK, I think I found the answer myself. the manual seems to imply that one can only build bridges at indicated crossing points.

You have to 'rope' together or select 2 or more engineer units and give the group the bridge building command; only one of the engineers has to have a bridge (icon) available.

IN BFTB this is going to be very important for the noob German player to know while he waits behind the Our River on December 16th.

Yup........ learned this one the hard way myself in early COTA plays. For the sake of all noobies (and some of the more experienced as well) I sure hope BFTB's manual emphasizes this requirement.

I updated most of the BFTB manual from COTA and I made sure that it was emphasised. Most importantly, the AI will also group the engineers now to speed up the process.

I told the German engineer battalion in Thermopylae to build a bridge, but they kept repositioning over the crossing point without building anything. Ordering just the bridge coy and one engineer coy worked. There might be a problem with using too many units, or maybe a battalion HQ or something.
