A few Q's.

Post by andym »

I am considering buying The Longest Day.But before i take the plunge i have a few questions.I am not a novice in the Wargaming world,however having said that,i'm not that keen on real time games.I have played Highway to the Reich and such like and got on ok with them.However im not keen on the unit size they use.So my 1st question is How small a Unit can you play with(i know you can make scenarios etc)I just dont want to have to start being in charge of hundreds of Troops straight Off.Also,can you pause the game while you ponder your next move?Or do you have to take it in the chin?MAny thanks.

Game can be paused while you think.

there are also 3 speed levels

Fast = realtime (normal)
medium = slower
Slow= very slow

You can play with as few as 1 unit per side (a unit can be a single soldier) if you choose.

How small a Unit can you play with

The smallest unit would be one solitary sniper. You can edit your opponent down to a solitary sniper too.
can you pause the game while you ponder your next move?

If you hit F3 the game pauses, but you cannot issue orders or even look around while the game is paused. F3 is for when the doorbell goes, tea is ready or your bladder just won't take any more.

Remember there are no "moves" in the sense that these games are not turn based. It's not uncommon to be stumped as to what to do next. It's not uncommon for the totally unexpected to happen. Isn't that what happens in real life? Why is Close Combat used by the military to train people?

There is no doubt that to begin with you'll have a dry mouth, a racing heart and your bladder just won't take any more. Isn't that the point though (unless you have a dodgy ticker)?

You *can* alter the speed of the game during play. You press F8 and the game pauses while you alter the game speed in "options" and then resumes at the new speed after you hit "OK". So, in your early games you'd presumably want to kick off on "slow" and then increase the speed as you feel more confident.

... or just leave it on "slow" if you enjoy playing it that way. The AI doesn't mind.
Or do you have to take it in the chin?

Sometimes you just get slaughtered but it's great for taking your mind off real life worries!

I love CoI. It's a great game. I haven't gotten to the 'nam mod yet, but Der Ost Front 2 is pretty cool. I've got two AAR's going in the COI forum here now.
